I assume it's because crime fandoms, unless there's some hint of a white m/m relationship, tend to be smaller than, say, most fantasy/sci-fi fandoms. I'm a part of small, not-really-slashy crime fandoms and trust me, it's frustrating.

But this sounds like something I may get into. I stupidly didn't give this show a chance because of the TV Guide cover fallout, but I'd be willing to give this show a shot after I catch up with the two other shows I haven't actually bothered to catch up with yet.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"A white m/m relationship"? Why hello, SJW. You mean it doesn't have an "m/m" relationship in general. Skin colour has absolutely nothing to do with it.

not anon you replied to, but hahaha. oh man. this comment gave me a good laugh. enjoy your alternate universe.

WHAT UP

[personal profile] tyger66 2012-10-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to break up your anti-SJW party, but it's pretty common for non-white men to be completely ignored when it comes to slash pairings. Naturally there are exceptions (and k-pop/j-pop fandoms), but MY GOD, look at the fandoms with extremely prominent black men in leads roles that get passed over for white dudes that are so much less interesting.

I'm pretty anti-SJW, personally, but even I can't pretend that slashdom isn't extremely biased towards WHITE m/m relationships.

Perfect and current example of this is Teen Wolf (although Scott is latino and not black). Fandom creams themselves over 2 white dudes who have little to no interaction and hate each other, ignoring the POC lead. And the canon POC gay character.

Two other examples from fandoms that I love are Turk from Scrubs and, especially egregious, Gus from Psych.

Both show have slash pairings basically spoon fed to the viewer, both those pairings are white guy/black guy, and both pairings are completely ignored in favor of shipping the white main character with a guy who (by all appearances) can't stand him.

I prefer ships where the guys start off hating each other, and I won't deny that, being white, I tend to find white people more attractive to me personally, so I am also guilty of contributing to the problem. However. in the cases where I have shipped pairings involving non-white men, there has been exactly NO FIC EVER.

In regards to the Scott thing, I doubt it has less to do with his race and more to do with the fact that in the first season who was not a very good character. He was only focused on, Allisonallisonallison. And well, first impressions are crucial. So your choices in the first episode of main characters were: Lovesick moron, hilarious sidekick, or hot broody guy.

Also, until someone told me that Scott (and whoever his actor is Tyler something) was hispanic, I would not have known for sure. Maybe I just hang around a lot of tan guys.

Re: WHAT UP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of Sterek, personally, but I don't think the lack of Scott/Stiles slash is entirely because Scott is a POC. I think it has more to do with the fact that the way that Scott was written in season one didn't really resonate with a lot of people, and he wasn't very popular with fandom as a result. I love Scott as a character, but the writers focused a lot on establishing the basis for his relationship with Allison in season one, and as a result some of the things I think they were trying to get across about his character (the fact that he never really gives up, cares deeply about everyone - not just Allison, etc) got a bit lost in the shuffle. He had this horrible, life changing thing happen to him and was thrown into circumstances beyond his control, but there were times when it seemed that story took a backseat to "SCOTT + ALLISON = TRU LUV." Yes, people do tend to get fixated on one another, especially at the start of a relationship, but I think a lot of people just found it incredibly irritating that people were dying and there was horrible shit going on, and yet a large chunk of the narrative wanted to focus on walks through the woods and random make-out scenes. Scott and Allison are great together, but for large parts of season one the writers were trying to sell it so hard that a lot of times Scott came across as caring about Allison above and beyond anything else. I don't think Scott's as completely and terribly awful in the first season as a lot of fandom likes to portray him as being, but there were honestly parts where I found the constant "AllisonAllisonAllison" pretty damn annoying.

As for Danny, I have yet to come across anyone in fandom who doesn't like him, and Danny/Jackson has a pretty decent following, as far as non-Sterek ships go. Danny is, unfortunately, a tertiary character a best, though, so it's a bit more understandable that he isn't included in as much of the fic as the main cast. But considering the amount of screen time he gets relative to the amount of fanworks including him, I think he gets a decent amount of love.

Now, if you want to talk about the fact that so many people seem to forget about Danny when they're clamoring for an on-screen queer romance and holding up Sterek as the best choice for this, then yeah, there are some definite issues there. But that has to do more with the general tendency of overly enthusiastic shippers to erase canon queer characters in favor of promoting their ship as the One True Way to increase queer representation and equality for all.

I thought it was a common observation about the most vocal SJWs that they go nuts over all the stupid crap but only themselves write and read about white characters.

i really wish someone had come up with a different term than SJW to describe flop people like that. seeing the term 'social justice' used as an insult burns my fucking buns.

How many fandoms have extremely prominent black men in lead roles, exactly? And ones that aren't nixed from the pairing line up by age/relationship to other characters?

Re: WHAT UP

House MD, Psych, Scrubs (an old one, I know, but the fandom was crazy active), Avengers, Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Torchwood: Miracle Day, Blade, RENT, Mass Effect 2 (do video games count?), Dexter (Doakes in seasons one and two, and yes I know--not extremely prominent, and yes they killed him off, but I wanted fic for him SO BAD, and it never happened, so I'm a little bitter.)

There are also untold numbers of fandoms I am NOT familiar with, so feel free to add to this admittedly short list.

I'm the anon that posted the first comment here, and IA. I wasn't even trying to be a SJW. The big slash pairings in fandoms tend to be white m/m pairings, unfortunately. I wish it was different, but alas.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Numb3rs - David and Colby are partners all through seasons, having a big emotional break-up and then reunion (Janus List etc) go on a frigging DATE together but all fandom can do is write Colby/Charlie slash.

Colour is not irrelevant.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was thinking about Numb3rs myself. I get that Charlie was the fandom woobie and that maybe people wanted someone to slash him with besides his brother, but..... David/Colby was just so obvious.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
They even showed up on a freakin' DATE.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the show once, but if people haven't found a white m/m relationship while watching it they haven't been trying hard enough. That guy who played Jesus and that guy who used to be on Lost definitely have the vibes.

Incidentally it is a pretty good show and that wouldn't be why I watched it, but I am surprised it doesn't get more fans based on that alone.

I'm thinking their age has something to do with it. If they were a bit younger they'd have lots of teenaged shippers.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I totally just dated myself didn't I? But yeah that makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Emerson is pretty old for fangirling. But RDJ is, what, 46? Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner...they're all about the same age as Jim Caviezel (he's 44). And Agent Coulson is also getting up there. :) So I don't know.
deadtree: (Default)

[personal profile] deadtree 2012-10-24 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but they also have a very youth-oriented franchise that they're attached to, which makes a difference too.

But I could have sworn that Emerson (aka: precious Ben Linus from Lost) had lots of fangirls.

OP

The fandom, tiny as it is, appears to mainly slash the two male leads (Finch and Reese) because the show is very slashy that way, but also has a good following of het with Det. Carter and Reese (the badass ex-assassin.) Carter and Reese also have a fascinating cat and cat relationship on screen. (Nobody is a mouse on this show.)

I do love that we have a variety of pairings that get explored, but we need more writers!

I don't know what TV Guide fallout you're referring to. Will google.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Except POI has a white m/m relationship where they talk about how they "only have one friend" and other characters remark how one of them just isn't the same with the other gone.

It's not like shippers would have to try very hard.

Thisssssss

plus that the show really is ot4/all-combinations friendly imo so there's that.
