Yeah, this is pretty much the same for me as well. I'll only check something out long after the initial hype has died/quieted down considerably (like, I'm only now starting to watch bits of 'Avatar: TLA', and although it's still kind of ongoing, I'm watching parts of 'Transformers Prime' now, too), for the most part, I just shut out/ignore/Tumblr Savior the things I don't care much for. I can't even begin to explain why, tho'. Guess that's just me being stubborn/obstinate. XP

I'd honestly recommend not bothering with Transformers Prime. It's kind of gone progressively downhill.

i'm like this, though i tend to also start to resent things that i don't watch but just see all over the place, doctor who, star wars, etc etc. i try to keep a handle on stuff i suggest to others to check out, because i can go overboard if i want somebody to talk about stuff with. though i do seem to know what some people like, most of the time people love the stuff i recommend them.

Idk. I think I've come to a place in my life where I judge whether or not I'm going to follow a rec by the person rec'ing it - whether or not we have similar tastes.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. Totally. But I just can't keep silent when I read/watch something great... I don't even recommend the thing, I just keep talking about it all the time.
It used to get really ridiculous sometimes. I have this BFF who's a clever person, but not much into reading; they don't even know some famous stuff at all. And after every great book I read I would come to them and tell them everything about this book, my thoughts and feelings on it, cultural background, author's life et c. And they would listen. They must've had really great patience. Still don't now how they tolerated me back then... I did it even after "The Gulag Archipelago".
And now I fell in love with a series and do the recommendations thing, even though I know that nobody gives a fuck (it is a very, very obscure work). Hypocrite much?

Oh, I'm always worried that I'll be the annoying hype person who turns people away from things I like. I have such a hard time describing what I enjoy in a useful way, I'm usually reduced to keyboard smashing and flailing. I don't rec a lot because of it. >_>

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one.
The sentence that pops up every time I'm trying to get someone to watch a show: "Wait, it sounds terrible but it's actually great!"
I've learned not to take it badly when people try to recommend a show to me and I actually tried to convince them to watch it 7 months before.

[personal profile] rosehiptea 2012-11-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm prone to it too. I've almost missed out on some good stuff (and presumably have missed out on some other good stuff) because I was sick of hearing about it and thought it couldn't be as good as the hype.

(And yet I can also be annoying hype person, especially about music. But I try to just put it up in my journal where people can easily skip it, as opposed to trapping individuals in annoying conversations.)

I'm like this too OP. For me it's more that I've had so many people try to shove Dr. Who down my throat that whenever it starts seeming like someone's about to go down that road with something I just automatically start going into 'Nope' mode.

Yup. I resisted Doctor Who for years before falling down the unending rabbit hole, and in the end I was only sucked in through fairly low-key, no-pressure weekend watchalong nights.

And the more people scream bloody murder when I admit I haven't watched Buffy or Firefly and try to forcibly sit me down with it, the more I kind of secretly hate Joss Whedon. (Okay not really, because Avengers was pretty excellent, but for Avengers I had the benefit of not having heard all the best bits of dialogue repeated fifty times in front of me.)

One of the reasons that I only ever provide recs when someone asks explicitly is because I'm like that too. The other reason is that I have very particular taste and absolutely loathe a lot of nearly ubiquitous tropes (gratuitous romance and babies ever after being two) to the point where they'll completely ruin a piece of media for me. I end up hating the vast majority of hyped up media even when I do give it a try.

same op, same. happens to me with nearly every live-action series out there.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends for me how insistent someone is being with something. If there's a lot of people just generally going 'this is awesome, no really check it out' then I'll give it a go myself, but if someone is trying to shove the thing down my throat going 'OMG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE IT?' then my interest is not going to be there. For me it's a let me discover it in my own time kind of thing.

Sometimes. Usually only when it's something I've seen something for initially, and then people are like omg try this it's so good you have to see it. The more they do, the less likely I am to watch it.

This basically means I will never ever watch Supernatural, in other words.

Homestuck, Ponies. /thread.

I'm really bad at this. Then I go back and watch or read something once nobody cares about it anymore, and I miss out on the fandom.

Then again, 95% of the time I'm right about the hype and I save myself the time and effort.

Aha, this trope was the primary reason I stayed clear of Phineas and Ferb when it first aired here. I think the only good part of this trope was that I delve further into reading books and can now rec. some of them to you if you love reading.

I think just about everyone suffers from this trope from time to time, whether they remember it or not. Don't worry yourself too much OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Did I post this secret in my sleep or something?

It's how I feel about a lot of things when people rec them. They're all "OMGWTFBBQ BEST THING EVER" and then I watch/read it and go "Hmm, that was pretty good". And even if it was good, even if I enjoyed it, it never really lives up to the expectations.

On the flip side, I also tend to tone down my enthusiasm. While I'm thinking "THIS THING WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE" I go "It's pretty good I guess. If that's your thing. I think you'll like it. Maybe. We share a similar taste so maybe you'll like it?"

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think it happens to a lot of people. Sometimes it even happens for me after I've seen something and thought it was good. Like, the first few people that say was awesome, I'm all 'Yes, yes, it was' and then the next few say it and I nod, and then more people and I'm thinking, 'Uh, okay, it wasn't that good' and then when the next person says something about it, I'm thinking 'Stop talking about it already.'

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like recommendations, but I hate obligations to love.

Basically Homestuck in a nutshell. Even though most of the fans would agree that it's a love it or hate it thing, by the time I forced myself to the sixth act and still find reading it a chore, it was an indication that it's not for me.

You will be amazed how er, strong, some of the reactions are, when I said fuck it, Homestuck isn't for me and I'm not following it anymore.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
This is 100% the reason why I refuse to watch Sherlock, Supernatural, and David Tennant seasons of Doctor Who. The amount of times I've had to Tumblr Savior that shit because I'm tired of seeing everyone's faces is just immense.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP. It gets kind of sad though because I tend to miss out on a lot of my friends fandoms, and even if I want to try and get in on the fun with them, all the hype turns me off because they're in those huge fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
This is me and Dr Who. I was so irritated that I kept ignoring it.

I ended up watching 2 seasons, didn't care for it at all : /
