So you'd prefer she stayed as a Mary Sue who can do everything, but nobody wanted to get with, like she was on the show? Hokay.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
How was she a Mary Sue if no one wanted to hook up with her? I thought one of the important factors of being a Mary Sue is that you have a magnetic vag.

And also, isn't Clark, like, the ULTIMATE Mary Sue? He can do basically everything, everyone wants his dick (he had to wait a while, but it DID happen), and his only weakness is some green rock.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
What he can't do, Chloe does for him. If he's stumped, ask Chloe and she'll figure it out.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I watched the show, but isn't that kind of what makes her unique? She's like this teen genius computer hacker?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
And that's one half of what OP apparently dislikes about her. The other half being: people are attracted to her.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I always really hated that double standard in fandom. Guy can do a bunch of cool stuff, all the girls want him, and can easily vanquish villains? Oh, what a cool dude! Girl is even mildly competent? OMG, MARY SUE! :/

Why does being a genius make one a Mary Sue?

This is part of why I don't think the term means much of anything anymore. Basically, if someone is at all special in any way (or, god forbid, drives the plot)*, then they are now a Mary Sue. And I don't get it, because I don't know about you, but I don't want to watch or read about a bunch of average people who look average and only do average things and are completely lacking in any characteristics that might make them occasionally stand out.

*(And that's another thing: most people aren't going to write about characters who don't have anything to do with the plot progression, because that just doesn't make any damn sense. For example, of course Robert Jordan wrote about Rand and Friends and not a bunch of random people on another continent where nothing much was happening. Why? Because no one wants to read about a bunch of random people who are neither impacted by nor have any influence over the major events of a story. But apparently, there's a Problem now if you write about the movers and the shakers, because it's Too Convenient that they Just Happen to be Where Things Are Going Down and that they Just Happen to be Involved with the Things that are Going Down. OF COURSE THEY'RE INVOLVED. THAT'S WHAT THE FUCKING STORY IS ABOUT. IT'S NOT CONVENIENCE; IT'S THE NARRATIVE. Christ, it's like saying, "isn't it rather convenient that Winston Churchill just happened to be alive and in a position of political power when World War II broke out? Something's not right there, clearly.")

Okay apparently I have a lot of feelings on this and I need to chill.

It is what's special about her. This is all based on the early seasons, I think she might have changed in the later seasons. I just haven't gotten that far yet.

But I thought she failed most of the other Mary Sue requirements. She's not always right. People aren't constantly describing how beautiful she is. She isn't the magic solution to all problem in the story.

Mostly her skills are used as a beefed up version of Google for Clark, beefed up because she can hack- which isn't a massive power in a show where the lead can lift tractors over his head and light fires with his eyes. In all honesty her computer savvy qualities are used as a plot delivery device by the writers. They rarely emphasize how smart she really is to be doing all of that, or what a hero she is when the information does help save the day. At best there's a "Thanks Chloe" or "You're a Life Saver". Except for a few episodes. To be fair though I know she got some crazy powers later on in the series.

The writers actually loved Lana a lot more, they thought she was the real magic of the show. I always thought she fell closer to the Mary Sue side of things.

Everyone on Smallville is a Mary-Sue at one point or another.

Oh, but wait, guys DID want to get with her! She was Jimmy Olsen's wife (later sister in law), Doomsday's calming force and Oliver Queen's one twu wuv! The only guy who didn't want her was Clark. So, yeah, once Lana left the show, Chloe became the most annoying uber Mary Sue ever.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
A few people fall in love with Chloe and suddenly she's a Mary Sue? Wait, what?

Come on. This happened to ALL the leading ladies of Smallville, and Clark had a few people fall in love with him too. I can't even chalk that bullshit up to the characters because clearly bad writing for these characters are to blame.

DIDN'T YOU KNOW?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Any female character who's not boring, average in every way, and romantically unpopular with her preferred gender is a Mary Sue.

No, she's a Mary Sue in later seasons because she has/is the answer for everything, has major canon characters fall hopelessly in love with her, and could do no wrong even when she clearly DID do wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
i hear what you're saying, but otoh

damn, girl

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
If your perception of characters can so easily be changed by fan-produced media, then A) you never had a strong oppinion of the character, or B) your brain is a malleable as play-doh.

Secrets like "fandom RUINED this for me" only tell us how weak minded you are.

Seriously.

I suggest you bone up on media literacy, OP.

I did not watch much of Smallville. Some of the first season, and then here and there on repeats or whenever I'd randomly catch it on. But I've always loved Chloe. When I decided to see what the fandom was all about I was really sad to see so much hate for her. People either seemed to despise her, call her a Mary Sue, or both. I never got involved with the fandom and have still only seen a handful of episodes but I still love the character.

I've always really liked her too. Maybe it's because I haven't watched after Season 3, but I don't understand fandoms vitriol towards her. She's clever, independent, has ambitions and is not afraid to be different.

Sadly, you've just described why they hate her.
oftheark: (Default)

[personal profile] oftheark 2012-11-08 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
No, we hate her because she turned into an egotistical, manipulative (OH WAIT she was always manipulative) shrew who thought she was above it all since she knew some special secrets and therefore decided knew what was best for everyone. And god forbid you disagree with her.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Can you give some examples of this? I followed Smallville on and off over the years and I thought Chloe was one of the more sensible characters in the show. There were a few times when she made questionable decisions, but she was mostly a proactive character who utilized her talents to make some sort of difference when shit goes down. I think it took the edge off the fact that Clark Kent was the most reluctant superhero ever. (That made me facepalm for years.)

And let's not discount the iffy writing on this show. It was pretty much a trainwreck that lasted ten years.

TORRRRSOOOO LIIIIIIINES.

Hotness.

Also, she's apparently incapable of choosing pants that won't fall off her ass if she breathes wrong.
