*sigh* Your "subtle" attempt to troll people by pretending you don't recognize a depiction of the ressurection of Jesus is a) lame and not very wanky and b) is just distracting from a secret topic that is actually good and relatable which I might have almost taken seriously and commiserated with you about. You didn't need to insert the trolling to get comments, you know! A *lot* of people would agree with you about their own dead fandoms.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Dearheart, I really don't think anything about this secret was subtle - what it was was funny. (Does it help if I say that I say that as a devout Christian? What am I saying, it never helps to say "I say that as a devout Christian". I am, though. For the record. I just don't require everyone in the world to recognise a depiction of the resurrection of Christ - with the pennant of St. George, wtf? - particularly not when making an idle aside joke. C'mon, man! Lighten up!)

I know Umberto Eco made a whole big thing - presumably a genuine theological debate at one point? Who even knows - over whether or not Jesus laughed, but I reckon He had a sense of humour. Sadly, it seems He neglected to give the same to all of His creation.

(Also, not everyone's Christian! And that's OK! The OP doesn't have to recognise or acknowledge that they recognised the image. And that's still OK!) The rest of the tone of this secret is flippant and off-hand and fun. I like that in a secret. :D

Wait. Are you wank-baiting? I feel like maybe on some level I'm being trolled.

OP: I feel your pain. My fandom's dead too. And the fuckers just won't come back.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Most people know the story/recognize the image of Jesus even if they don't know (or care) about the finer details. It's highly unlikely that someone who googled "resurrection" and found a picture of Jesus doesn't know who it is or why Google supplied it.

And try being less of an asshole to people right off the bat, huh?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure thing.

I just think the OP was being funny. Sure, perhaps not in the most tasteful way, but I don't think they were trying to be overtly disrespectful or rude - this is a YMMV moment, but since the rest of the secret was flippant and off-hand, why not take the whole thing in the spirit it seems to have been intended? But then, I'm often surprised when people are offended or upset by this sort of thing, and I double-take at it. Since everyone else here recognises the image, and we're clearly OK with attributing its source material, why the issue that the OP wants to make a joke of it?

Still, like I said, this level of sensitivity something I don't come across often. *shrug* If the original commenter finds it unpleasant or off-putting, more power to them! And if I'm being an outright asshole, then I'm sorry. They're saying they find it offensive, I'm saying I find that odd; we're both entitled to our opinions, but you're right, I could have been nicer. I intended to be flippant - I didn't intend to be a total dick. It's probably too late at night for me to make the distinction, so original anon, if I crossed the line and seriously upset you, I'm sorry. (But I do still think the secret was funny.)

You should probably call an exterminator about that massive bug up your butt.

It's called a joke.

Asshole.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Jokes are usually funny. That's what makes them jokes.

And the bug is happy where he is. Quit hating.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Humor is subjective! Not all people find the same things funny! News at 11!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone is a christian, or even religious. I for one had no idea it's Jesus, even though I have a general idea about the guy.

I mean it might have been a troll attempt, but yeah, not everyone knows that every picture of a bearded dude in white robes in the clouds - Jesus being resurrected.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Really, they shouldn't let you out of the house if you are this ignorant.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not knowing details about someone's religion means I should not leave my house?

If you say so.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-11-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
What is up with all these anons talking to themselves on this comm?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Unnecessary assholism?

Even knowing nothing about previous anon:
1. Not everyone lives in a country with highly visible Christian images.
2. This image doesn't have the most recognizable symbols for Jesus.
I assumed it was Jesus because I do live in a predominantly Christian country, but if I were shown the picture and told to name the figure, I wouldn't say with absolute certainty. It could very well be a random saint. Probability in the art world says it isn't, but it could be.

So how about we be a little nicer to others?

OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
To clarify, that was a joke. Much like the Elvis thing. Apologies, I forgot that you guys got mad when people don't have deep and extensive knowledge of your fandom.

My bad.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
No, we get mad when people make jokes that aren't funny. DO IT BETTER.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I'm too busy being baffled by the fact that dead Elvis jokes and sacrificial goats got by, but making a joke about not recognizing an obscure Renaissance painting is somehow trolling.

But I'll give it my best try. Have you heard the one about the two hikers?

They come to a fork in the road and decide to split up, and meet up the next day. The one who goes right has a lovely hike, and when he meets up with his friend on the other side of the valley he says, "Great trees on that side! How that the left?"

His friend replies "It was super fabulous, dude!" (he was from California in the 90's). "I met this girl who was tied to the railroad, and I untied her just before a train came! She was so grateful that she let me bang her all day!"

"OMG, seriously?" replied his friend. He glanced down the trail, hoping to catch a glimpse of the mysterious girl. "Did she swallow?"

"I don't know. I couldn't find her head."

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
The joke wasn't about not recognizing the painting though, was it? I think that's what ticked some anons off.

I didn't get the hiker joke -- can you tell another one?

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I can't find her head, as in the hiker pulled the girl off the tracks but not in time so the train still took off her head and that was why she didn't complain about the sex.

Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly. They lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
And honestly, why the hell is the idea of someone not recognizing Jesus offensive? Or not knowing the details of his details? It's not a famous painting, it's got, like, only two allusions to the resurrection myth in it, and frankly, it's not a fabulous representation.

I was joking, but seriously, WTF is up with this reaction?

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I guess the joke just flopped! Them's the breaks.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly I think people are missing the point. Slightly controversial part of it aside, the OP's point is that it sucks when fandoms die. That's it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-20 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Here's a thought: OP is from a non-Christian country and is ESL?

yeeeeeeeaaaaahhhhh I probably shouldn't want to give the troll the benefit of the doubt....

FYI after reading the rest of the comments, I am Christian and found the sacrifice a chicken the funniest bit. On reflection, could OP be Hindu or Sikh?

FYI2 I didn't recognize the picture either.
