Wait. You don't think fat shaming is wrong?

Tell me more.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Not just because fat shaming is wrong" =/= "Because fat shaming isn't wrong"
fingalsanteater: (Default)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2012-12-20 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
... Okay. Saying "not because fat shaming is wrong" implicitly indicates that either you don't think it's wrong or you just don't give a fuck if others fat-shame, which is a shitty attitude to have.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
But saying "Not just because fat shaming is wrong" implies that you do think it's wrong but that there are also other reasons for your opinion besides that.

(I'm not OP and I'm not sure why I'm defending this so much except that it seemed like a fairly innocuous statement - criticizing Cassandra Clare's weight is shitty both because fat shaming is wrong and because it takes away from other criticisms of her work that have validity)

"not JUST because fat shaming is wrong" = fat shaming is wrong, but it isn't the only reason

What's difficult? It's completely clear to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
No. "Not just because fat shaming is wrong" = fat shaming is wrong and I have other reasons for why this bothers me.

You are completely misreading this.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe when more then half of Americans are overweight or obese, people could do with a little more shame about their personal habits.

Because you are not an island, your personal choices effect others, and you don't have a personal right to stuff your face without critique.

If someone you knew self harmed, your response would be the same then?

'Oh well not my business, their life their choice!'

I would imagine no.

Why is it okay if they're choking their arteries instead?

Hating yourself is a rather effective form of motivation, yes.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much.

Loathing even being slightly soft rather then in shape, is as it turns out, amazingly effective at driving me to eat right and hit the gym regularly.

People are fat for a variety of reasons, and it's not just because they like to stuff their faces. Some people have a genetic predisposition to be bigger. Some people have medical conditions that make them bigger, or that prevent them from getting a regular amount of exercise. Some people don't have a lot of money, and when you don't have a lot of money, generally the food you can afford isn't as healthy. Nobody's an island, and that applies to the causes of fatness as well as the effects.

Shame also does not make people thinner. Sometimes shame causes people to go on a diet, but overall, the results of that are temporary. What makes people healthier in the long term is sustainable lifestyle change- people finding ways to be more active that work for them, finding healthy foods that they like and can afford, and doing it for sustainable reasons. Not "I don't want people to make me feel bad about my weight," but "this is how to take care of myself." Some people are still bigger than average even when they have a healthy lifestyle, but they are still healthy, and still healthier than they would have been.

If shame made people thinner, there wouldn't be any fat people anymore. The people talking about fat-shaming are a tiny, tiny subset of people in general! In fact, fat-shaming is destructive when it comes to public health, because it encourages people to think of their health in terms of weight, not in terms of healthy habits. Not only does that make it seem like dieting is the best thing to do, it enables thin people with shitty health habits to overlook their own problems. No matter how fast your metabolism works, if you are lying around all day eating bacon, that is bad for you.

So yeah, no. You don't have to be a total individualist or an SJW to think that we should maybe stop doing something that really hasn't been working out for us.

Because you are not an island, your personal choices effect others, and you don't have a personal right to stuff your face without critique.

Do you feel this strongly about alcoholics who need liver transplants, or smokers who smoke themselves to death? Or is it just fat people who get you upset?

And how does what a fat person eats affect you? I'm really not sure how that works. Please enlighten me. Because unless that fat person is also holding you down and force-feeding you, it truly does not.

I really want to know how someone being thirty pounds overweight effects absolutely anyone else ever. That's what kills me about the hysteria over the "obesity epidemic", most fat people are not overweight to the point of it significantly affecting their health, their mobility, or even how much space they take up on a bus or train seat compared to skinny people, but somehow we're supposed to be "concerned" about them all equally. Shouldn't you actually verify there's a weight-dependent health problem in someone before deciding his/her love handles desperately require your opinion?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, how does it effect others? Like, people who honestly know the person, or random commenters on the internet? Not trying to start a fight here, just honestly curious what you could mean!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
For me it depends.

If they've got a bit of extra padding, okay.

But if they're seriously obese? Well, I'm not going to say anything to them because I assume they've heard it all before but holyshit am I going to judge them in my head really harshly for a few seconds.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. That is SO not what the OP wrote.
