Well, some people hate bronies because of that, and some people do really hate bronies because they're guys watching a "girls'" show, or because they're awkward and weird (I don't use these as insults,) or any of those reasons. (I'm a female casual fan, here, for context.) Rape is a good reason to hate rapists, it's not a good reason to hate people who like things that the rapists like (unless that thing is actually, you know, rape.)

I'm not defending rapists, I'm just saying that innocent people who share a hobby with someone who's done something atrocious don't deserve to get caught in the crossfire. Direct your anger appropriately.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Except we have bronies defending bronies for simply being bronies. Plus I don't think in even Harry Potter fandom we had people defending real life rapists. Not to my knowledge anyway. Even if HP fandom at its height maybe helped boost fandom wank in general to the stratosphere as the internet was kicking things up a notch.

Brony is also really an optional term, and while it's sad it's been tarnished for those GOOD bronies out there, it's well... optional to associate yourself with this. If you don't want to be associated with these types of people you either order a mass campaign to kick them out or just call yourself a fan. Or maybe both.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I have never claimed that there aren't shitty people who call themselves bronies, just that calling oneself a brony, or just being a fan of the show, doesn't inherently make you shitty.

And I'm all for challenging the acceptance of rape culture, but do I have to bring up the topic any time I use the word "brony?"

I don't even use the term for myself very often. Kind of wish there was a gender-neutral one (as opposed to "brony" and "pegasister.")

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I get that, and that it sucks, but in the end- it's really the shitty bronies fault. Brony automatically for many brings to mind incidents like this or things which while less insiduous are still kind of terrible. It brings to mind hypocrisy and a fandom which makes HP and ATLA fandoms look good sometimes. Bronydom itself has sort of almost become a sub-culture and it either encourages or tries to ignore such behaviour a lot of the time it can seem. I mean yeah fandom is supposed to be an ESCAPE from real life but when a significant or at least loud part of the fandom is helping to perpetuate those very things many try to escape from- what can people do? They're going to be wary of self proclaimed bronies- at best we can only assume they are ignorant of such behaviour in order to protect ourselves and our friends online from harassment. But people are going to be wary when the holders of an entirely optional term treat others terribly and they run into someone else with the same entirely optional term. The only way forward for bronies if they wish to save their name is to accept no excuses- as a whole, they must run out those bad eggs and any who defend them. Love and tolerance only goes so far.

Personally I once wanted to call myself a brony (though I was often told not being a guy I couldn't be) but in the end... yeah. The behaviour was something I didn't want to associate myself with. So I call myself a fan really.

This!

(some people say "brony" is a gender-neutral term but I prefer not to use it for myself since I'm female...but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, my friends who are bronies? don't have anything to do with the fucked up subculture everyone is talking about and they shouldn't be stigmatized just because some people can't bother to separate bad apples from the rest of the barrel. Even if there's a higher proportion of bad apples than usual, the point stands.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
And what, pray tell, makes you think the anger is NOT directed appropriately? People who identify as bronies deserve what they get for the tacit support they provide to their rapist, sexually harrassing brethren. They've all been assholes at some point. You're being one now.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who calls themselves a brony defends rapists? Really? Shut the fuck up, I've been raped myself. And if you say I'm lying to support my point, which I have a feeling you will, you're the lowest of the low.

There's a lot of shit in the brony community. Not denying that at all. There is some anger directed appropriately at the shit. There's also anger directed inappropriately at people just for liking the show and that making them "weird."

Liking the show =/= identifying as a Brony. Considering the way the Brony subculture has behaved, anyone who willingly identifies with them deserves the disapproval they receive.

To pull a Godwin, you can be a vegetarian aspiring artist who likes Wagner and not be, or associate with, Hitler.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-22 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
But according to your logic, calling yourself a "vegetarian aspiring artist who likes Wagner" is tacitly associating yourself with Hitler anyway.

Not at all. Liking something isn't the same as saying "I'm an X."

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Potentially clarifying analogy:

"FiM fan" is to "brony" as "Star Trek fan" is to "Trekkie".

Except that's what brony generally means. It means, "I like MLP [and I'm male, unless I'm using it in a gender-neutral way]"

So the difference is only the difference between liking something and giving yourself a nickname because you like something? I just don't understand the point you're trying to make. Usually I agree with the things you post on here (as far as I can remember), but this doesn't even make sense.

lol, okay? I'm not the one who came up with that analogy, I was just running with it.

how is that any different from the comment that diet_poison even responded to in the first place
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
You realize not all bronies are even really aware of this, right?

How is it supposed to be their responsibility to take the heat for something they didn't even know about? Why should they change the name that makes sense for them?

The only thing in that I really agree with is that more not-asshole bronies should call the assholes out more often (when they do realize they're there). But many of them just aren't involved much in the online fandom, which is why they're not really aware of what's going on. If you saw a person in the street wearing a brony shirt, would you give them shit??

I hate this idea of "tacit support". No. That's like saying anything I don't bother to talk about is A-ok with me. There are too many shitty things in the world and there's not enough time to hear everyone's opinion on everything, so I'm not going to assume someone supports something shitty unless they say so or imply it. That just sows more conflict and divisiveness.

[personal profile] visp 2012-12-22 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
How can you be part of Brony fandom and not be aware of how they behave? It's not like they restrict the asshole behavior to some secret, password-protect chatsite.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because there isn't some unified "brony fandom". I mean, there's this whole 4chan etc. subculture, but it does NOT include all people who call themselves "bronies". They can't all telepathically communicate with one another or something.
visp: (Default)

[personal profile] visp 2012-12-22 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you can show some sort of Brony-identified fansite that doesn't have any "brony" behavior, I might consider the possibility, but as it stands, if you call yourself a brony you must have been somewhere online that talks about bronies or somewhere bronies post, which would make it pretty hard to ignore their behavior.

That's what I was going to say. I know a lot of people who would consider themselves part of Anon, but it's not like they explicitly know 100% of the time what other Anons are doing, and it isn't their job to take responsibility for what those people are doing.

I'm gonna back up diet_poison here. A good friend of mine (a really good-hearted, thoughtful guy with three little kids he dotes on) once called himself a brony and was totally confused when I said something like, "haha, maybe if you were more of a douchebag." He really had no idea. And he's a geeky programmer, definitely internet-savvy.

And after you told him about it, did he still choose to call himself a brony?

This is going in my 'fucking THIS'-posts file. So many discussions on f!s degenerate into 'If you're x, you automatically agree with y', and it drives me crazy, but you articulated it much better than I would have.

a) I kind of resent your use of the word "identify", as if being a brony can be/is a part of someone's identity in the way that someone's sexuality, or gender, or religion, or race, or physical ability can be. I think that word has been massively misused in the same way that trigger warnings have been misused and (which now, instead of meaning "an experience that causes a traumatic memory in someone that has experienced trauma", it just means "anything that can even mildly upset or annoy anybody, regardless of whether or not they suffer from a psychological condition").

b) "Identifying" as a brony means that you like the show. It doesn't mean that you support all the opinions and activities of other people who are bronies. What are they going to do, stop watching/liking the show/participating in fandom because some bronies are total assholes, or rapists? That is completely fucking ridiculous. Like, what, am I going to stop drinking tea because at some point in history, a guy who drank tea also raped and murdered women?
