I really thing that you should only hate some bronies. Like most fandoms, there are x % of scum, and then perfectly reasonable people. We have to not get them mixed up and over generalize.

Yeah pretty much. I'm cool with dudes watching shows for little girls, that doesn't bother me. But, separate and unrelated to that, bronies are the fucking worst, many of them are completely terrible, the whole brony movement is full of terrible shit for several reasons. In fact, I would draw a distinction between male fans of MLP in general and bronies specifically, precisely because the latter are so fucking poisonous.

And in my experience most discussion of MLP fandom recognizes this more or less... at least within fandom / on the Internet anyway.

Oh, that's certainly one of the WORST things they've done, but definitely not the only thing. There was the harassment and death/rape threats they hurled at Yamino after the whole Pony-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named debacle, the disgusting porn they drew of Lauren Faust's ponysona, and a whole slew of other minor disturbances.

Not to mentioned they've always been an entitled, creepy bunch of manchildren who act like they are the only demographic that matters in the world and constantly whine about how a show for LITTLE GIRLS doesn't cater enough to THEM, those poor adult, straight, white males.

Well, some people hate bronies because of that, and some people do really hate bronies because they're guys watching a "girls'" show, or because they're awkward and weird (I don't use these as insults,) or any of those reasons. (I'm a female casual fan, here, for context.) Rape is a good reason to hate rapists, it's not a good reason to hate people who like things that the rapists like (unless that thing is actually, you know, rape.)

I'm not defending rapists, I'm just saying that innocent people who share a hobby with someone who's done something atrocious don't deserve to get caught in the crossfire. Direct your anger appropriately.

Except we have bronies defending bronies for simply being bronies. Plus I don't think in even Harry Potter fandom we had people defending real life rapists. Not to my knowledge anyway. Even if HP fandom at its height maybe helped boost fandom wank in general to the stratosphere as the internet was kicking things up a notch.

Brony is also really an optional term, and while it's sad it's been tarnished for those GOOD bronies out there, it's well... optional to associate yourself with this. If you don't want to be associated with these types of people you either order a mass campaign to kick them out or just call yourself a fan. Or maybe both.

I wanted to stick up for bronies at first, too, OP. Mostly just because my older brother is a fan of the show, so he tends to get stuck with the label automatically--he's really, really not a brony, though. Unless you were defending them in the face of actual evidence that they're jerks, I don't see how you did anything wrong. If someone just says "Bronies are gross!", and you respond, "Says who? And why. They're nothing wrong with liking kids' shows.", and they never get back to you with anything substantial, then how are you supposed to know that they have good reasons for their dislike?

Mostly Unrelated Tangent: That's my biggest problem with SJWs. When faced with situations where they could give some links, at least, to educate someone (or even advise them to google [Offender's name] plus [keyword(s)] if they really want to know why a person/thing gets so much hate, they just scream "It's not my job to educate you" and sling shit.

Ok. You know what? I'm sick of this shit. I really really am. Ok. Each and every fandom has their shitty parts. You would be hard pressed to find a fandom in existence that hasn't had some big wankfest, or had some of its members do or say something horrible, in the name of their fandom or not. Yes, some bronies may not be nice people, or have horrible opinions or say something horrible or draw/write something that will haunt the depths of my nightmares. Guess what? So do other fandoms. Not all bronies/ Fim fans/whatever the distinction between the two is this time are like that. Every fandom has their whackjobs. It's part of the internet. Get the fuck over it, stop tarring all fans with the same brush, stop taking a few loudmouths as an example of the whole fandom and for the love of all things sane and rational STOP using bronies as you're personal scapegoat/punching bag. Seriously. Enough.

It's a huge fandom. Some bronies will be douchebags, because some people are douchebags, and you don't filter that out just because they all like the same show.

I'm not responsible for everything a brony does just like I'm not responsible for everything a Trekkie does. That's an absurd standard to apply, and it's not one you see applied to fandoms that don't make people uncomfortable in the gender place.

BRONY IS AN OPTIONAL TERM.

You can just call yourself a fan of the show. YES it kind of sucks to 'lose' the word, but you still have a choice in this matter. Be lumped in with scum like this- or not. Brony subculture while not 100% like this helped to perpetuate and encourage this sort of behaviour. There are good bronies- obviously, because the fandom is big with a large range of people- but if upon finding out about this they can't accept it they can lose the name for themselves fairly easily.

MALE FANS, not just female can call themselves fans too. It's not like you are automatically a brony if you identify as a man as well and like the show.

The fact is, while I won't automatically condemn a brony, I will be at least wary of someone who claims that name until I can further establish they are not a douche. It's a self defence mechanism based on past behaviour. Because at best they are ignorant as to what the name means now. Which is basically perhaps the worst kind of fan imaginable.

I do feel sorry for those good bronies when they find out sometimes but I have to feel for those negatively affected by brony sub-culture first. They matter more and are the real victims in this.
