(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:16 am (UTC)(link)I think Tolkien just assumed that his readers would be smart enough to understand that obviously not every single dwarf is going to look like the norm for his or her species. His mistake, clearly.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)I mean if they want to sex up the dwarfs, then good for them. Whatever sells tickets. But don't pretend that because Tolkien never described dwarfs as being prettyboys that means it's a valid interpretation.

Why can't a short, stout, bearded man be "pretty?"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)For starters, Kili was described as being blonde and with a beard in the Hobbit. So there's not a lot of interpretation with him being brunette and stubbly if your justification is that Kili could have been as such in the actual text.
By your logic, there's no reason why elves couldn't look like Danny DeVito.

Aidan Turner's Kili is neither stout nor bearded.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:40 am (UTC)(link)Blonde is a problem. Having a beard is not (unless you have some sort of minimal length requirement for a man having a beard, which would be silly).
By your logic, there's no reason why elves couldn't look like Danny DeVito.
LOL what? Elves are not described as being short. Therefore, Danny DeVito could not be an elf.
Aidan Turner's Kili is neither stout nor bearded.
He has a beard, and he is stout.
I'm guessing that you take "stout" to mean "broad" or "fat," so let's look at the complete definition of stout:
stout [stout] Show IPA adjective, stout·er, stout·est, noun.
adjective
1.
bulky in figure; heavily built; corpulent; thickset; fat: She is getting too stout for her dresses. Synonyms: big, rotund, stocky, portly, fleshy. Antonyms: thin, lean, slender, slim; skinny, scrawny.
2.
bold, brave, or dauntless: a stout heart; stout fellows. Synonyms: valiant, gallant, intrepid, fearless, indomitable, courageous, stouthearted. Antonyms: cowardly, timid, fearful, timorous, craven.
3.
firm; stubborn; resolute: stout resistance. Synonyms: obstinate, indomitable, steadfast, staunch, unwavering.
4.
forceful; vigorous: a stout argument; a stout wind. Synonyms: intense, sharp, violent.
5.
strong of body; hearty; sturdy: Synonyms: brawny, sinewy, strapping, husky, robust.
Notice how only one of those bullets describes a person's figure.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:55 am (UTC)(link)A man? No.
A dwarf? Yes. Since Tolkien dwarves are described as having beards from the beginning of their lives and they take pride in their length to the point that a dwarf will only be shaved if they are shamed.
Notice how only one of those bullets describes a person's figure.
Yes, which is why when "stout" is used to refer to a dwarf's physical appearance, they aren't referring to their personality.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)Oh my god why do you care so much about this. Did Aidan Turner murder your dog and force you to watch or something?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:15 am (UTC)(link)I wish that I could live a life such as yours, one so blissfully free of anything worth caring about that I could be upset about an actor not matching the description of a character in a children's book.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 04:11 am (UTC)(link)If you're posting in an argument about dwarves and Tolkien on FandomSecrets, you don't get to pull the "Oh, why do you care about such silly stuff?" when you run out of material without looking like a hypocrite. Because clearly if such stuff didn't matter to you, you wouldn't be posting on this thread.

It is not necessarily referring to physical appearance.
