Wow, I can think of several people I know who could easily be the creator of this secret. HUH.

I find this sort of sweet.

(And hey, they might even suspect, but as long as everyone is having fun playing the game, why call "foul"?)

Well, when you get bored of it, just tell them that they explained enough that you get it, and then you went online to see what it was all about, and now you are converted.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, this is actually kind of adorable. It's maybe a bit crappy not telling them, but it doesn't really sound like anyone is getting hurt by it, and you all seem to be enjoying yourselves.

You are both an idiot depriving yourself and a shit friend who they don't deserve.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Whew. Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way.

[personal profile] scarletsymphony 2012-12-22 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, you have some strong feelings about this. why? she just sounds like a deeply insecure person.

which isn't the shittiest thing a friend could be.

I agree with this, and not just because I'm one of those people who pretends not to understand something just to see how the person explaining sees a particular thing.

I completely agree.
This secret could have been about my Ex who was a closet fangirl but loved getting me to tell her about fandom stuff. Eventually I found out and we laughed it off.

You know what else she was keeping secret? She was sleeping with two of my friends and had been for months.

A long running if "mild" is a sign that someone is not to be trusted.

Your friends (and family, and any other human being) can always be lying to you. Anyone can at anytime always be lying to you, regardless of how "honest" they come across as. Yes, finding out someone lied about something tells you that they lied, but that's confirmation, not revelation.

The world moves on, because everyone lies, and sometimes you're the one being lied to instead of the one lying. I'd rather my friend be lying about fandom involvement and indulge my blathering rather than be "honest" to hide something much more serious.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually. I do that too. Not so much because I like them explaining it, so much as I'd never admit I indulge even being surrounded by people who do.

I...sorta do this?

Like, I have a lot of geeky fandom friends...but they're all involved in the fandoms and even the types of fandoms I'm not in. Most of them play RP Card games (i.e. Magic, YuGiOh, ect.) and video games and are in the anime and manga type fandoms, whereas I'm in TV show, book, and movie fandoms most of them are only peripherally aware of. These two sides of fandom have very different cultures and terminologies and attitudes attached to them...but they are both still "fandom". So they explain everything to me, but I already understand about half of it - they like to talk about it, so I let them keep talking. :)

Don't feel too bad about this, OP.

If I found out my friend was lying to me about something like that even if it was to make me happy I would be both really disappointed in them and pretty hurt.

Because I don't lie to my friends, and I expect them to do the same back.

This secret actually sounds funny, but maybe it's just because of my experiences with this in the past. XD

I don't think you're a horrible person for this, but I'd still be somewhat uncomfortable talking to you. Just, well. It seems kinda...creepy? On some level. Maybe just because I couldn't stand pretending not to know something I do, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how your friends would react if they found out about this. For all I know they might think it was hilarious and not be bothered by it at all. However, if I was your friend - and if this charade has gone on for long enough - I know that I would feel patronised and insulted when I found out. You know, like you were just humouring my interests and allowing me to think I was the knowledgeable one about a topic, like an adult would act towards a child. I would also be like 'hey, so you could joined me in my fandom activities/fun for x amount of time and instead chose to pretend you didn't know about it so you didn't have to or whatever else bullshit reason you had? fuck you.'

sorry for the rambling, sweary last part, i've just had a glass of wine. but i really am the type of person of would be pissed if my friend humoured me about something (and i have been pissed in the past with my friends who've done that, on a smaller prank level). so yeah. my advice would be for you to basically say you're in fandom now - you don't have to give a timeline, but just say you've got into it recently. and then you can have fun with your friends talking about fandom on an *equal* level, and they can still explain stuff to you from fandoms you're not interested in, and you can do the same to them, and you can discuss them properly. i mean really.

Not cool or cute or funny imo.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So a lot of people apparently find this "cute" and harmless. I find is awful. I would be so hurt if I found out a friend had been lying to me, and not just once but over and over again. I would feel like an idiot if I ever found out, and I'd then always be self conscious around that person and wondering what else they might be lying about. I wouldn't feel comfortable explaining or expounding on anything anymore, afraid that they were secretly laughing because they already knew it already and were just lying for their own amusement.

This is not what I think a friend does.
