Genderqueer myself, and I prefer being called "it" to ze/zhe/whateverthefuck. I'll take "dehumanizing" over being called something that sounds so fucking stupid I can't even.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Also genderqueer, and I also prefer "it" to any of the invented pronouns. To me, "it" is less dehumanizing because at least its an actual word that people use in real life. I have never in my entire life heard someone use xe/ze/se/etc. and I doubt I ever will.

Plus, you know, I really dgaf what people call me. I'm genderqueer and open about it, and I'm mature enough to accept that my appearance is confusing and people aren't going to know what to call me. He, she, it, they, whatever, I really don't care so long as they're not an asshole about it.

SA

Same here. I don't make an effort to throw people by binding my boobs or anything, but when I'm rocking a pixie cut and wearing an oversize t-shirt and baggy jeans and no makeup, people do get confused for a minute until I start talking (my voice is mos def feminine). And you can see the "oh shit, what do I call this person?" look, and I often find myself telling them to call me whatever they want with because I frankly don't give a shit about pronouns.

I swear, people online care way more about this BS than anyone I've ever met outside the internet.

....do you people ITT who like to be called "it" not have names....?

Re: da

Yes. But my name isn't a pronoun. When people have to use prnouns, I'd prefer they used "it" or singular "they" rather than the fucking stupid zhe/zie/ze/hir shit.

I hope I meet more people like you @_@ the internet would have me think every genderqueer person is raving angrily about pronouns but the few I've met IRL have been totally cool with my confusion or mis-speaking or stumbling with words.

For me they're...equally bad, I guess? I would hate to be called "it," and at least ze/sie/etc. is usually used with good intentions. But yeah, unconventional pronouns can be very awkward, and none of them feel natural to me at all.

So I'd rather go with neither.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know why I prefer it, TBH. I just have this visceral "wtf is this shit" reaction to the made-up pronouns even though I understand the intention is supposed to be good. To me, it feels like a more insidious form of othering. I'd rather be called "it" because that's at least acknowledging I'm mundane and real as opposed to being something so inconceivably weird and sparkly that people had to invent a super-special word just to describe and understand me.

But then, I only use "queer" because that's apparently the thing now. Frankly, I find being called that far more offensive than being called a fag or a dyke. The latter are meaningless slang terms. "Queer" is a real word with a real definition and that definition is pretty gross when applied to people.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-26 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
A "fag" is a cigarette and a dyke is a dutch dam.

Gay means happy.

I just want to hug you. You have managed to put my feeling into words perfectly ;.;

Yes to all of this.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This debate between the genderqueer community is the reason why the first thing I always ask someone who states that they are genderqueer, "what are your pronouns?" I don't want to insult someone by objectifying them if they consider "it" to be objectifying, but I also don't want to seem like one of those people who goes too far with social justice or whatever you want to call it.

I don't really know, I guess just want to be sensitive without coming across as condescending? I sometimes worry that even asking that question may come across as condescending, though.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Asking the question doesn't make you condescending. What would make you condescending would be if you started arguing with the answer you're given because you don't feel comfortable calling the person what they want to be called.

I've gotten that so many times when I tell people I don't even care about pronouns. I get the "well you really should, you know, because I'm not genderqueer but I took Sociology 101 and I know more about this than you" line. And virtually nothing in the world will piss me off faster than that attitude that I don't know my own identity.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This convinces me of nothing more than that all Sociology 101 teachers in the US need to be smacked upside the hide with a clue-by-four.

(I was going to say shot, and end with "...then the lawyers," but I didn't want to chance people not getting the Shakespeare reference, what with CT still being in the news.)
