The Sarah Jane Adventures: is it any good?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:16 am (UTC)(link)So now I wanted to branch out to this, but I wanted to get some opinions on it first: I've had horribly cringe-inducing second-hand-embarrassment experiences with some spin-off shows focusing on a supporting character from the parent show, and from the bit of crossover I saw in Stolen Earth/Journey's End, it's hard to tell much about it. I know it's kind of a reverse-Torchwood in that it's lighter and more kid-friendly than DW whereas TW is darker and less kid-friendly than DW, but I gotta say that while I enjoyed Torchwood, it...wasn't consistently good or all that satisfying in the long-run, and I'm not really interested in another spin-off that goes that way.
So...does the show make sense and fit in the Who universe? Does keep its characters in perspective? Do the stories make sense? (well, as much sense as something related to DW can ;)) Are the characters' personalities good and do they stay intact? Are the stories of solid quality? How about the special effects and budget? Do the seasons vary a lot in quality? Blah blah blah?
(also, I hope this isn't a futile request: pleasepleaseplease don't make this into a Doctor Who or Torchwood wankfest or bashing thread. Pleeeeeease.)
Re: The Sarah Jane Adventures: is it any good?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:21 am (UTC)(link)If you compare it to other childrens' shows it is well plotted and well produced. If you compare it to adult shows the villians are not very threatening, the plots are less complex, and the funds are lower than the big shows.
Basically, I would rate it:
Brilliant adult shows
Good adult shows
Very good children shows (inc. SJA)
Re: The Sarah Jane Adventures: is it any good?
Also, it fits into the Who universe quite nicely: the stories are generally pretty small-scale and the villains and crises are rather low-key (still lots of end-of-the-world stuff, but it's the difference between "Boom Town" end-of-the-world and "The Christmas Invasion" end-of-the-world, you know?) Which means it's well suited to the character of Sarah Jane, who is a), made of win, and b) not some weird epic badass who doesn't mesh with her previously established character. She's pretty consistent with her appearance in School Reunion, smart and sneaky and not very action-y, but with some sci-fi gadgets and access to lots of information, if that's what you were concerned about.
Keeping in mind the kid audience, I think the writing is actually very good. Heavy on the characterization and entertainment factor, rather than complex plots or subtext.
The budget is kinda low, and it admittedly shows, but if you're an Old Who fan, I don't think it'll be enough to bother you ;)

The first season is kind of eh. Gets a lot better in season two. :3
Re: The Sarah Jane Adventures: is it any good?
(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)It's good. As with all of the Whoniverse it has to be viewed with a bucketful of suspension of disbelief.
But it's consistently good, and waaay better than one would expect with such a tiny budget! I think it works because it's less about wacky aliens and is much more character-based... It's sometimes quite emotional in a very relateable/realistic way. Half of the time the aliens are metaphors for a character's inner demons... which may or may not be your thing but I love it!
If you do give it a go, hope you enjoy it!
