I have never seen anyone say this, only that she isn't as stupid as her haters make her out to be, nor is she (most commonly) responsible for the entire downfall of the Starks. I don't think that's saying she's the most brilliant mind Westeros has ever known, exactly. Just not a dullard.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I... didn't even know some people really thought she would have been a good leader. Most of her most important decisions are based on her emotions as a mother (capturing the Queen's brother because he might have tried to murder her son, freeing their most valuable hostage to maybe get her daughters back) and that is quite a terrible way to make decision when you want to play with the other cold-hearted bastards who play the game of thrones.

Not saying that all her advices were bad, or that Robb and even Ned didn't do their own mistakes and might have benefited from listening to her from time to time but as a whole, I think she was even worse.

lol. I've never seen anyone say that she is like some political genius.

I think Robb would have done well to listen to her more than he did. I think she's clever and generally has a good understanding of what is going on. But obviously she's not like on the level of Varys or Littlefinger or Tywin when it comes to politics.

This.

I don't know why anyone expects her to be on the level of Varys or Littlefinger with that kind of political savvy. She's a good match for Nedd Stark, not a Lannister.

Well, there are plenty of people who seem to think everything would have been perfect and flawless and wonderful if everyone had just listened to her. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen her hardcore fans insist that Robb lost the war solely because he didn't listen to his mother. Because apparently her advice was so consistently stellar and amazing and flaw-free that surely victory would have been inevitable!

And then there are the fans who honestly think she would have been the best choice for the Iron Throne. Now that truly deserves a "lol."

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
You might want to keep this in mind next time someone has the audacity to say they think Jon Snow is a good leader, and you go off on a rant about how his stans think he's so perfect and free of flaws and blah blah blah. This may come as a shock to you, but saying he is a good leader =/= "omg he's so perfect and is the best leader and never makes mistakes."

When Jon fans read comments like that, believe me, they seem just as silly and lol-worthy to them as this secret seems to you.

Christ! "I like Cat, but I think the Cat Stans overestimate her political savvy." One. Fucking. Sentence. What are you, a Kpop fan?

And yeah, she's a good person (with a few flaws) and reasonably intelligent, but she has no political experience, whereas others have been doing it for decades. So she's not exactly going to be Cat Sforza.

"What are you, a Kpop fan?"

I lolled.

I'm starting to think we need a guide to writing secrets.

I find that she's a well rounded character with her own POV.

She has some ulikable points, such as how she treats Jon Snow, and she has many admirable points.

If she's played like a fiddle at all it's because intrigue isn't her strongest point, but she makes a good advisor to her son Robb on the subject of handling his men and she's proven herself a strong and capable character.

I enjoy reading her parts of the story.

I like Cat

but not enough to read all that.

I waded through it all and then it wasn't even dramalicious enough to be worth the effort. :(

Ah well. It's for the best because I'm headed out in like 5 minutes so I wouldn't have even been able to participate in the wank if it had been a wanky secret.

Don't forget to include an introduction and conclusion paragraph to your essays, or your teacher will mark you down.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
She never struck me as being either stupid or hugely astute, just someone of fairly competent intelligence. Of course, compared to Ned or Robb she's pretty well up in the political acumen stakes... but that's like saying that a character's more ladylike than Arya, or less of a shit than Joffrey.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Single-handedly *stop* the war? She started it. She's just as much as an idiot as her husband and son.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
How did she start the war? Was it holding hostage Jaime Lannister?

I've read some of the first book, but didn't get all the nuances, and all the names so some of this is lost on me.

idts. No one is as much of an idiot as the Stark men.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I gave up reading quite early on. I have no idea who this person is, and I was becoming more and more convinced of my own unworthiness.

Surely I should know of the great and important political figures. SURELY I should know of the ones who have succeeded despite presumably not being Etonian posh boys or the local equivalent thereof.

Then I glanced at the comments. I still have no idea who this is, but at least I remembered it's Fandom Secrets.

That said, I like this secret. Well-written.

Good point

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Saying she was better at the game than Robb isn't saying much at all. Girlfriend got her ass handed to her every time she encountered someone who was, y'know, fairly competent. The idea that nothing bad would have happened and the North could have won the war ~if everyone had just listened to Catelyn~ is pretty laughable.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
GoT stans are like this for pretty much any character they stan for.
wauwy: (legolas fancast)

Yes.

[personal profile] wauwy 2012-12-31 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I also don't know why Sansa fans insist she, too, is awesome at the Game of Thrones from her harrowing experiences in King's Landing. I guess it's logical to think Littlefinger might teach her to be so, but so far there's really nothing to indicate that she's got more innate skill at it than her mom. Which is to say, better than anyone else in her family, but still not very good. I understand it's probably a backlash against her haters just like it is with Cat, but really, are we reading the same books here?

The major chessmasters in the GoT are the Lannisters, by which we really have to mean Tywin and Tyrion; Littlefinger; Varys; and the Tyrells. And the Tyrells are going to win because they also have strong family bonds, which the others do not.

Que? I stan Catelyn pretty hard, but I'd never say she had the political acumen of Tywin or Petyr or anything. Just that she was a lot smarter than most of the men around her (most! Not all), and if her doof son had listened to her more often he'd still be alive. She's not the best player in the books, but a lot more canny than she gets credit for. And seeing as people who don't like her tend to claim she 'started the war' by taking Tyrion hostage, I guess we might get loud in response

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. I wouldn't have liked Cat if she were some kind of battle strategy genius. She just knew when to keep one's head low (also seems to be the case with Sansa) and no one recognized the value of that very simple tactic.
