Nightmares

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone on here have nightmares every night? Because I do and have had them for as long as I can remember. I also don't have good dreams. There are sometimes good moments in a nightmare (I had a dream once where I was being chased but saw some cool looking horses), but never a dream that is good unto itself. And my nightmares usually involved being chased or murdered or finding gruesome scenes.

I wouldn't say that I have nightmares every night. To me, a nightmare is shocking or horrifying. My dreams are more tense or anxious - but they are consistently like that, I can only really remember having one unambiguously positive dream. I've never had a dream where I've been murdered, but like you, I've been chased - in fact, the vast majority of my dreams that I can remember, I'm being chased relentlessly, moving from one hiding spot to another, and none of them are ever good enough.

It kind of sucks, doesn't it?

Not every night, but I do have some recurring ones. My worst and most frequent nightmare is the one where I'm having really heavy menstrual bleeding and either I can't get to a bathroom, or I'm on the toilet and suddenly notice that people are watching me. Then there's the one where I'm on stage and forget my lines, and the one where I'm back at the school where I had nervous breakdowns almost every day, and the one where my high school counselor (who was kind of a self-righteous asshole) is touching me, and refuses to stop no matter how I ask because it's "just" my shoulder or something (any kind of touching is traumatic for me, especially by a male), and the one where...*rambles on and on*

Sorry to hear that Anon.

This is a really weird topic to come up today, because I pretty much stopped having nightmares when I started lucid dreaming. I didn't even know WTF lucid dreaming was until today when I saw this Cracked article: http://www.cracked.com/article_20190_the-5-weirdest-things-that-influence-your-dreams.html

Which explains a lot. It's also really nice to know that it's a thing with a name, and that I'm not just even weirder than I thought.

yep, almost every night, and almost always horribly gruesome and gory. For as long as I can actually remember. Honestly I'm kind of relieved that I'm not alone in that :\

I have both night terrors and nightmares but it's because of PTSD. I knew someone in counseling who was like you (no PTSD but nightmares every night) and they figured out it was because of some sort of salt imbalance they had in their diet and how their body processed it. Maybe talk to a doctor and see if there is something in your environment triggering them? It could be something as simple as the laundry detergent you use or something you eat or drink every day.

I was going to comment in a very similar way. I have PTSD, and that's my reason. I've been told by several mental health providers that nightmares of that frequency aren't typical, and should be discussed with your doctor.

I haven't had a nightmare in...years. I barely ever get them. All my dreams are highly surreal and either neutral or positive and tend to involve lots and lots of standing around talking. :( I'm sorry? I can't imagine what it's like to have nightmares or bad dreams every night, I think it would make me not want to sleep.

I do remember, however, that for a period of a few months a couple years ago, I had a recurring dream almost every night that I was on an operating table in a chaotic ER and the doctor kept asking me to say something if I could hear him, and I could hear him just fine but I couldn't open my mouth or nod or make any noise or indicate that I could hear him. They weren't really nightmares, because for some reason they didn't scare me, they just made me incredibly frustrated, but they were definitely tied to my RL experiences during that period.

I used to have lots of nightmares growing up, almost all the time. I talked to someone about it and most of them went away! It helps to rethink what's going on in your life and what might be causing you unnecessary stress or fear.

No, but I do have recurring dreams about zombie invasions

have you read this?

http://www.cracked.com/article_20190_the-5-weirdest-things-that-influence-your-dreams.html

in page 2:

#2. Unpleasant Smells Lead to Unpleasant Dreams

Scientists in Germany experimented on 15 subjects by pumping different smells into the room as they entered REM sleep. During the study, they wafted the odors of things like rotten eggs and roses across the noses of the sleeping subjects and asked them about their dreams after they awoke. It turns out that the unpleasant smells tended to trigger more negative dreams, as you'd suspect, but the dreams didn't have anything to do with the smells (the smell of something rotten didn't make them dream of zombies or fart monsters or anything like that).

The researchers believe that this is due to the effect that smell has on the limbic system of the brain, which governs emotion and behavior. This appears to be a hugely underrated factor in how our brains work, by the way -- we did a whole article a while back on weird ways you're subconsciously affected by smells and learned that manipulating smells is almost a form of mind control. According to one expert, our sense of smell alone has "direct access to the subconscious areas of the brain, which affects emotion, mood, and memory." Even when you sleep.

So if you're suffering from chronic nightmares, maybe you should think less about the stress in your life and more about the whole farting roommate situation.

Yes, every other night and I'm sick to death of it, it's horrible. It leaves me upset and drained the next day.
I actually didn't realize until recently that this wasn't normal.
