Whom do you identify yourself with?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you generally identify with fictional characters? If yes, which ones?

It's 'cause I just discovered that the only characters I can feel are Colonel Cathcart, General Peckem, Rosalind Franklin from The Double Helix (I don't think I have a clear enough concept of her RL self) and freaking Gollum.
I may or may not have some problems with self-esteem.

Nah, not really. And it always wigs me out when other people say that characters remind them of me (most recently Deb from Dexter) because I don't see it at all. I'm skinny and tall and I like to run? Really? Is that all it takes?

Lavi* and Sokka are the two that come to mind for me.

I know I've "connected" with various characters on some level or another because they reflect facets of my own personality, but those two are the biggest ones.

*Mind, I don't mean Bookman Jr, but his actual Lavi persona - the excitable dork.

I don't think I've ever seen one single character that I've said "OMG THAT'S ME RIGHT THERE!" about, but there's a few I get bits and pieces from: Wendy Watson from The Middleman, Agnes Nitt from the Discworld books, Temperance Brennan from Bones. I've been told I have things in common with House, which...yeah, not my favorite thing to hear, ever, but I think it was meant as a compliment. But in general any character I really respond to, to the point of writing about/fangirling excessively, is due to some level of identification. Otherwise I wouldn't care.

My friend always says I'm like Sheldon Cooper AND like Dexter Morgan.
I guess it's kind of true, there are similarities, but honestly? I DON'T KILL PEOPLE

But me identifying myself with any fictional characters? I don't think so...

I'm the Hanners, the Zuko, the River, the Katarina, the Anakin, the Gino. Lately I've been the Caithe.

The characters with whom I identify most strongly are probably Squall Leonhart of Final Fantasy VIII and Mark Corrigan of Peep Show. Neither of these, I suspect, are particularly good signs.

I do identify with some fictional characters, but they're usually not my favorites. I get the feeling that this is rare for some reason? Like, most people say a character is their favorite because they identify with him/her, which...okay, yeah, I definitely understand that, but I don't understand why it's so pervasive. I do love characters I identify with a whole lot, and they often bring me a huge amount of joy because I relate to them so well, but I usually don't find them very interesting as a character, if you know what I mean.

Like, for example, in the West Wing fandom, I identify with Toby Ziegler so much that every single scene of his pretty much results in me laughing constantly and going "why can't I say stuff that clever when I THINK those EXACT kinds of things five hundred times a day?" (in fact, I probably identify with him more than any other fictional character ever), but my favorite characters are Josh and Leo, neither of whom I identify with very much and therefore find far more fascinating to watch and think about.

Not really, I'm a boring person to be honest. That's why it's kinda strange to me when people talk about having to identify with a character to like them. I have never really identified with any character, and certainly not those who end up my favorites.

I don't really identify with characters, but I do tend to admire my favorites. Like, I wish I was more like the characters I like best, because they are usually people who are courageous or kind in situations where I wouldn't be.

Unless they're dark/evil characters, and I like them because their thought processes tend to be unfathomable (and thus interesting) to me.

Maybe small parts of them, but I've never looked at a fictional character and said, "Yep, that's me."

The way John Watson (BBC Sherlock version) sometimes lets Sherlock walk all over him or generally get away with things he shouldn't sometimes reminds me of myself and some of my past relationships, but other than that we're extremely different.

I identify with Cesare from 'The Borgias'. I have a sibling (the Juan) who acts irresponsibly and threw away everything he was ever given. As the responsible one it is very frustrating to see my mother (the Rodrigo) shower him with love and affection while she piles more expectations on my shoulders.

I don't even get a Micheletto. Dammit, Universe! I want a kinky redhead to whip!

Watching The Hobbit last week I realized, I am a hobbit. Don't like change, big feet, doesn't really want all that adventure. And if a bunch of men came into my house and started eating/destroying everything I'd have the same reaction as Biblo. "Wait! Wait! Stop you can't-" *more dwarfs and things destroyed* "...okay." :(

I often identify more with music than fictional characters, but I see a lot of myself in Annie from Community and Garcia from Criminal Minds. Also sometimes Shinji Ikari, when I'm at my lowest points.

I don't tend to identify with characters, aside from maybe noticing a trait or two that I share with them, except for when I starting watching Modern Family and I identified so much with Mitchell, and I felt sure that if I had grown up with siblings I would have been a lot like Alex.

I occasionally find myself identifying really strongly with characters. Right now, I identify with Tony Stark, insofar as his issues go. I may be smart as well, but I feel like I'm not doing anything with that. I also can't not care what people think or be charismatic like him, so it's really just the issues.

Painfully so with Abed Nadir.

Not that we're extremely similar, but the feeling of being a neuroatypical oddball who worries about being left behind or out of control really resonates with me.

I feel like I'm the lovechild of Wes Mitchell (Common Law) and sitcom!Miranda Hart. Which is really weird because they are such different people and yet they're both so me.

I guess I sympathise with some more than others if I think their situations or attitude are similar to my own (or as similar as they can be while flying spaceships or fighting magical beasts)

Which tends to be foolish, angry people 'cause that's kind of how I feel on the inside.
Also shy quiet people because that's also how I feel on the inside.

So I guess I lightly identify with them in that sense, but I wouldn't say it's deep because I know most of the parts that make up myself, while fictional characters it's only

Usually not in a really major way, but sometimes in a vague sort of way, more like that character embodies a few traits/flaws I have and it makes me love them...especially when those are traits people don't much tend to like. Or if it's breaking some kind of stereotype (large part of the reason I love Rainbow Dash so much? she's portrayed as being both a "tomboy" i.e. into traditionally male activities and not caring much about traditionally female activities, but definitely still feminine, and I'm kind of like that even if it's not as extreme and I don't really do sports...)
