Yeah, I don't think I ever see anyone keeping this a secret. Plenty of people who prefer or exclusively enjoy non-con with female victims keep that a secret, though.

I was just reading a post from a friend on how her childhood was less than ideal and fandom - especially writing fic - made her feel so much better.

Not everyone aims to get published who write fic - some people just do it for fun. And that's nothing to look down on them for.

1. Writing for those people is a hobby and, like any other hobby, they can choose to take it to the next level and make a career out of it or they can just continue to treat it as a hobby. Would you judge a knitter who only knitted for fun and not as a "professional"? Same thing.

2. You don't know that it *is* their major creative outlet, even if they write a lot. They could have other creative outlet outside of the internet and fandom including...

3. ...professional writing. Yes, it is possible to be a fan fic writer and a professional writer.

Eh, I'm inclined to say that it's hot either way, but there's so much noncon shit out there with women (I'm talking porn, not just slash fandom) that noncon with guys is more refreshing and interesting. On any given day /d/ or /gif/ will have whole threads with hundreds of pics of it. /y/'s lucky to have a smattering. I'm honestly kinda a bored of it.

Also I'm more attracted to dudes, so there's that.

In that I think a lot of people who write fanfic stick to fanfic because it's easier than coming up with original settings. In fanfic most of the work is done for you. It's also less soul crushing for someone to tell you you got some Buffy character wrong than that your own creative vision sucks.

At least you feel bad for judging? That makes the difference.

you're an asshole because you assume someone's hobby has to become their career. why the fuck does it? i tried to make writing my future career and it sucked all the fun out of it so i couldn't write anymore. just because someone is good at or enjoys art or writing or baking or fixing cars doesn't mean it has to be their life's work. i can be a doctor who enjoys decorating cookies in my spare time, the question is why the fuck do you care if i'm a doctor and not a baker instead?

You sound like my ex-boyfriend (who is a publishedt author) when he tells me I am "waisting my time playing around". Fuck that, fuck him and fuck you, fanfiction is not onliy my main creative outlet, but also my main outlet period. I am in therapy. Writing angst about fucking Dolph Lundgren's and Sylvester Stallone's characters helps me channel negative shit out of my mind. It's better for me than any publisher's deadlines will ever be.

For some people, they're content to just write fanfic, and that's fine. But for those who actually aspire to become professional writers and they only write fanfic? I'm judging them right along with you.

I just can't help thinking you write movie reviews for a small paper in Lansing Michigan. Talking about why all the people you would have been writing about suck.

At least you know it, Anon. Not everyone chooses a creative path for their life's work. Sometimes fandom is enough, or even all there's time for. And quit projecting. Just because you were a little shit when you wrote fic doesn't mean everyone else is.

tbh while you ARE being unfair here, i have ONE specific friend i sort of feel this way about. but only because she never went anywhere with her life and spends all her time writing teen slash but bitches that she'll never be a professional writer... but... then she never writes anything original. she's ruined friendships and relationships, gotten fired, all because of her obsession with fanfic.

so really my frustration with her really isn't about fanfic, really, but her issues and such...idk this was like 5 years ago and i'm one of the friends she pushed away so maybe she changed. but i CAN understand where you're coming from on very individual bases. but not everyone is my old friend... some people it's just a fun hobby and they never have to "progress" to "serious" writing or anything. they can lead fulfilling lives that don't involve writing anything else.

2. Why do you think that a person can't write both fanfic and original fiction?

3. You say "if you write a lot of fanfic" -- how much fanfic can a person write before they become a hopeless loser in your eyes, exactly?

Some people only start writing fic in college, or even after, married with kids and everything. Maybe they're writing a lot because the kids are finally off at school and they have some time to themselves again. Your problems =/= everyone else's. Quit projecting.
