Oh my god say what you mean and stop shitting on tumblr. Your friend abandoned you and you're hurt. That's fine. It has NOTHING to do with tumblr. You are able to have ALL these things you mentioned on tumblr too. You know why? Because it's about the PEOPLE not the WEBSITE.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
butthurt tumblr stan?

...just want to point out that Tumblr is a really shitty site for doing a lot of fannish things, like having discussions and forming communities.

I mean I think OP is being passive-aggressive, silly, and possibly clingy but really you just got suuuuper defensive of a website. a WEBSITE. that people have very good reasons not to like.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe for you. But I've seen more meta and more fannish dicussions since moving to tumblr than I ever saw on livejournal. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean that's the truth of the matter.

Okay then, explain to me--and I do mean this without sarcasm--how you have a fannish discussion on tumblr. Like, to keep it to something we know, once a big discussion starts in the comments on Fandom Secrets, you can jump in anywhere on the thread, reply to any person on the thread, and everyone can see your replies--can see ALL the replies at the same time, see if someone said what they were about to say, respond to that, and it's all right there.

Is there a way to do that on tumblr?

Because I love it, but as far as I can see, the only way to have a conversation is reblog reblog reblog, and responses and replies get lost in the aether, or piled on top of each other, and the like, especially if you have more than two or three people trying to be involved. On LJ it's pretty easy to jump in, no matter how many people are talking. On tumblr...I dunno, I'll just give 'em a reaction image of Troy crying or something.

Re. Blog. Ing. Or fan mail if you want to talk to a very specific person.

Yes, it gets cluttered (wish you could scrunch them up or something) but, you CAN have a nice discussion going with that. Plus, with the names attached that way and all, it's not hard to keep up with. And you can go to your POSTS tag that's in the right corner of the thing (or it is with missing e) that has everything you posted and see who all commented on what thing you posted and you can easily keep going with that.

It's not ideal and some discussions get disjointed, but it can be done.

Yes, LJ and DW are easier, but with most of the fannish activity over there now, you can find ways around it. It's not that difficult if you give it the proper amount of effort.

Nothing is gonna be given to you on a silver platter.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing is gonna be given to you on a silver platter.

No. But the platter on which it is given could be a bit more user-friendly.

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-01-28 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
So much for "without sarcasm." "Re. Blog. Ing." was the exact option I mentioned, and sorry, it's a pain in the keister. Fan Mail...if you mean "Asks," then those aren't rebloggable, and question-answer-done isn't a discussion. *EDIT* Okay, Fan Mail's different, but it's just a PM system. One-on-One conversations are great; that's what I have e-mail for. Fandom conversations on social network sites should really include the fandom folks. So the only thing to do for that on tumble is "Re. Blog. Ing." Which gets messy, especially if you have more than two or three people involved in the conversation.

So, assuming everyone involved puts forth a lot of extra tracking effort, doesn't mind cluttering up their main page with repeat reblogs + whatever new paragraph they added to the discussion, and that every other person in the discussion also doesn't mind filling up their main page with the same reblogs, and that you watch your posts tag like a hawk, and watch EVERYONE ELSE'S like a hawk to see all the other threads that the conversational road is going down...you can have almost the same sort of conversation you can have on LJ.

That "proper amount of effort" is a hell of a lot, and calling it that is pretty condescending to folks who are maybe working multiple jobs and trying to have a social life, etc. I put a lot of effort into tumblr, and while I like it for the easy image sharing and the lols, it saps way more of my time than LJ ever did.

And I'm not asking for a "silver platter"--no need to be rude. I'm asking for...huh, surprisingly enough, what we've got here on dreamwidth or LJ. Or heck, numerous other sites that allow for discussions. It's not a new or exclusive thing. I'm not asking that of tumblr, it's a completely different animal, and until they allow nested comments (or if you've got someone like the DCWKA blog, where they also add in a Disqus option), it's never going to allow for extended conversations between multiple people who don't feel like devoting their entire span of free time to having those discussions. I'm saying that, well, tumblr being what it is, why not let fandom stride both formats just a little bit? Tumblr for art and quick stuff, LJ for fic and discussions and the like.

So really, you didn't answer my question at all, or rather you did and the answer is "no"--there is no easy way to have a discussion on tumblr. That doesn't mean you have to jump to tumblr's defense in all snarkery. I like tumblr. But it Has Its Problems. Everything does. And bringing that up isn't wrong.

For serious. If the LJ/DW community is dead, no meta or discussion is happening, full stop, regardless of how useful the setup is.

Tumblr is where all the people in my fandoms are these days, and that's where all the action happens--pictures, videos, cosplay, meta, asks, RP, all the fun stuff I love about fandom.

Dear god how some people fail to understand that LJ/DW are not the be-all-end-all of fandom discussion.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
And some people fail to understand that 'Tumblr sucks for discussion' =/= 'It can't possibly ever happen!'

Honest question here. How do you have fannish discussions without reblogging everything so much it clogs up the dashes of everyone following you?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you really have that much to say? Or do you have some need to have it all in your blog? I honestly don't understand your question.

If it's the latter just 'like' it and move on with your life, you can access your likes via the dashboard.

da

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Um, no. It has everything to do with the site. I can't stand tumblr and I refuse to make one, so if my friends can't be bothered to have some alternative way of getting in touch, then so be it. It hurts, yeah, but clearly I wasn't important enough to them to bother keeping contact with, so whatever. Why should I have to follow everyone to a different website just because they're fandom sheep? Why do I have to be the one putting in all the effort to keep in touch? Friendship is a two-way street. The person who left needs to put in just as much work to stay in touch as the person who stayed.

Re: da

Wowzer. So...your friends(multiple) aren't important enough to you for you to make a tumblr, even if it's just to keep in touch with them, and that's you standing your ground. But you(singular) aren't important enough for them to keep up with an additional social networking site on top of the one that most of their friends and fandoms have already migrated toward, and that's them being selfish.

Got it.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Friendship is a two-way street.

I think you need to read this, over and over again, and consider the fact that you're not living by it.

Every single one of your "friends" could very easily say, "you can't be bothered to make a tumblr. So be it." But you don't see that, do you?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-28 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
They're honestly just whiny because they're set into a rut. LJ-style communities had been the standard for the better part of the decade until Tumblr came along. People just don't want to change. Same kind of people who throw a fit every time their site of choice changes a little bit but then never actually stop using it.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-28 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Except for all the people who left LJ because the site changes got stupider and stupider.

But still wish there was a good place for communities and discussions that don't clog up ones newsfeed.

I'm not saying Tumblr is bad but really you act like everyone HAS to participate in Tumblr and has no right to complain that there isn't a more user-friendly platform for their fandom. People don't want to use Tumblr because they don't like Tumblr, specifically, not because they "don't want to change".
