Hey let's retell Pride and Prejudice but with even less depth in a setting where the having to get married narrative makes less sense while ignoring all other Jane Austen books kids weren't forced to read in ninth grade

Also Kitty is literally a cat now

You sound angry.

Nah. Just annoyed with a dumb concept is all. Nothing against OP.

I'm sure you really brightened the OP's day.

It's retelling P&P, it's not ignoring the rest of Austen. Do you shit on Clueless for only focusing on Emma?

Are you a purist P&P fan or something? This comment makes so little sense...

Idk I hated Pride and Prejudice but I love the Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I personally feel like the relationships between the women in particular run a lot deeper than they did in the books, and the way Lydia's arc is being written right now really resonates with me. I thought I was gonna loathe her and I turned a complete 180. And they've hardly been talking about marriage at all, other than their mom being a nag about it and even then they've laid off recently in favor of other character growth.

. . .I thought Kitty as a cat was funny.

Is it cool nowadays for people to say they are 'depressed' when they really have a legitimate reason to be just 'sad'? I have nothing against OP, it just bugs me that people are so ready to call themselves depressed - I think it's overmedicalisation that we happily call something an illness, when it's just a perfectly natural emotion.

uh hi

Depression is an illness. Yes some people say they have it when they don't, yes some people use medication when they don't need it, but please do not suggest it isn't a legitimate illness because it definitely is.

Clinical depression is very much a real disorder.

[personal profile] fuchsiascreams 2013-01-31 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you. I do understand what you're saying, and I think the idea that being sad = depression is one that contributes a LOT to the enormous cultural misunderstanding of mood and anxiety disorders, but there is also such a thing as situational depression. The problem is that it's difficult for someone on the outside to tell whether the person has legitimate situational depression, or is just experiencing a normal range of sadness because of life stress.

That being said, it does really bother me when people are like, "I'M SAD! DEPRESSION!", or "I'M MOODY! BIPOLAR!", or "I'M NERVOUS ABOUT THIS ORAL PRESENTATION! ANXIETY DISORDER!". There is a normal range of depression, anxiety, and moodiness that people will feel throughout their lifetime. The problem is that, since most people have experienced the feeling of being depressed, and the feeling of being anxious, they think that their experiences with that normal range of human emotions is what depression the disorder and anxiety the illness is. And it's not. There is a difference between BEING depressed and HAVING depression.

This is probably none of my business, but...

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying you don't have depression, but if you really think you do, I would seriously consider talking to someone. I wouldn't rely on web results - I convinced myself I had something because of an online checklist. Again, I'm not saying you don't have depression, but you want to seriously consider going to a doctor about it. It could be something else, and you need to take the proper steps, whatever it is.

And if it is depression, seeing a doctor is probably a good idea.

So either way...yeah.

LIZZIE BENNET DIARIES.

I've been watching this religiously now ever since the plot has been racing towards its climax. I'm kind of on the edge of my chair about Lydia and Wickham and Lizzie and Darcy and Jane and Bing and EVERYONE JUST BE CUTE AND OK except WICKHAM you dick.

I know there will be a happy end but I'm still excited every time a video gets posted.

I LOVE LBD, anon! /fangirls with you

I'm really glad it's helping you get through a rough time too. :)

That said, if you have reason to believe you might have depression, I'd really encourage you to get it checked out. I put off doing that for a long time and wish I hadn't. This might just be you going through a rough time (happens to everyone), and it might be more. I hope it's the former. Good luck <3

This arc has been absolutely amazing. It's actually made me love Mondays!

Glad it could help you in a tough time, OP. I hope things get better for you.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Stop self-diagnosing yourself with the internet. Go to an actual doctor. Not your mom. She may have a point because she knows you well; she may not. Maybe you don't have Major Depression, maybe you have Dysthymia, maybe you have something else like RBD, maybe you are just down like everyone gets sometimes over shitty things.

It's way too easy to read a description on the internet and think you fit it. It's like reading a horoscope. You start to believe it even if it's not true.

I'm so sick of people reading some stupid crap on the internet and thinking they have it. It trivializes those that actually suffer these illnesses by throwing around the terms like you have medical training.

You may be depressed but YOU NEED TO SEE A PROFESSIONAL and have THEM determine that. Not wikipedia or whatever -- not even NCBI or Mayo Clinic. A website is not a doctor and if it was, we would have no reason to have med school anymore.

Sorry to be so harsh but I really do think you need to see a doctor, not fandomsecrets.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-30 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Um I personally think you are way overreacting here. It's possible to encourage anon to see a doctor without shitting all over them for saying they think it's a possibility in a secret.

My mom was the one who pushed me to get help and I REALLY didn't want to. There's a lot of stigma about seeing psychologists for help and being on medication for depression and I was really afraid for it. It's possible OP is going through something similar. Outside perspective also helps.

I agree that self-diagnosing is a bad thing, but that's if you stop at the internet part, refuse to get real help and tell everyone "omg I have x bad thing". The internet can be a GOOD start for helping you realize what your symptoms point to; the doctor is the next step.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
How do you know her mom isn't a doctor?

Bernie Su said recently that they are planning to do another book after Lizzie Bennet winds down, probably an Austen or Bronte title. I don't know much about Persuasion but I've heard other people requesting it as well (I'm currently reading Emma, which I think would be neat as well, though Clueless did already do the modernization thing pretty well so one of her other books might be better).

*hugs OP*

I love LBD and I'm glad it's helping you through a rough patch. Community did the exact same thing for me a couple of years ago.
However, if you think you're suffering from depression, I think you should see a doctor about it. Please, take care of yourself!
