(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)Having said all that, I definitely see them as more father/daughter myself. Lord knows Buffy needs a decent father figure.

Edit: The only thing that bugs me about the ship is the idea that he can't possibly see her as a daughter because a parent would never ever be willing to let their child go into dangerous situations. I read that in an essay someone wrote about why they shipped once, and it really bugged me.

Yeah, I don't buy that logic either. iirc Quentin Travers called Giles out on having "a father's love" for Buffy (in "Helpless," I think? the cruciamentum ep), and Giles' own conflict in OMwF was that he knew that his protectiveness was holding her back. ~ Part of being a parent is sometimes girrting your teeth and letting your kids do dangerous stuff, because how else will they ever develop independence and self-confidence?
(Also, I just can't see it because I ship Buffy and Spike.)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)Because there's that thing about Buffy... she's the slayer. She didn't get a choice, but they've shown on a couple of occasions that she can't just stop. It's not like sending a helpless girl into a fight, she has the tools to do the job (super strength, senses, reflexes, etc). Of course, Buffy's mom and Giles both would probably prefer she didn't have to do it because of their personal relationship with her, but both of them accept her as the slayer and "let" her go into dangerous situations. (Also, lol, like anyone could stop Buffy from doing what she wanted. "Let" indeed.)
Honestly, I don't see it any differently from the millions of real-life parents whose children serve in the military, or the police force, or become firefighters, or join the Peace Corps... loving your child and being concerned for their safety doesn't prevent them from recognizing that their child is doing something important to help others, and have been trained and equipped to do it as safely as possible. Most of them are probably proud of the field their kid has chosen.

Anyway I never shipped Giles with Buffy - Buffy/Spike all the way! I shipped Giles/Anya and Giles/Willow if I remember correctly, in the sense that I didn't care if they where a side pairing in the fanfics I read...
I have no way of knowing what kind of ships where/are popular in Buffy fandom, because I only read fics (Buffy/Spike ones at that, nothing else) and I found those on Buffy fanfiction sites(no subject)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)That's my theory. I don't ship it myself, but I love how he becomes a father figure to her.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 12:36 am (UTC)(link)That aside, I do agree it's squicky because even when they were less father-daughterish, to use Buffy Speak, they at least seemed to have a platonic love for one another. What's wrong with that? Why does everything have to be sexual?

I think that there's definitely a mentor/father vibe to their relationship when she's a teen, but I can see that morphing into something deeper. I also think that Buffy would naturally turn to someone who knows everything about her and who's been through everything with her. I have a hard time imagining Buffy having a successful relationship with someone who hasn't been on the front lines.
That being said, Buffy ships nicely with lots of people as does Giles.
Be careful, though, OP
(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 03:17 am (UTC)(link)It did me a lot of damage -- one of them, in particular, did me a lot of damage. And the hell of it was, another girl tried to tell me about a really skeevy thing he'd done to her, and I couldn't listen, at the time. I needed him to be the guy I thought he was.
I really, really hope it will turn out very differently for you. I like men and I don't think every guy who teaches art is a skeevebag, but I went through ... four of them, if you count the one I'm currently studying with who started out fine and now makes passes at me. I've never been close enough to this one to be hurt by it, but it's incredibly annoying. I had thought, hey, I'm 40 now, this shit won't happen anymore, but I was wrong.
Again, I truly hope you'll have way better luck than I did, but just FYI, if you ever start to wonder if something is wrong there or get uncomfortable, listen to yourself, okay? I wish I had.
