Meh, I'm a fan of both. I think some of Hill's work is better than some of his dad's stuff. His short stories in particular.

I honestly couldn't make it all the way through Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. It was just... horrible. I thought it had an interesting premise and I liked elements of it, but as a whole... eh.

That said, some of Stephen Kings are pretty eh too. I still prefer his. But he has a bigger body of work to draw comparison from I guess.

I don't think a King fan would begrudge you that opinion.

Anyhoo, I think Hill's work is better than some of King's stuff but not as good as King's best (I.E. The Shining or It).

ILU, both for using i.e. correctly and for including It.

I honestly didn't know his son was a writer. Never heard anyone talk about his books or recommend them before.

It's pretty amusing to see a Joe Hill secret when I bought Horns and Thumbprint on my Kindle not even two days ago! I'd been meaning to read some of his stuff for a while; I took Heart-shaped Box at the library a couple of years ago but didn't had the chance to finish it at the time. I finished reading Thumbprint last night and the ending made me RAGE SO MUCH it's not even funny.

I'm really hoping the same thing isn't going to happen with Horns.

I'm not even going to compare King and Hill though! Sure, not all of King's books are masterpieces, but I have yet to find one that didn't at least entertain me. He's my favorite author, and I think that won't change any time soon. :D

Is Thumbprint new? I haven't heard of it.

I'm going to warn you though, as someone who really liked Hill's Heart-Shaped Box, I really disliked Horns. It started off well but then just went downhill...I don't think I finished it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I got far enough into Heart-shaped Box to really get into the story, so I don't think I'll really be able to compare them! I'm just a couple of pages into Horns, but so far I like the style. We'll see... :)

Amazon tells me Thumbprint was published in 2008. It's a short story though, and I'm not sure how it was published on paper since I personally bought it for my Kindle. The reviews for it are pretty good so I think I may have to reread it eventually, but I think my main problem with it was really the ending. If you've read Stephen King's Cell... it's that kind of ending (which is a bit weird because Cell's ending didn't enraged me half as much!).

I had no idea Stephen King had a son who was also a writer.

Two of them, actually. I had no idea until about a month ago.

I think they both have amazing work & they both have duds. That said, I'm rather partial to Hill. Unless we're talking old school King. Because old school King wins every time.

Really? Because Stephen King has written everything from brilliant stories to utter forgettable crap. And let's not forget the shit weasels, which I think were due to him being on drugs or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really like Hill's short stories at all, but I loved Heart Shaped Box and his comic, Locke and Key, is great.

So I kinda feel about him the same way I feel about King-- not all of his stuff is good, but it IS all well-written.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. I loved Heart-Shaped Box but I was not at all fond of Horns. And I find Locke & Key to be an interesting and creepy story.

Same.

I loved Heart Shaped Box, but I really disliked Horns (and I really need to pick up a Locke and Key trade soon; I want to read it so bad).

He's a good writer but not everything he does is going to be great.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I really loved Heart Shaped Box, but didn't get into Horns or 20th Century Ghosts. Overall, I'd say King is a stronger short story writer, but then he's had decades of experience and a huge body of work in his favor.

(I haven't read Locke and Key, but hear it's amazing.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Joe Hill's books are certainly better than Stephen King's worst books. Say, Insomnia. Couldn't even get through 100 pages of that. But overall, Stephen King has had an incredibly long, prolific, and influential career (notable works: It, The Body/Stand By Me, The Shining, Pet Sematary, Carrie). When you can say the same thing about Joe Hill, then you you might be justified in saying he's better. Otherwise, opinion fail, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Then say "I THINK" or "FOR ME" or "IN MY OPINION" Hill is better than King? Of course if you speak in absolutes people are gonna be "WTF NO YOU DID NOT."

I've never read Hill myself, just sayin'. :)

I completely agree! I loved Heart-Shaped Box and liked Horns and I've only read the first volume of Locke and Key, but I loved it. I've read It and Carrie and I didn't think they were anywhere near as good as Joe Hill's books.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite King novels are The Dead Zone and The Gunslinger. I think it's because they're not his usual horror novels.

Maybe you'll like them too?
