The monster really WAS terrible, but I overlook that for the lovely Van Gogh parts. I'm with most on this one, it made me cry.

Wasn't the monster meant to be an allegory on depression (only Vincent could see it)? I thought it was pretty clever.

Also, I don't think Murray Gold has ever written anything as beautiful as "With Love, From Vincent" (the song playing when Amy finds her name on the sunflower painting) for Doctor Who. I cried, too, when that song came on.

As an artist this one broke me. I always cry when I watch it and it's my favourite of the 11th Dr. episodes. Yes, the monster is rather stupid but the rest just resonates with me so deeply.

Okay, Rule Numero Uno of Who fandom: no matter what your opinion is, no matter how outrageous or rare or I-should-bottle-this you think it is, there is always someone out there who shares it.

Seriously, in this fandom, bottling up your opinions is an exercise in pointlessness that will only result in making you grouchy because no one will ever hold it against you. They're too distracted by how every single other fan around them thinks at least one thing they utterly adore about the show is total shit, and one thing they absolutely hate about the show is the greatest thing to hit the small screen in the history of the human race. Yes, every single one. Trust me.

Oh wait, actually, maybe hating the Brigadier is the one exception to the rule. And even then I'm sure there must one person somewhere on the planet who hates him.

This times, oh, a skabajillion.

I don't love it as much as most people do either tbh (like it wouldn't make my top 10 list). But I don't hate it.

This is one of the only episodes of Doctor Who I've ever seen and I hated it

I have experienced clinical depression IRL too, I don't know what it was, I guess it felt forced or something? "Whooo everyone is going to remember you and your art in the future... but psst only because you killed yourself, whoops, sorry we left that part out"

Yea, this. Not at this level of hate obviously. But this episode was just 'meh...' for me. I really don't see why people loved it so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
While it by no means is the worst episode in Who history (or even the worst episode just in Moffat's run) I can feel you OP. The episode just came off as extremely heavy-handed to me, and the epitome of it all was the Love Actually-esque music at the end that just gave me the worst second hand embarrassment in the world (and I liked Love Actually.)

I largely keep my mouth shut about it though because when I got online after the episode a lot of people seemed to love it, even those who hate almost everything in Moffat's run liked it.

I completely agree qith this secret, this episode is one of my most hated episodes, it can be summed up as the writer spends forty minutes explaining to the audience that Vincent Van Gogh is awesome. If I wanted to know that I'd watch a documentary but I tuned into to Doctor Who.

Okay I admit I winced at the scene near the end when they took him to see his paintings in the future. That part felt heavy handed and stupid... but I still loved the rest of the episode - yes even the monster. And I especially loved the Doctor's quote in the end about life being a pile of good things and bad things and the good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice-versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant... That part worked for me.

It was weak and emotionally manipulative. The whole purpose of the episode was to get people to cry at the end. I did and then got pissed off because I didn't feel the episode had earned my emotional response at all. But I don't really hate it. Wouldn't watch it again, though.

I do agree about the monster. But I still love the episode. Mostly because I related a whole lot to Vincent, and it was really cathartic for me. Whenever I'm having a really bad self-esteem day, I watch that episode, particularly the scene where they take Vincent to the future.

I thought it was trite and sentimental.

*shrugs* I enjoyed it, but to each its own.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think it was TERRIBLE, but I did not cry. At all. Not even a wibble or a tug of the heartstring, thus making me the ~*weird one*~ of my group. Doubly weird because I am usually capable of crying at things like that on a dime. Oh well, try again, DW.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
that's totally valid. i liked it a lot, but i've been fascinated with van gogh since i was a child, so it was totally up my alley.

I've seen way too much Classic Who to think this is a bad monster.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I loved this episode because I struggle with depression, so it was extremely relatable (it makes me bawl every time). It's one of the few good depictions of depression I can think of in media, too, so I find it helpful for people like my mom, who had a hard time understanding me for a while.

That said, it's okay that you didn't like it, OP! Don't feel bad for having your own opinions! No shame in that c:

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, you are free to dislike any episode or adventure based on any reason. Just so long as you don't admit to liking Love&Monsters, people get burned alive for that!

Any Who fan who complains about shony monsters are not true Who fans. Go back and watch Warriors of the Deep until the Mykra starts to look good!
