Right, you're right, fake LJ illness is the only thing that is an issue here, and people with real mental health problems being belittled and assumed to be lying is never a thing that happens.

Has it not occurred to you that the existence of one phenomena reinforces the existence of the other?

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-02-20 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and which one is reinforced when people bring up faking although IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT OP SAID.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
It has everything to do with what OP said because it might very well be what is going on with OP. You can refuse to entertain possibilities because you dislike them, but that doesn't make them any less possible.

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-02-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake, please show me where I refused to entertain a possibilty. I just suggested giving people the benefit of the doubt to be able to narrate their own experience.

So if you think that is a bad idea, we actually have a difference of opinion, and I am reinforced in my comment that you are a terrible person.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Because declaring that someone is a terrible person as a result of having a difference of opinion is totally better than thinking that it might be possible that someone is faking a problem.

You totally have the high ground, here.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, everyone is a terrible person except you, who are more brilliant, perceptive, noble and compassionate than EVERYONE else on the thread.

Now do go away and get over yourself, there's a dear.

You're right, "Consider giving people the benefit of the doubt and not calling them faking liars" is EXACTLY THE SAME a "I think I'm better than everyone."

I am suitably chastened and leaving now!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
The OP's situation is completely the same, regardless of whether their friends have a genuine medical condition or are faking. It doesn't matter if they're actually sick or not, because OP needs to draw fucking boundary lines stat, no matter whether they're actually sick or not.

Nobody (who is not a parent or professional health care provider) is obliged or can be expected to care for someone just because they're sick.

Nobody is obliged or can be expected to care for someone just because they're faking a sickness.

Do you see how in the OP's situation that is the exactly same thing, and therefore bringing up faking is just being a giant fucking douchebag?

*applauds*

a isn't b

"a thing that happens" = / = "the only thing that happens, ever"

Re: a isn't b

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-02-20 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
The point of my original response was to point out that commenters were jumping to "OP's friends are fakes and liars" when that was NOT PART OF THE SECRET.

So all I'm trying to say is "don't assume people are fakers and don't have legitimate problems" when you have no way of knowing.

Re: a isn't b

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
And what everyone else is saying is, "don't assume people have legitimate problems and aren't fakers," which is equally valid. But you don't like that.

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-02-20 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
No I do not think it is equally valid. Especially if THEY ARE YOUR FRIENDS.

If you think it is just as valid to assume that your friends are fake liars as that they are truly representing their own experiences, then yes, I go back my conclusion that a lot of people on this thread are assholes.

Re: a isn't b

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
We're not talking about our personal friends. We're talking about the random people on the internet that the OP is talking about, and that we don't actually know. It's as valid to assume that they are fakers as it is to assume that they are for real, because we don't know them, and given the limited information we have, both possibilities are likely.

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-02-20 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well why the fuck would OP be having deeply personal conversations with people who aren't their friends?

Re: a isn't b

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
possibly because some people vent and bare their souls to everyone who is even somewhat friendly with them, regardless of whether they've been encouraged or invited to do so, and sometimes the recipient of the venting feels guilty about telling them "please don't do this"?

Re: a isn't b

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it's more harmful to dismiss people with legitimate problems than help people with exaggerated/non-existent problems, but that's just me.

Re: a isn't b

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people destroyed by the latter, so in my mind, it's about equal.
