Is that Dean Winchester not being in Hufflepuff? Something's definitely not right. (By which I mean I agree; for some characters, I am convinced that they should be in a particular house and get irrationally annoyed when other people Sort them differently.)

I don't know that it's worth getting worked up about since, as you point out, the house system in Harry Potter is hardly something rigorous or well-worked-out or sensible (like p much everything else in the world of HP really).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, Sorting clearly has a certain amount of flexibility, as one's preferences may be taken into account and they somehow end up with roughly -- or exactly -- equal class sizes in the four houses, imagine that. I would guess few, if any, characters have only one house they could possibly be in.

On the other hand, I am definitely resistant to putting certain characters in Slytherin, because I feel like putting them there is pushing them to become the worst possible version of themselves. (Sam Winchester, I'm looking at you.)

I really don't think non-Harry Potter house sortings should be a thing anyone should take seriously. Every character has many, many different facets, and in the Harry Potter books, house sortings are a narrative tool to draw the reader's attention to the specific traits of particular characters that JKR wants the reader to notice.

Kind of like Hermione being in Gryffindor even though, if a character exactly like her popped up in a completely unrelated book, she'd be labeled a Ravenclaw. Yes, she's brave and so it's not exactly baffling that she's a Gryffindor, but you don't really see why she's definitely not a Ravenclaw until OotP shows that the greatest strengths of her intelligence are really not in the intellectual sphere, but in the social/political sphere.

I agree with the B!S so much.

She tried, sure, but poor Cedric was too little, too late, and Slughorn being merely venal, rather than straight up evil was kind of a poor example of 'Slytherin isn't horrible, really!'

I can't believe I'm saying this, but there's a stigma against Hufflepuff, especially among fans. I think we by and large tend to be creative, extremely intelligent, and feel emotions very strongly. So, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw tend to be the sought-after houses. Slytherin goes for the people who claim to see things as only logical, not really caring about others, and the "ambition" and "misunderstood" aspects appeal to them.

Hufflepuff, though...pretty much assumed to be unintelligent, less ambitious, misfits, and generally displaying traits often attributed to dogs. Which makes me really upset - I'm a proud Hufflepuff!

I could never decide what house different characters from other series would be in. How can people be so sure of which house from a character in a completely different world would be in?

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought the 4 separate houses thing was kinda crap. The defining personalities/characteristics of the houses are things within all of us... just different hats we wear at different times.

Got a big presentation you have to do, but you're scared about it? Wear your Gryffindor hat; you'll do just fine. Have to schmooze and make connections at a party with important people that you don't really care about, but you need to like you so you can advance in your job? Put on them Slytherin pants.

Since when were people not open to putting characters in Slytherin? Fandom idolizes and woobifies to Slytherin to an absolutely massive degree. If anything Slytherin is glorified by fandom.

I can't usually read fic that doesn't match up with my housing either, at least when it comes to a few characters, that being said.

I actually am careful about just slapping people in Gryffindor. Gryffindor is cool, but just a tad overrated.

I'm a Hufflepuff (for what the Pottermore test is worth anyway), and several of my very favorite characters have wound up in Slytherin when I sat down to Sort them for myself (NOT using a test, just my own judgment). There's nothing wrong with that.

I once read a Golden Compass fusion where everyone's daemon was ALL WRONG and it made me mad.

People get super defensive over Hogwarts houses and it just confuses me? Then again the sorting never made terribly much sense to me outside of narrative convenience (see: Neville Longbottom in Gryffindor [YES HE GOT BADASS LATER but when I was reading the books as they came out I was pretty bugged.])

It's all various headcanons, so it's hard to argue right and wrong about these things. I think it's far more important that once they put them in the house that they show how it works. Just because Rowling made every house but Gryffindor to be rather one dimensional doesn't mean that the houses actually are. I mean, look at some of the people in Gryffindor -- they aren't exactly all brave go-getters.

I mean, if I didn't know better I'd put Ron in Hufflepuff. He's far more loyal, trustworthy, true than daring and chivalrous. And I'd put the Weasley twins in Slytherin for being cunning and ambitious and not afraid of breaking rules for a laugh. So... yeah. Arguments can be made.

It also bothers me when people stick an evil/anti-hero character straight into Slytherin because that's the 'bad' house. Not all antagonists are cut from the same cloth, dammit!

I can usually read them if the characters are in what I consider to be the wrong house, as long as everything else is good. I just love it when the focus is on Slytherin or Hufflepuff, because they weren't really explored in the books and people usually have interesting ideas about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahah I know exactly what you meeean

and I know it's silly when I do it too, but I just get SO irrationally miffed when it happens.

once i put ami/sailor mercury in gryffindor on the strength of 'she values her friendships more then her smarts' and because i wanted her to still have the 'isolated because of her intelligence' backstory and a bunch of people got really fucking mad.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember that one night on tumblr there was HP house sorting wank over Teen Wolf characters because a bunch of people didn't agree with this one girl's sorting when she got asked it.

Probably the stupidest thing to me was how I thought every sorting I saw that night was wrong in one way or another.

I think it's really interesting how people choose to sort characters though, because it's usually a good indicator or which character traits they think define a character, and usually you could make an argument for at least two, if not all houses with any given character. It's a fun discussion, but a stupid thing to wank over.

Also, whatever, Hufflepuff pride.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-22 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean and Cas are both definitely Hufflepuffs. Shit, Cas probably leans Slytherin a little bit.
