Though real answer? Some people WISH they could be those douchebags. They project their issues onto them, and see their ostriziation as the source of their attitude, when it's usually the other way around. So they find themselves wishing they could at least have that ability to "give some back" like they perceive these folks as doing.

Or they just find them attractive.

Can't comment on any of the depicted characters except Eridan, but he's a) thirteen and b) ugly (though he would probably be less so if he stopped scowling). I just like him because I think he's funny. And, let's be honest, I enjoy watching him suffer.

Every character gets obnoxious whiteknighting fans. That term doesn't mean anything tbh. It's confirmation bias, you hate a character so much any defense, whether it be sound or not,you're going to think "ugh, how can anyone defend this this character's fans are so obnoxious" but when it's your favorite it's a different story.

They tend to be the hot characters, and if fandom has taught us anything, it's that if you're a hot enough guy, the fanbase will let you get away with just about anything.

(only talking about Judal here, but) a combination of fine booty, amusing bratty villain antics, good foeyay, sass, so pretty when he's hurt, and that damn booty.

Because in some series the utter douchebags are the funniest characters in their interaction with others. Because sometimes the huge douchebags are interesting from a point of human psychology. Like, what makes this jackass tick. What made him into what he is now. How far can you push someone before they become unredeemable. Etc etc.

Also, for me personally, the kind of characters I dig in fiction are basically the opposite of the people I want to hang out in real life with. Meanwhile the kind of characters I would befriend if they were real tend not to draw my eye so much in fiction. It depends a bit on the type of canon, of course (like, the more unrealistic, the more I am drawn to the kind of personality types I can't stand in real life). I guess because it is a way of figuring out what makes these types tick without actually being confronted with the irritation in real life.

Eridan is mostly likely because he was 13 and not as much of a horrible person as he could have been given how Alterina trolls are raised and encouraged to act. And uh most of the trolls in homestuck are not the best of people. I'm also pretty sure a lot of us were little assholes at 13.

Also why did you pick Eridan and not Vriska and/or Dave?

Liking jerks is perfectly fine (a good amount of my favourites are pricks, but they're entertaining) as long as you don't continually justify their behavior; a good amount of Yosuke fans try to excuse his actions with "HE'S JUST IN THE CLOSET" but that really doesn't help my perception of him.

Can't speak on the other bottom characters.
And he doesn't even compare to Eridan: someone who killed two people and destroyed the only known way for his species to survive.

Personally I can't stand Eridan. (I'm pretty neutral on his looks. Karkat, Dave, Dirk, John, and Tavros are all much prettier.)

Also it's not like he really profited from his douchery (that I can recall, anyway). It's the "omg he's a total dick to me and kind of rapey too WELP, I LOVE HIM" that really gets me. Dry, that is. Gets me dry.
