I think it started out good, then inevitably slid downhill the further they got from Canon.

I love this show so much. For the quality, the content, the crazy-awesome wigs - and the shipping/squee potential. No reason is more important or more shallow than the other, as far as I'm concerned.

Star Trek Into Darkness, the next Hobbit movie, maybe Oz the Great and Powerful, and now that Quartet is playing in my city, I need to go see that soon.

Oh, I love Ten and Donna. They should've claimed to be siblings more often like they did in Fires of Pompeii, it would've been completely believable.

I think it's because some films/books/etc, instead of trying to get empathy from the reader, wants to force the reader to feel something and then you feel like you're a bad person if you didn't cry when you should have. So yes, it's not subtle and it's vindictive about it.

It's not the fact that it was manipulative that is generally the problem. It's that something seems transparently manipulative, and hence cheap and artificial and melodramatic. I don't really know how to explain it any better than that. At a certain level, when the way something is trying to manipulate you becomes too obvious, it takes away from your ability to immerse yourself in the work and actually be affected by it.

I mean, yes, all fictional entertainment is inherently manipulative. But part of the point is that we don't want to realize it's manipulative. Otherwise it somewhat loses its function, doesn't it?

Wonder Woman/Batman & Superman, when the writers aren't romantically pairing her with one of them (which never works, in my opinion).

Nooooo. Nope I'm ignoring this as canon(okay so I only caught bits and pieces of Medium but I always really loved their relationship and how adorkable he was).

I never knew Warden/Alistair had an annoying fanbase. Once upon a time I visited the BioWare forums and I read a bit of fic here and there, but...I guess I somehow avoided the worst of it. (I ship my dwarven Warden with Ali. :p)

Arthur/Eames from Inception is the only time I can remember growing to dislike a pairing I shipped.

But usually if I don't like a fandom I'll just stay away from it and that'll be that. *shrugs*

Yup, pretty much. The reverse has far too many depressing real-world instances.

I disagree, obviously, I think it's just a matter of deciding, yeah that's a bad idea, I'm not going to think THAT ever again, and moving on with your life.
