Places like 4chan and anon memes are full of trolling and general douchebaggery, but damned if I wouldn't find you a lot less aggravating if your comments were part of the general trollish masses rather than attributed.

I honestly wasn't trying to be a jerk! OK maybe my initial post was a bit harsh, but I apologized upthread for that. I certainly don't think it makes me any better or worse than anyone else (F!S highly disagrees it seems). And I didn't think it was that strange, thus easy enough for anyone to do it, but I guess not?

Thank you for asking this OP! I'm also in the market for more sci-fi and I just don't have the time/patience for 1000 page epics.

So, first off, everything everyone has said about Gibson. His short story collection, Burning Chrome, is excellent.

More short but great standalone sci-novels:

Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers. So. Freaking. Good. And tragically underrated because it was written in the USSR during the Cold War.

The Long Tomorrow by Leigh Brackett. A fascinating look at what people in the 1950s thought a post-apocalyptic society would look like. Very different from what gets written today.

Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon. A sci-fi classic that clocks in at less than 200 pages.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Much, much better than the movie, though the movie is also good.

Armor by John Steakley. A bit longer than 350, but you'd be fine just reading Part I (I'd almost recommend it in fact, though his fans might lynch me for the suggestion). Best action scenes of any sci-fi ever written, imo.

Then you've got to talk to your professor. There isn't anything kidish about knowing when a person/situation is bad for you and your health, and the people around you, and doing something about it. You could ask the professor to have him moved to another group or have him work solo. Obviously you're in a lose-lose situation no matter how you deal with him; better to talk to the professor and have him seething across the room or something than baiting you to your face.

Though, if you really feel you can't talk to your professor, is there any way you could have your interaction online? Or split into groups among your group so you don't have to deal with him every class, or at least all of each class? Hot potato him amongst yourselves. Split the tasks you need to do and rotate who has to work with him, maybe even give him something to do separately from the rest of you.

That's the problem with rumors is that even if they look right or get some things right that doesn't mean they are always reliable. Here's the problem with that rumor is that it came at the time around the start of season 3 and basically gave voice to all of the speculation that was running rampant at the time. People were calling alicorn twilight as soon as the special destiny thing was announced and twilight alicorn merchandise had been showing up, and the second part of the rumor has been proven to be false Hasbro has gone ahead with licensing derpy toys and merchandise well into 2013 as well as allowing her to return to the background for the season finale. That rumor while verbose only really states 2 things, one of which had been heavily discussed and hinted at previously and the other turned out to be false.

In the end, I'm sure Hasbro likes the idea of Twilight alicorn, but there is still nothing to prove that it was a unilateral decision on their part.

I always thought it was partly a matter of taste, like maybe Molly genuinely thought her sweaters were great.

Already mentioned: Tenth Doctor and Donna, Eowyn and Merry, Harry and Hermione (the dancing scene in Deathly Hallows makes me melt - not for romance, but because it's such an adorkable moment between two best friends).

Link and Navi in Ocarina of Time, although that's almost more familial.

My god, I haaaaate the first one, especially because it's always coupled with said child immediately loving and/or forgiving the parent for their absence. Like...dude. That's pretty much a perfect stranger, and you're getting emotionally attached to them just because they share some genetic material with you? Seriously?

Eh, I know she's attractive and all, but I'd prefer someone with more acting range and maybe someone less well known. Jolie's life tends to overshadow every role she's in, and she's pretty one dimensional.

I do apologize if I made it seem as though I was assuming everyone thought/felt this way, I don't and didn't, though I may not have made that clear. Though the wank (sorry Case) made it fairly clear that no one else does feel or think this way, and that I am several orders of magnitude of horrible or something.

The next time he tirades? I don't care if you're in class and the prof is talking, stand up, look at him and say, "I need to step outside. Please remember we're professional adults when I return." And walk the fuck out of the room.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is keeping you there. This is college. You don't need a hall pass. And if your professor gets upset with you, tell him/her that stepping away is for your health and so you don't lose it on him since you respect his/her class too much for that kind of drama.

And when he throws out random tangent questions? "That's not relevant, let's stick to the subject at hand."

And when he starts screaming at you because he's a child? In a calm voice, raise your hands and say, "We're all adults here, let's keep this on an adult level, please."

And you should talk to your professor. Tell him/her that you're paying for this class and he is making it difficult to learn anything and it's making you want to stop coming. I can't imagine you're excited about that class coming around every week.

In short, walk away when he's damaging you, but the rest of the time, stay professional and remind him that he's a fucking adult. Ugh. I do not understand why professors let poison like this infect their classrooms. This isn't high school anymore, dammit.

In the movie? Hell yes, I'm in total agreement. I was horrified that they watered down their relationship so much.

But in the book, I actually thought there was some good development. I really wish we could have seen more exploration of their relationship - I was completely heartbroken when they died. I guess that's what fanfiction is for.

I'd be a hell of a lot harder for you to follow around, that's for sure.

Yeah, BioWare reeeeallly liked to push Liara throughout the series. But from what I hear Liara and Shepard's ME3 scenes aren't much different between romanced and non-romanced (except before Cronos Station of course), though that may have been a bug and I dunno if they ever fixed it?

Don't forget, they did have their OOC makeout session in the middle of the hospital! :D I wish there was more to Thane's death scene for romanced Shepard and... a chance to get Paramour with him. And then he died and no one acknowledged it. Instead I get back to the Normandy and Garrus is just saying no more names went on the memorial wall. Um, EXCUSE ME

(Edit: Also: I like that he took on Kai Leng despite being near death. I DON'T like that Shepard and co. JUST STOOD AROUND. And took off while Thane was crippled even further. What the fuck.)

That.. bothered me from what I saw of the Kaidan romance. Yet if a dudeShep romances Ashley in ME1 and then someone else in 2, he at least got to tell Ash 'well you walked away on Horizon.' WHY COULDN'T FEMSHEPS SAY THAT TO KAIDAN.
