That episode pissed me off for so many reasons. TBBT, for me, is usually a mix of funny and eye rolling stupid, but that episode had no funny. So poorly done.

...I'd almost agree with you, but Howard doing some kind of shirtless invisible horse-riding cracked me up pretty bad.

MTE, I now only watch TBBT because I'm apparently trapped in a state of inertia where I can't stop watching BUT at least there is still something funny here and there. Not in this trainwreck of an episode.

I don't see why they should get so much crap for wanting to dress up as Disney Princesses. The guys dressed up as the cast of Star Trek: TNG this season and no one called them hypocrits (sic) or traitors to their gender.

Next time, OP, sacrifice the curly font for some readability, kay?

Re: Transcription

The curly font didn't help, but what made it illegible for me was the dark letters over bits of dark background.

This episode was kinda blah, but in regards to this post in general I do get tired of so called feminists telling me that I can be anything I want to be despite my gender except if it's a princess. It's not wrong to want to be a princess or even dress like one for a day, you just shouldn't do it because someone else wants you to or just because you're a girl.

This!

I don't watch this show but they look really lovely in their costumes, too. This is a super cute picture.

This.

And also, I know fairy princesses don't 'do much' but real princesses had to learn to be fucking queen and then had to be fucking rulers. if you don't think that they had to be smart and hardass to get through their days, then you are fucking wrong.

I have a lot of problems with how women are portrayed on that show (specifically the lack of geek girls) but the girls wanting to do princess cosplay didn't bother me at all. I thought it was kind of adorable.

I don't watch this show, but if you judge a woman (or girl) negatively because she wants to dress as a Disney princess, you're a shitty feminist.

I cosplayed Rapunzel last year, and it was so exciting to me. I never got an awesome fancy princess costume as a kid (Disney wasn't really making them yet, and my mom didn't really sew), so it was sort of like a delayed dream come true. And now I've also cosplayed Merida and I plan on doing Mulan, Jane Porter, Esmeralda, and Belle. And you know what? It feels awesome.

I only caught some of this episode on TV and I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. It was actually pretty adorable!

Besides, as a comedy, I don't think a lot of things on there should be taken terribly seriously.

Did you read the actress on the right's rant about the whole thing? It was kind of hilarious considering she's on that show.

But for the record I have no problem with the princess thing, I love princesses, I do have a problem when it is considered the one option for girls, but as ONE of the options it's fine.

But dressing as princesses is the LEAST of the problems on that show in terms of offensiveness.

I actually liked that - mostly because I was the first in line to get my Disney Princess crown when I got to Disney World. However, I'm with Penny - Disney parks are far more fun drunk.

Honestly, the thing that bothered me most about the episode was the fact that they wouldn't be allowed to dress up in the parks like that (the Halloween Parties being the exception). Adults aren't allowed to dress up so as to avoid confusing kids as to who are the official characters, or something like that. I don't remember the official verbage. But then I've worked in the parks so most people probably don't realize that.

I have nothing against the fact they dressed up. I thought they were adorable! Hell, I'd dress up like a princess at Disney if I could!

Didn't see that episode but if you want to Disney-Princessify yourself, here's a nice dollmaker game for it:

People were hating on that?? Did they...miss the point?? I thought that was surprisingly shrewd, especially for that show, the way they were kinda deconstructing the whole 'good feminist' idea. Like, yeah, there should be more focus on women in science (and if Sheldon of all people realizes it, you know that shit is obvious) and those two are very intelligent and accomplished, and they're also girls who like to have harmless 'girly' fun sometimes, and one doesn't cancel out the other, and it's perfectly okay to be one or the other or both. I was actually really impressed with that bit.

Seeing that picture is making me want to find the "Blossom" theme song. I'm still not over learning that's Blossom Russo ~<3

Regarding the princess thing, I agree with the majority of posters and the general idea that there's nothing wrong with dressing up like a princess. Now that it's not the only available option or the "expected" choice for girls, I don't see how it's any different from dressing up as a prince or a millionaire or a movie star- you're pretending to be someone who has a lot of money and power and wears fancy clothes and gets to boss people around.

While I think there is a lot of great criticism about Disney Princess culture, I just....don't really agree with it.

Because I LOVED Disney princesses when I was a kid. My favorite movie was Sleeping Beauty, and I watched the shit out of it. I still love that, and countless other old school disney movies. I frequently dressed up as different variations of the theme.

But I also watched a shit ton of Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and Mighty Ducks as a kid, and grew up to be a feminist, who wants to be married in a big fucking ball gown, because I love large, crazy dresses.

I think you can love Disney Princesses, and still be a fucking bad ass feminist, because I am one.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? People had problems with that in this episode? I guess I was just too distracted at how much the "teehee, they were getting bullied it's so funnay" was pumped up again. Seriously, I don't like Howard, but to see it played for laughs -again- when a character falls back into the behaviour pattern of a bully victim even though it's been years ago and they are adults now - not cool.

Seriously? THAT'S the problem people had with the episode? I was more annoyed that it took so long for the guys to figure out that if they want to get girls interested in science, they should probably have female scientists talk to them.
