Soda Alternatives

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've recently decided to curb my soda drinking, but I've found that eating my meals with just plain water is a little lackluster. Any suggestions for alternatives? I tried juice but they're just so sweet and they never taste right with what I'm eating. Please no alcohol.

Coffee or tea?

When I stopped drinking soda, I just switched to green tea

There's ton of juices, though! What have you tried?

Milk's always an option; I'm partial to mixed with honey and vanilla.

Also try getting rid of all the soda in your house. The harder it is to access, the less you'll have.

Tea is the only thing I can think of.

I have about two sodas a week now, a cup of coffee every morning and the rest of the time I drink water. I like water, but occasionally I get bored of it too. *gonna watch this thread*

Re: Soda Alternatives

Maybe something like lemonade that isn't so sweet? Tea. Then there are those flavor things you add to water, I have no idea what they're called but they're liquid drops so you can add as much or little flavor as you want. You could try that and add less and less until you're more used to plain water.

Cordial? Or any kind of syrup you can mix with water to give it a flavour without it being too sweet.

Tea. Make it in a pitcher, don't add sweetener, keep it in the fridge. Green and peppermint are my favorites.

What kind of water are you drinking? I only ever drink water and I find there are different, distinct flavors to it depending on where it came from. Tap is usually metallic, cheap bottled is usually flavorless, Fiji water and Smartwater have the best flavors to me. If you're just starting to regularly drink water it might take time for your pallet to be sensitive enough to the different flavors it can have. Maybe you could try different kinds of water and see if you notice a difference or prefer one?

Carbonated water!

I drink skimmed milk or cranberry/currant juice (they aren't particularly sweet and you can dilute them with water).

Italian sodas, made with carbonated water and flavoured syrup. The brand I usually use is Torani (the kiwi syrup is delicious).

Tea! Tea with mint/lemon!

You can add water to juices until they hit just the right note. I really like to add a little fruit juice (peach and watermelon are my favorites) to home-brewed tea instead of a sweetener.

You can also make lemonade at home to your taste. Which is also lovely in tea. I also like to swap out some of the sugar for some juice (usually from blackberries or watermelon) and toss a couple of crushed mint leaves in overnight.

Iced tea is probably the way to go. You can sweeten it a bit and add some mint or lemon for more flavor oomph.

aguas frescas!

they're basically freshly made fruit juice watered down with a lot of water, and sometimes with a little sugar too, depending on the fruit

so it does have flavor unlike plain water but it won't be as strong/sweet as plain juice

see if you can get something to make juice with (an extractor, one of those thingies to squash lemons/oranges/etc. whose name escapes me, etc.), if there are cheap/readily available fruits where you live

Another vote for milk. It goes well with most foods and is one of the few sources of calcium and vitamins A and D that your body won't reject.

Tea and coffee don't really go well with most foods and the amount of caffeine in them is really bad for you.

Easy. Drink pop instead.

I'm fond of teas, and iced as well. Coffee, milk (almond and soy), and lemonade are also pretty awesome depending on what you're pairing with your meals.

Tea, but be careful

(Anonymous) 2013-03-12 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
If you were a big soda drinker and you switch to being a big tea drinker, some teas--specifically black tea--can have negative health effects in high doses.

For example, I don't eat a lot of red meat but I drink a lot of black tea, and the result is that my hemoglobin levels were dangerously low for a few months. So...watch out for those things.

Have you tried vitamin water? Also I've had a friend serve me a glass of water that was pretty good. She filled the pitcher with water and a bit of ice, then she added slices of cucumber, lemon wedges and mint leaves to the pitcher.

I switched to tea and club soda, and after about a month, I got so I couldn't stand most HFCS sodas. I might try a cane sugar soda if I see one available on the menu. There are appliances you can get that carbonate your own soda water.

Some of those vitamin/flavored water brands are carbonated and might quench your thirst! I'm particularly thinking of a brand called ICE. Very flavorful, but still 0 calorie.

You could flavor your water with something like Mio or Crystal Light (you can add as much or as little as you like), but those tend to have artificial sweetners and I know some people really don't care for the taste. Alternatively, you could squeeze a bit of fresh lemon or lime into your water, put some mint in it, or even a teaspoon of cinnamon sugar.

We are lucky to have mint (spearmint) growing right outside our front door, so I slice up a lemon, get a sprig of mint and bruise it a bit, and put the mint and a lemon-slice in a tall glass of water. Gives you some flavor without being overwhelming, and it's aromatic and refreshing. You could do limes or oranges if you liked, or other kinds of mints (wintergreen, peppermint, there's a ton of them).

I find that the colder the water is, the better it tastes no matter what.

Personally I mix juice with soda water or mineral water - I was also finding juices too sweet, so watering them down with soda water makes them less intense. It also makes the juice nice and bubbly, so it's more refreshing. :D

The lemon you can put in tea, just put it in water and you got flavour and it is still pretty healthy.
