Tennant seems like a nice man, but it troubled me that he didn't seem to feel he was doing proper emotional acting unless you could see all the way up his nose.

I really don't think RTD wanted people to hate Eleven, but he was very much happy and proud of a character he created, and wanted to give him a big send-off. Should he maybe have kept that pride in check? Well, yeah.

But I'm pretty sure Moffat is going to send 11 off in a really spectacular way, too, and I hope you don't hold it against the character.

I liked Ten a lot, but sometimes I felt like Davies unintentionally wrote some serious flaws into his character, and sometimes genocidal maniacs and kid-friendly no-violence actions don't really mesh.

He seems cool in gif sets and what not, but for some reason, I just cannot get into his Doctor, so I feel you OP. :)

Ten's personally got on my nerves so damn often that I wasn't sorry to see him go like I had been Nine. Nine's still my favorite because he was my first Doctor though and Eleven is a very close second because I just adore him. Ten may not be my favorite Doctor but I there are episodes with him that I really liked - most of them being during Donna's run.

For me, the way 10 went out made me love 11 more. I liked Ten in S2 and parts of S4, but it seemed the writers were trying their best to make him damn unlikeable in the last two specials.

Yeah, I hear ya, OP. I'd really like to enjoy Ten more too, and there are some points through his era where I really did love Ten. However- overall I've got weird personal issues with his particular incarnation- like how I find him too manic, and very loud. (It's a weird sensory thing with me- IDEK).

Although- as for the ending- I really don't think RTD wanted Ten fans to hate Eleven. IMO- though it did feel very... opera-ish and slightly melodramatic (even if Ten was the 'most human' incarnation- and probably scared of death).

lol. I don't think that the way he went out was designed to make you hate Eleven.

Was it a self-indulgent good-bye? Yes.

But I don't think that means that RTD was trying to make us hate Eleven.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If you dislike 10 okay, but your opinions seem to be wrapped in "what fandom cares about" and the first rule of fandom is to not care what fandom thinks. Seriously, fandom just tends to make watching things more painful.

And the exit was not at all meant to make you hate 11, I don't know where you got that.

I've loved Nine, Ten and Eleven - mostly Nine, though, and I'm really happy to see some more Nine love! People tend to forget him, and he's my favourite. :(

Though, the only Doctor whose performance I've had even a little problem with at any time was Eleven, and that was because I can see bits of Ten in him. I got used to that, but at first, it really got on my nerves... I think I was ready to move on from Ten in the end.

It's a shame you can't move past this to properly enjoy his series, OP. I have the same with any character Daniel Craig plays, which sours my enjoyment of the Bond films, annoyingly. :(

"Meant to make his fans hate Eleven"? Really? If RTD wasn't such a...well...completely fucking nonsensical human being, I'd have automatically assumed he did that ending to purposely make everyone be happy that Eleven was finally here after how miserable Ten was in the specials.

I sympathize with the "I can't like him because I loved Nine so much" sentiment though -- I remember purposely putting off watching Eleven for quite a while because I was afraid that my view of him would be unfairly warped by how much I loved Ten. This was a good idea, because I instead went on a massive Classic Who binge of every era until I loved every single Doctor so much that by the end, the concept of negatively or positively comparing different regenerations seemed lolarious to me (though Nine will always occupy a special place in my heart, being my first ;))

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ten is my favourite of the three New Who Doctors, but I get why people don't like him. His hyper is so hyper, and his angsty is so angsty, and while I love him because of it, I can see why it's a turn off to some people.

And, unlike some of the other people here, I absolutely see what you mean about Ten's regeneration making people hate Eleven. I don't think RTD did it on purpose- he wanted a grand finale for both himself and Tennant. Killing off the character brutally was a good way to do it, but making regeneration=death instead of regeneration=rebirth/renewal was a pretty tough situation to leave Moffat with. I think Moffat handled it quite well, and I loved series five, but, for me at least, it actually took watching several of the Classic Who Doctors and their regenerations to become okay with regeneration again.

I love Nine but I've never found myself hating the others cuz people ignore him. In fact, it only endears him to me more. It's strange. His attitude is so different from the others.

I really love Ten. I think he's fun and interesting in his humanity. And I like Eleven, though I think I would like him more if he had a child companion because I've always felt that being the 'imaginary friend' Doctor to an actual child instead of a woman who was trying to relieve childhood that was super screwed up would work better with his personality.

I like them all on their own merits, regardless of what fandom thinks. As someone upthread said, 'the first rule of fandom is to ignore what fandom thinks.'

(Anonymous) 2013-03-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I absolutely love Nine. I don't mind if people don't like him (to each their own) but he really is special to me.

I think you might be taking something the wrong way...

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought that Nine was less talked-about in fandom because his season had the fewest things to complain about. Nice tight character arc, nice appropriate ending, no meandering detours or weird authorial whims getting in the way of his character development between Rose and Parting of the Ways. Unlike Ten. And even more unlike Eleven. The reason people talk about Ten and Eleven so much more than Nine isn't because they don't like Nine, it's because they can't really think of anything to complain about Nine. Just not enough fuck-ups, and not enough material in which to fuck up.

That being said, I don't get how people can just skip over Nine's season to get to Ten. It informs Ten's seasons and Ten's character and Rose's character so heavily. Hell, I don't get how people can even skip to the Moffat era without watching at least "Dalek" and "Bad Wolf"/"Parting of the Ways".

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh c'mon, that's just as silly as the RTD fans who don't like Eleven just because of the deluge of stupid boot-licking Moffat-fans his run picked up, even though they'd otherwise like him as a character. Broad popularity isn't an attack on your own preferences. If you like Nine best, well, nothing's stopping you. Just roll your eyes at the people who skip over him and jump to Ten. They don't know what they're missing. Don't feel insecure about your opinions just because they're not the most popular opinion.

The only times I wish I liked Ten more is when people who hear I like DW assume that I must therefore LOVE TEN HE'S SO CUTE HE'S SO GREAT HE'S SO AWESOME I STILL MISS HIM, RIGHT?!

And I'm just like, eh. I don't find him attractive, I only really enjoy his character when he's with Donna, and I was very, very glad to see the back of him.

Because I mean, on the internet, it's actually really easy to find people who don't like Ten, or at least don't LOVE him, and those who love Nine. But in the real world...not so much. IDK.

Are you my sister? She just got into Doctor Who this week and she sent me a text telling me she doesn't like 10 as much as she liked 9.

But hey, OP, I like 9 too.

I believe that you have to take each Doctor on his own terms. My limited knowledge not withstanding, I have particular Doctors that I prefer, and particular Doctors that just don't do it for me. But given the nature of the series and the character, I separate each from those who came before him.

There's nothing odd to me about not liking ten. There is something odd to me, however, about not liking ten because of nine and/or eleven.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I only ever really liked Nine, to be honest.

I do like Tennant and I hope I grow to like him more (still early in his part of the series), but the idea that anyone would skip Eccleston just to get to him saddens me. =(

Thank you! I absolutely don't understand why people fap off to the 10th and 11th Doctor so much, Jesus Fucking Christ. I loved the 9th Doctor so much! I felt Rose and him were so much more compatible with each other.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Nine is my absolute favorite forever. That is all.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
my problem with Ten (and Tennant) was that 'I could never buy him as old. Maybe the character was just in midlife crisis age denial (700-odd years old my ass, he's a thousand if he's a day) but even young-looking Doctors like Eleven or Five had plenty of moments when they seemed old and wise, something in the eyes, that offset for me any childishness 'cause it was like they earned it. Ten's tantrums and such only irritated me because they didn't feel properly balanced out.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-14 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think a combination of Tennants OTT acting and the writing made Ten pretty unbearable to me. I wasn't sorry to see him go. But I just think there's something about RTD's shows/ writing that tends to lend itself to OTT acting even from usually reliable actors. I remember being irritated by DT's character in RTD's version of Cassanova too. I thought he was decent in Hamlet and I thought he was good in Single Father.
