I don't see much slut-shaming of her (though I'm sure it exists), what I come across more often is people criticizing her for needing to be in a relationship, promoting the idea that women need to have a boyfriend to be happy and fulfilled. I have to admit the revolving door of boyfriends is pretty ridiculous, it has nothing to do with sex IMO, she just comes off as clingy and immature and like she can't exist as an individual without being in a relationship. It's annoying but I suppose on some level I can't hate her for a personal failing like that, any more than I can hate someone for being an alcoholic or having some other personality flaw or something

As an aside, her music is fucking awful and the whole story of her rise to fame is hilarious (her parents are filthy rich; one is a hedge fund manager and the other is a banker, something like that, in any case they are both Wall Street people). The Wikipedia page on her is one of the funniest things I've ever read, it's like the most boring typical teenage girl in the universe decided one day that they wanted to be a singer/songwriter on a whim and it happened only because her family is richer than God and pulled the strings to put her there.

Taylor Swift makes really, really good pop music. You can say that the sentiments of the lyrics are pretty laughable (and they are) and that it's not "authentic" country (and it's not) but from a pop perspective, she (and her producers) make amazing songs.

And in regards to her public persona, yes, the whole small-town rise-from-obscurity thing is a put-on, but that's precisely what's so fascinating about Taylor Swift - the extent to which her persona is created, and the glimpses we see of what's behind it - because it really seems like she is just an insanely driven, ambitious person who's creating this image very intentionally to rise to the top, and the tension between those things is fascinating to me. But regardless, I don't think her persona has any influence on whether or not her songs are good.

Except that there are plenty of REAL small town nobodies who aspire to rise from obscurity and that doesn't happen anymore, in a music industry where you already have to be filthy rich or have a mommy or daddy in the recording industry to get anywhere. I don't really see how that's fascinating aside from being, like I said, laughable and awful

I miss the days when someone like Dolly Parton could become successful off their singing/songwriting ability (Swift isn't good at either by the way) despite coming from extremely modest means. That's basically the American dream -- working hard and developing a talent and becoming successful based on your own merits. Taylor Swift is pretty much the opposite of that and that's why I can't stand her.

I'm not saying she's a good person, and her prominence is certainly a result of a cultural / economic landscape that is in many ways deeply fucked up. But that's exactly what makes her so interesting as a pop figure - because she has figured out how to work the system so well, and because of what that indicates about what pop music is right now, and because it's interesting to see a person with what seems like such a stark divide between how they present themselves and who they are. I wouldn't want to be her, but she's interesting in the same way that people of massive ambition and talent often are.

And, again, besides anything else, she makes good pop music that I like to listen to, and on some level I'm still going to enjoy that pop music regardless of her persona.

It's all very clearly subjective, because I don't find anything about her fascinating at all, unless it's the extent of her lack of talent when required to do anything beyond her inane brand of tripe. (Go track down the live performance she did with Stevie Nicks. It was so atrocious that some of my friends who don't know who Swift is remember it.)

So talent, no. Not at all (which may be why she's still doing high school girly break up love songs - they aren't musically challenging at all). And I wouldn't call her drive "ambition", I'd call it "narcissism".

Then again, there are stars and music I enjoy that others wouldn't, so whatever flips your switch.

ps just to clarify i mention Crawford cause she's somebody who worked very hard to craft a marketable image for herself like swift - except she actually came from nothing and was selfmade

YMMV, her songs are pretty generic. They don't bring anything to the table that we couldn't have gotten from the majority of the other female pop acts out there. It's pretty par for the course for teenage girl songwriting, and it would've been nice to get it from somebody more talented who didn't have parents rich enough to buy them a singing career for their birthday.

lol, please. her voice is weak. even with her incredibly easy to sing songs, and the existence of autotune, her voice sounds noticeably weaker than p much any other female singer played on the same radio stations as her. pink, for example, is also shit at singing live, but her producers recently have done a much better job of hiding it than swifts. same with katy perry. girl cant sing but aside from not telling her to knock off the vibratto, they do a good job of hiding it. lyrics are basic, songs are basic, built entirely on one unoriginal guitar bit. there is nothing new or innovative being done. i am not a big fan of pop but i can list a lot of other pop singers who do sometimes have unique elements in their songs. what exactly are her producers doing that is so special or great? she has maybe one or two recent songs that are cleanly produced, at least, but frankly a lot of her songs are a grating mess. i would take pink, lady gaga, or even katy Perry's producers before I'd take swifts. Perrys producer maybe incredibly repetitive and uninspired but for formulaic pop that sells well, its consistently done more professionally than swifts is

You're kidding right? I just had the (mis)fortune of hearing We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together for the first time today, thanks to the shit music taste of whoever controls the radio at work.

When people mock her habit of changing boyfriends more frequently than she changes her shoes, I don't get that people are calling her a slut so much as calling her flighty, fickle, immature, and more than a little vapid.

Perhaps I don't hang out on the right (wrong?) corners of the internet, but I don't see people calling her a slut. It's definitely a label thrown around generously on most women in the public eye, but legit Taylor just doesn't seem to have been one of them-- if anything, she's far more likely to get "prude" or "hypocrite." Not saying it's great, but I feel like the hype about her being slut shamed is wayyyy overdone. I don't like her because she's a terrible singer who coasts on autotuned albums and likes to call out other women and disclaim feminism because she's ~beyond that~ without ever acknowledging the incredible privilege that allows her to make such statements.
