National pride?

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-03-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Just curious here.

What is your nationality and are you proud of being that nationality? And if not, why then? As well as what would you rather be and why?

I'm an American, I'm over being a flag-waver, but I like it enough here. I've thought of moving to Canada, however -- like, Vancouver most likely. Only thing stopping me is they don't have a comprehensive disabilities protection law like the US does.

American.

Yes, in a sense. There's a certain aspirational concept of America that I am immensely proud of, principles that are linked to my understanding of what America can be, and there's a lot of folk history and culture that I'm proud of as well. At the same time, it's pretty obvious that America hasn't always lived up to those principles, and that's shameful and anger-inducing, and I'm certainly not going to defend any of that terrible, shameful shit. It's a story of two Americas, I guess, and I feel in myself that I have an allegiance to one of them, as long as some trace of it exists. Anyway, I couldn't imagine being a citizen of anywhere else in any real sense.

Does that make sense? I don't know. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of people yelling at me. But it's honestly the way I feel.

Canadian, and reasonably proud of it I guess? Although something I was reading on Cracked the other day made me wish I was Finnish for a bit. The education system sounds so fantastic and I had to go through so much crap with my schooling and still am and ugh.

But yeah, 99% of the time I'm happy with where I am. The most I usually wish is to live in a different city or province sometimes.

Norwegian* and yes, yes I am proud of my country, of all the things we have accomplished in a relatively short period of time. Off course I'm not blind to our faults, but overall Norway as a country is doing pretty well.

I wouldn't want to be any other nationality, even if my friends jokingly tell me that I'm really British. Something about drinking tea and not liking coffee (fun fact: Norway is one of the countries in the world that consumes the largest amount of coffee per person).

*like I don't mention it pretty much every day...

U.S. citizen, and no; my country's done too much bad stuff and it's not like I'm responsible for any of the good stuff. That said, there's also no nationality I'd rather be; every other nation has also done a lot of bad stuff.

Re: National pride?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-03-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
American. Yes and no. I don't really get being proud of a nationality unless you've contributed to the community and are proud of your collective accomplishments or something. Not just because you were born behind a border.

But I'm an idealist who can't stop thinking like a realist? So I'm proud of being an American in a hopeful, abstract kind of way. We've had some good moments.

I'd rather be a Yilane.

Filipino.

I'm okay with it, I guess. I feel like I don't exactly fit in culturally. My stepdad was American and I had a mix of American and Filipino upbringing so I'm kinda somewhere in the middle? I think there are a ton of flaws in Filipino culture that needs to be addressed (rape culture and victim blaming is very prevalent, polychronic attitude, passing the buck is the MO, very corrupt government). At the same time, I feel like I don't completely fit in America either, and I've been living here for years. Some things I just don't get or I think "that's completely unacceptable" because of my Filipino background. Idk.

Norwegian. I can't say I have any pride, though I'm happy I was lucky enough to be born in a safe and developed country. We are far ahead of most of the world, which both good and depressing.
It does have a sense of "home " though. I currently live in England, and I can't imagine living here for all my life even though I like it.

I get a bit of indirect embarrassment at the national pride people get whenever we get any international recognition. Did you know a Norwegian movie was nominated for an Oscar this year???? well all of Norway did.

Re: National pride?

Australian and...idk if I'd say I'm proud, maybe? it depends on what we're talking about? I mean I like it here and there's nowhere else I'd rather live (I'm sure that'd be different if I was born elsewhere) on the otherhand, like most other countries it still needs to work things out.

Re: National pride?

A Russian-speaking Estonian Jew (as in "Jew by blood", not by religion), and I'm not proud, I'm really fucked up.

I suspect that I'd like to not identify with any of my nationalities, just be a world citizen, but it's absolutely impossible due to the Russian elements of my upbringing and Russian community in Estonia being super isolated. They sometimes remind me of the Whites.

Also I'm scared of the concept of "national pride". It sounds as if you're accepting responsibility for a huge group of people you don't even know. I'm not ready to do that, never, which doesn't mean that there aren't particular "Russian" or "Estonian" or "Jewish" things I like; there are.

Re: National pride?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-18 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
American and no. This country is ridiculously backwards. While I'm thankful I wasn't born anywhere worse, I'm also sad and disappointed that this country isn't doing better when it has the capability to do so.

I don't know where else I'd move, though. Canada's just a stone's throw away, but I've heard some not-so-good things are going on in the government there, as well.

American and I never think I'm proud until I come across people making fun of us and then I'm mad. So I guess instead of proud I would go with defensive. XD

But I wouldn't want to be anything else. I kind of like it here. ;3;

I'm Chilean, and it's something I've said before here, since some stuff on the comm takes me by surprise due to cultural differences. I like the natural beauty of my country, the veggies/fruits, the fact Santiago (the capital) is kinda on the safe side when it comes to Latin American cities, Mapuches, and Allende's government.

Everything else is an utter disaster. And I really, really distrust nationalism, nothing good ever comes from that. Chileans are nice to foreigners when they're white, not as nice when they're asian, and utterly nasty when they are other Latin Americans. Peruvian immigrants have it specially hard here and our relationships with Bolivia are in a constant tight rope.

Argentinean.

Not really, I guess I like it here and I'm used to it but wouldn't mind being from somewhere else.
I hate how arrogant people here are, and how they want to be the "best" at everything... and now we have a Pope, and people celebrating like idiots. Sigh.

Oh, and I believe the Malvinas/Falklands Islands are British :D (no, I don't say that out loud often)

I'm Canadian, and I'm proud of it. I try to challenge myself on that pride because I know plenty of the squeaky-clean Canadian image is bullshit, but it still sneaks through.
I would be okay with being american, but don't tell anyone.

American here. There are some things I like, but a lot that I would like to fix. And there are a lot of times I look enviously at things that other countries can get accomplished, like health care and gay marriage, especially when I look at yet another strike against women's rights or something here.

American. I used to be pretty proud of it, but it's pretty mixed now. Some things we still do good, but I really don't like our culture anymore or our government much.

I despise the lack of universal health care and hate that our insurance companies will drop people who've been paying their premiums b/c they got sick (cancer, heart disease, etc.) so that they don't have to pay out for their customer's health care. I mean, wtf, dropping someone b/c they didn't "report" they had bad acne that required treatment as a teenager b/c they didn't want to pay out for their cancer treatment...that's just disgusting, repellent, and I don't even have any words for how despicable I find that. Yet, people and politicians will fight to the death to deny universal health coverage.

For me the negatives are outweighing the positives right now. I'm still proud of being Texan w/our history and cowboy/western/southern culture (we're a mix; not truly southern or western really), but omg, I hate Rick Perry, and all the incredibly rude people moving here (go home, Yankees--if someone says hi, the response isn't to glare, it's to say hi back).

I do fantasize constantly about going expat and leaving the country. I just wish I could do it easier than I think I could. I'm looking into my options.

I am proud of it :) There are problems with Canada and where I live like all places in the world, but I have never been ashamed to admit it. In fact while travelling, saying I was Canadian was always an assist and made greetings warmer. Plus, I like lying stretching the truth to people who don't know anything about Canada and telling them I live in an igloo and have walked by polar bears on regular day to day basis.
