Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I work 8- and 9-hour shifts, which means I get two paid 15-minute breaks and an unpaid hour-long lunch. I was thinking, if I had the choice, I'd much rather have a 30-minute paid "lunch" and leave an hour early. Especially since I almost never get to take my breaks anyway.

What would you rather have, f!s?

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to work a job with a similar set up (though the lunch was 30 minutes) and when I worked graveyard shifts I would do exactly as you suggest. It wasn't technically allowed, but I preferred it. Unfortunately, it breaks the labour laws where I live and I'm generally in favour of labour laws so *shrug*

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, labor laws here mandate that workers get a lunch break before 5 hours into their shift, so it couldn't really be done here, but if I had the choice... Wish I could sign a waiver to that effect or something. If I'm only getting paid for 8 hours, I don't want to be stuck there for 9 :/

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The only time I didn't take my breaks was when my incompetence was the only reason I didn't have enough time. I would also tell off people I scheduled if they didn't take theirs. (I was probably really annoying. I have a lot of feelings about labour laws.)
But my workplace was unionized (even if it was a shit union) and I had the advantage of not really looking to advance there. That sucks you're not getting paid for your work :(

Well, in the great state of Arizona, it's not law to get a break or lunch! SO I often work 10 hour shifts, sometimes 12, and don't get a single break! Not even a minute! If I want to eat, I have to do so while there are no customers, and if it's busy all day, fuck that, eating isn't important!

Oh, ouch D: I didn't even know there were still states without mandated breaks. I am so sorry :(

My condolences. Everything I've heard about AZ convinces me there's some secret competition to see which state is the most awful, and that AZ is the odds-favorite.

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I work 8-10 hours a day and don't get any breaks so... getting a break at all would be nice! (This is, of course, totally illegal in Texas, but I'm not going to complain... it's better than having no job, and I could easily lose mine if I complain. Plus I'd rather get paid for all 10 hours rather than having to clock out for a break or lunch. I just eat a granola bar while peeing lol)

Re: Working Hours

Is it? I was discussing this point the other day saying it was mandated; the other person was saying it wasn't. I googled it and got the federal law, which doesn't require it: http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/workhours/breaks.htm "Federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks. However, when employers do offer short breaks (usually lasting about 5 to 20 minutes), federal law considers the breaks as compensable work hours that would be included in the sum of hours worked during the work week and considered in determining if overtime was worked. Unauthorized extensions of authorized work breaks need not be counted as hours worked when the employer has expressly and unambiguously communicated to the employee that the authorized break may only last for a specific length of time, that any extension of the break is contrary to the employer's rules, and any extension of the break will be punished.
Bona fide meal periods (typically lasting at least 30 minutes), serve a different purpose than coffee or snack breaks and, thus, are not work time and are not compensable."

Do you have cites for the state of TX?

The schedule you want is pretty much the schedule I have, except I still work 9 hour days four days a week, and then I have a short day on Friday. :)

I'd rather have the half hour lunch and leave early. I've only worked part-time jobs and my current job has really short shifts for various reasons, but when I had an hour lunch and the fifteen minute breaks I just never knew what to do during that hour. I worked at a mall, and after I was done eating I would read and walk around, but I'd rather have that shorter shift.

My last job but one I used to do 7½ hr shift with one 15-minute paid break. I managed to take the break about one day in four. Would so much rather have just gotten off 15 minutes earlier.

I've never had to think about it, when I've worked I have always had a 30 min lunch break, then again I've never worked more than 8 hours (or 7h30m of working I guess), because that is the law.

If you are interested in Norwegian labour laws continue reading, if not just ignore this and go on with your lives, I suggest you do the latter.

In Norway you can't by law* work more than 9 hours every 24 hours and/or 40* hours a week.

After working 5h30m, you have a right to at least 30 min paid break (if you can't leave work) 30 min unpaid if you can leave. If you work overtime you have a right to an additional 30 min of paid break.

*Exceptions are made for some jobs and also over a short amount of time. Overtime is also something that can only happen in extraordinary situations, if it is a regular thing they have to hire another worker.
*37,5 is the usual work week though.

Wow, I work about 60 hours in a week, I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I had to cut it to 40! :O

If you're unable to take your breaks you should really talk to a boss about it. You're entitled to them and it's a huge problem if work is preventing you from taking them.

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a huge deal, personally. I know it technically breaks labor laws, and if I was actually being prevented from taking my breaks, I'd say something, but mostly I just get caught up in work and don't really feel like telling my coworker, "Hey, I feel like taking my break. Watch the department for me while I go fuck around for 15 minutes!" On the upside, I don't feel bad about taking my time going to the bathroom or getting a drink or whatever, since I'm supposed to have that downtime anyway.

I live in the USA. Is it mandated for break times? I was discussing this point the other day saying it was mandated; the other person was saying it wasn't. I don't care what I do as long as I'm doing it after midnight.

I like having an hour lunch. 30 minutes is just not enough for me because it usually takes about 25 minutes for me to eat and I like to have some time for myself in the middle of the day

My work hours are 7:30 - 4:30 (I get up about 6am every morning which is a drag). I kinda wish it was more like 9:30 - 6:30 sometimes or even 10:30 - 7:30 because I am NOT a morning person

Oh and I have scheduled breaks so it's either take them or keep working. In my previous position I could take them whenever I wanted to so I usually just dicked around on the computer for like, 5 or ten minutes every few hours instead of taking a proper break.

When I worked a job that had breaks/lunch (current job is just sort of "work whenever you want to, stop working whenever you want to, keep a log of your hours"), I always just worked right through until halfway through my shift, then took one of my 15-minute breaks, then waited until the last two hours of my shift to take my unpaid lunch and the other 15 minute break.

The store managers hated it for some reason, even though that meant I was on the floor during the hours we were busy, and took most of my breaks when business was slowing down for the night. I really didn't get it. But I'm with you, I'd rather just get the work over with and leave.

Depends on the nature of the work. If it were anything involving being on my feet, I'd take all the breaks I could. If it were a desk job, I'd work in a longer block and get it all over with.

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I like your choice. I don't need much time to eat, so I spend most of my lunch hour wandering around, waiting to go back to work. And I would like to leave an hour earlier every day, indeed.

Re: Working Hours

(Anonymous) 2013-03-24 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'd want to leave an hour early as well, but at least you get an hour lunch even if it is unpaid. At some old jobs I'd have unpaid breaks and 30 minute lunches.

At my current job, if you work 8-9 hour shifts you get one 15 minute paid break and one 30 minute paid lunch. I work one of the 12 hour shifts so we get two 15 minute breaks and one 30 minute paid lunch. I like that.

I work 10 hour days, and end up being at work for 10.5 hours with a half-hour unpaid lunch and three paid breaks totaling ~45 minutes. I'd rather have a 20 minute paid lunch and only have to be there 10 hours.

I wouldn't know what I'd do with myself with an hour-long lunch, esp. given that my drive is a half-hour one way, so it's not like I could go home and dick around or anything.
