Re: op
Though I will say, there are quite a number of people in the fandom who do not actually watch the show. So... that could account for some of what you're seeing.
I've seen similar people in Sherlock and Doctor Who fandom.
I have to wonder if this is a sudden trend or if this kind of thing has always existed.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)Which actually doesn't make sense to me because just following slash ships around is weird to me, but each to their own i suppose.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:14 am (UTC)(link)Oh man if it's not canon i'll be so annoyed with the level the fanservice has taken. Even i believe it might be canon at this point, and i have never thought that before.
At least sterek has no canon basis, only cast and crew interaction that gives the ship merit.
I'm not sure which is worse lol.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:19 am (UTC)(link)Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:36 am (UTC)(link)Supernatural has (apparently) huge international viewership and a solid established audience with many many seasons to go into syndication internationally, there is no incentive for it to do something that would appear so crazy out of left field to the majority of viewers, particularly the dude-bros.
Teen Wolf is in the opposite situation. Obv they're not going to enact fanfic onscreen, but I can seem them going further with it than Supernatural for sure.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:46 am (UTC)(link)I predict it'll either happen soon, or it'll happen this time next year after it gets renewed for season 10. That way they get to pander to the fans a bit, but also if they don't get renewed they can say it wasn't because of the relationship.
But who knows. Teen wolf will defintely go further with the gay relationships on screen (it already has, really, although TW has Danny and SPN has Charlie...) but i don't know if Sterek is ever going to be one of those relationships. I see isaac/someone more likely but who knows. If they do do it, i hope they wait till season 4 or 5 at least
Re: op

Danny will be having a sex scene with one of the alpha twins.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)Harry/Draco, Dean/Sam, Dean/Cas, Arthur/Eames, Magneto and Picard from First Class, Sherlock/Watson, Tony/whoever, Derek/Stiles.
Probably some arbitrary ones thrown in there but that was always the general gist. And these people, if they were fic writers? Every single one was AU with a very, very fanon based caricature of the characters in their stories.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)I know i should just shut up and say let people ship what people want to ship, but these are the people that make it easy for people to say slash is fetishization of homosexual couples.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:39 am (UTC)(link)But even after so many people telling them that shipping a slash ship doesn't make you discriminated against, marginilaize, I still see posts ranting about some slight or other nearly every day on tumblr.
Today it was this:
"You may think you’re being cute, but you’re not. Sterek fans have said over and over and OVER again that what we see in Derek and Stiles is the potential for a really epic relationship. Their personalities and experiences make for a truly incredible mix that we want to watch happen. It’s not all about sex, so maybe bring your own mind out of the gutter, because for every PWP fanfic out there, there are tons more with amazing development and trust building.
As for the “slim chances” slight, you don’t know that. There is *nothing* but gender standing in the way of this relationship and I have faith that’s a hurdle that will be overcome.
The Sterek fandom is *far* from being just “young women.” This is a fandom of extreme diversity across ALL dimensions, including age and gender. This pairing has reached everyone.
Stop using stereotypes and demeaning slights to de-legitimize and stigmatize us. We won’t stand for it."

Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:49 am (UTC)(link)Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 01:52 am (UTC)(link)Yeah i agree with the rant, to an extent.
The reasons i ship sterek is because they have chemistry (they make these FACES at each other for goodness sake) but also because Stiles is super loyal, and someone that loyal is someone i could see Derek ending up with. PLUS someone who knows about hunters & werewolves. But also I'd like to see him trust a human again (i don't think he has much trust for humans)
So yay romance, but also just yay for some trust & friendship too.
Its really NOT about the sex for lots of people.
but then there are some where it clearly is so...

Picard. I am laughing way too hard at this even though I understand what you mean.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)Yes, I wonder that myself. I mean, I really can't imagine there being a large amount say... in the HP fandom? It seems like the main part people enjoyed was reading the books. Then again, I joined fandom in 2009 so I probably missed all the truly crazy of that one.
It seems so incredibly common on tumblr, anyway. I wonder if it's just so prevalent there because it's so image based? Nothing wrong with image based fandom, but it might also be encouraging a uncaring attitude toward thinking things out, other than rambly, one-sided inaccurate meta.
Re: op
Yeah, I noticed the tumblr connection too but I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to make it seem like I'm bashing tumblr. I know that I've seen this popular post on my dash a few times that said something like, "You know when you see so much of some ship on your dash that you start shipping them too even though you're not in the fandom?" So apparently it is a thing.
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 02:29 am (UTC)(link)"Migratory slash fans" have existed for as long as I've been around. People dispute the label, but there's no denying that for some people the community>>canon. The tumblr user who got me into Teen Wolf definitely doesn't give any fucks about canon.
Re: op
Huh, really? How long have you been around?
Re: op
(Anonymous) 2013-03-27 02:43 am (UTC)(link)I would be really curious if it predated LJ enabling a more interconnected fannish community. I can't see someone participating in a Yahoo Group for a show they have no real interest in, but maybe I'm just naive.
