Did I make this secret in my sleep? I reblogged essays or quotes about privilege until I made friends with a girl who pretty much embodied the privilege I talked about (affluent, pretty, healthy) and then I started to hesitate. I figured that if she did get offended, she isn't worth my time.

I see this all the damn time. Unfortunately, grammar isn't everyone's forte and no matter how many faces I make at my screen, SPaG errors will always exist.

Didn't the EMH say that more than McCoy ever did? And I'm sure I've heard Phlox say it at least once...

(Disclaimer: I haven't seen TOS or the movie. Have seen all of Voyager and am about 3/4 through Enterprise.)

ETA: EMH juuust wins out. Handy! Drat, 'engineer' has been used, better change it to mechanic...

Re: N!S 1

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the EMH probably said it more than McCoy did because he was in a lot more episodes of Trek. TOS only lasted 3 seasons, after all; EMH was in all 7 seasons of VOY.

But regardless of who said it more, it's indelibly associated with McCoy. It's his catchphrase, and the reason any other doctor says it is always, always, always as a reference to McCoy and the whole deal of doctors in Trek that he originated. No matter who says it, McCoy will always own that phrase.

Does that association lead fanfic writers to overuse it? Probably, yeah. But that's another indicator of how connected he is to it.

Oh, good point. I keep forgetting that TOS is a lot shorter.

But fair enough. Like I said, I haven't seen TOS, so the association jumps more to the EMH for me. (Doing Voyager fic for Camp NaNoWriMo, though, and I DO intend for him to use that line, so I'm probably not really helping there!)

OT

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OT but I just had to point out that I had no idea TOS was only three seasons long. It was on TV all the time when I was a kid (it was the only Trek show so far) and I've just sort of always thought/assumed it had run for ten years or more.

I'd rather that reblogged the stuff so I knew to unfollow you. Tumblr is a minefield of SJWs and it's better when you just admit what you are so the rest of us can stay away from you.

Has anyone else noticed that, of the complainers on FS, the ones who complain about SJWs are the least likely to be logged in when they complain? It seems a little cowardly--commenters who lean SJW are often proudly logged in, so why not meet them on their own terms?

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
One reason is that some people who are very anti-SJW have had bad experiences with angry mobs of SJWs storming their online location and terrorizing them, and don't want to stick their necks out again. Others have heard about said angry mobs, and don't want to stick their necks out at all.

However, I do sometimes wonder how many anons are responsible for the very short "lol SJW" type remarks. It's probably more than just one.

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2013-03-30 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe they don't want mobs of people from twitter or tumblr parachuting in to call them evil

not like that ever happens, wait, that totally happens, and it's completely reasonable not to want to worry about it

AYRT

I'm anon because I don't have or want a DW account. I used to use openID but there was a problem with it for a long time that meant having to go anon four out of five times, so I stopped doing that.

On tumblr (the platform actually in question), I'm very open about not wanting anything to do with SJWs. I prefer rational thought and reality over emotional idealism that is carefully crafted to disregard facts and rationale.

No. Fandom, including f!s, is already a mostly liberal space. And most of us here probably associate "SJW" with "slacktivist asshole," and the threads saying so are usually full of both anon and logged-in folk.

I used to de-anon and then got a bunch of hate mail from you SJWs because ya'll didn't like what I had to say about some stupid issue or other. So now I remain anon at all times because even innocent comments are taken the wrong way and I have no intention of having my inbox being flooded by all your rants. :D

This way I say whatever the hell I like without worrying about receiving threatening messages.

Re: NF

(Anonymous) 2013-03-31 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because they don't want people putting them on blacklists or stalking their posts to call them pieces of shit , or stalking their posts to tell people "omg they're a rape apologist" but not give ANY EVIDENCE when asked about it.

Yes I've seen this happen. SJ itself is a noble goal when done right and with a REASONABLE attitude. But SJWs they do it all wrong and give social justice a bad name. Which in my opinion means it's perfectly justified to call them out. I hate seeing people go "SJWs can be pains but they mean well/have good intentions so it's okay"

All that tells me about this community is that if someone wants to get away with terrible behavior all they have to do is hide behind a "good cause".

Yes I separate Social Justice and SJW. Social Justice is the good side, and SJW is the fucked up side.

N!S1:
You gotta drapes problem. All the houses you've been to have the same drapes and sometimes they really work with the house and sometimes they don't. However, the fact you see them so often just pisses you off so much it no longer matters if the drapes fit well in the house or not. Which, really, I know is frustrating but if they look nice in the house can you really blame them for using those drapes?

I hate myself for using that metaphor for so long. I also hate myself for not giving in and making a "drapes match the carpet" joke.

N!S2:
The first line of your secret really annoyed me and I was like, "WTF are you do- oh..." It really made your point. The thing is though, it's difficult for some people to remember that stuff. English is hard. They should probably get a beta but if it really annoys you maybe you could just nicely point it out to the author? They'd probably be appreciative if they're not an asshole.

Repeat:
You're cute.

Does anyone know when this secret was actually posted the first time? Was there epic wank? How did I miss it? Please tell me there was beautiful wank.
