This is sort of related to this secret, so I thought I'd try to bring up a discussion;

How do you think blogs like this one: http://shutupteenwolffans.tumblr.com/
effect the fandom mindset?

Personally, I've seen a lot of negativity come out of this blog. It's not even about showing the delusional people that they are off base, it's more about bullying them and mocking them. Which in no circumstance makes anyone(whether they are healthily minded about something or not) react without aggression.
I think that blog is getting better at getting crazy people going, then making people stop. It's convincing so many of them that they are being persecuted because the way this person hunts out their posts and puts them on blast over everything. I almost put the blog runner on the same level of sanity when in regards to Sterek. Just because they have an opposite negative view doesn't make it any better.

Something I'm a little confused on:

Is either Stiles or Derek a lead on that show?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, lol.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
So there are other characters? Like, characters that are more important to the plot?

I have thought that show was about Stiles and his werewolf boyfriend this whole time, and there were literally like 2 other characters (Stiles' dad and some girl who is awful and should die).

Fucking Tumblr.

:) Welcome to the Teen Wolf fandom. Enjoy your stay.
Fun fact: neither of them are even the Teen Wolf. They interact with each other a total of about 8 times between 2 seasons. 75% of those interactions are through the teen wolf, the actual main, Scott. Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Scott is the lead. Stiles is his best friend.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's a multi character show. The "teen wolf" is Scott, Stiles is his best friend, and Derek is the other main werewolf. Scott has scenes with everyone, Stiles and Derek rarely interact.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is actually mind blowing because I thought those two were main characters, like the Sam and Dean of the show based on all the talk about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's more of an ensemble cast, and they're both part of the 6 characters who get the most screen time. But Scott is the title character and Stiles' best friend.

Also, there are a lot of TW fans out there who blog a lot more than just Derek and Stiles stuff. The main TW tag just tends to get overrun with things pertaining to Stiles and Derek, and it's easy to miss the other stuff if you're not in the fandom. Especially with how much hype Sterek gets both inside and outside of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
IDK. I say this with all sincerity, I wonder if the reason my knee-jerk reaction to this blog is disdain is because it's a gay ship it's making fun of.

Like, if it were a blog mocking the Twihards for thinking Edward and Bela were the most super healthy romantic relationship ever, I'd be laughing. But because it's a gay ship, I think I'm a little more defensive on principle, even though from what I've heard, the ship is pretty icky and the fans are ridiculously ott (disclaimer: I've never seen the show).

In conclusion: The mocking makes me uncomfortable, but I think it's more that I subconsciously suspect it's either about ship wars or homophobia.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's homophobia. The person who runs this blog spends a good amount of time pointing out (rightfully, imo) how Sterek shippers tend to ignore the only canonically gay character on the show, Danny, in favourite of their white guy ship.
Which is one of my least favourite things that I have seen from Sterek fandom. That and the ignoring and mockery of the actual main character of the show, Scott. Oh hey look both Danny and Scott aren't white, woops.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I agree on some points the blog makes on Danny and Scott, but most of it is done in a really tasteless way. First of all, gay people aren't interchangeable. That's just a really gross thing about the "rebuttle" over Sterek shippers. Yes, I think it's gross that Sterek shippers completely ignore Danny, and some go beyond into anger over Danny getting attention(wtf?) but when people say "here, there is some gay in it for you!" like all anybody wants to see is an extremely minor character be used and manipulated by a gross, semmingly sociopathic villain.

I think it is bullshit that so many say things like "We want A RELATIONSHIP!!" because, just be honest, you love the sex aspect. And it's also not even shameful to enjoy the sex aspect. I don't see what's wrong with that.

But a lot of what this blog says does come across homophobic. They make the points about Danny because they know it will gain them support from fellow anti-Sterek people. But they never really back that up with interest. A true method to promoting sane behavior when it comes to gay characters would be to get enthusiasm over Danny, make posts about him, dedicate a blog to him, make art for him.

Not use him as an ending point over why Sterek is disgusting and all these people are insane.

da

the things you are taking issue with like but when people say "here, there is some gay in it for you!" like all anybody wants to see is an extremely minor character be used and manipulated by a gross, semmingly sociopathic villain. - this blog does not do that. I don't understand what you are referring to here? we seem to be in agreement that it's sensible to point out the extent to which sterek fans calling for ~representation ignore the actual queer character.

I really hate the 'oh if you really cared you'd promote X instead of tearing down Y!' argument because saying that misses the point of how fandom operates a lot of the time & feels like derailing. Most times you can't effectively promote X because of how Y dominates. Of course there are people trying dedicate to Danny, to promote him, to get Jeff to develop him, but they are thwarted by the straight white slash ship. That's when you make a blog exposing that. He is an example of how disgusting sterek shippers can get. That's not homophobia.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe. I don't know if you watch glee (don't) but there's a queer girl couple that's got major problems that I wish less people would glorify, but at the same time I cut them some slack since a couple like that is so much harder to come by. So I get you.
But even though I do it myself I think it's a bad practice to let a queer ship get away with more because it's queer.

But uh yea the ship and the fans are pretty icky. You will actually find more homophobia within it than against it.

Idk about the Teen Wolf fandom since I'm not in, but I follow those kinds of blogs for the Sherlock and Supernatural fandom, and I think the former, especially, is keeping a pretty sensible mind about it. The mod makes it clear that they only refer to a certain part of the fandom. They're also pretty sensible, and I know it's helped some people to tune down the crazy once they realised just how unacceptable their behaviour was. So I'd say if we're talking about blogs, it depends on who's running the blog and what fandom it is, but done right, it helps the crazy sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, what blogs are those? Mind linking? Sound interesting.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've been following that blog a while, and you know what? They do try to convo with people sometimes but I don't blame them for getting mocky. Why? Because a lot of the people that get blasted on there a) don't care/don't listen if you try to reason with them b) are getting blasted for being racist/homophobic/sexist and therefore deserve it. I really don't see how the blog runner compares to that. It's less about 'ugh sterek shippers you are delusional' and more 'you are offensive as fuck while doing so' tbh, you sound like you are one of those who felt unfairly persecuted.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think the blog is honestly mostly a venting tool. I don't know who runs it, but sometimes people who point out when people in the fandom (and especially Sterek shippers) are being delusional get jumped on. I think that blog is more so things can be pointed out without anyone's personal tumblr getting their askbox flooded. Some of the things that Teen Wolf fans say is side-eye worthy and it deserves to be pointed out.

OTOH, I think whoever runs the blog gets a bit lost in their own hubris and carried away at times, too. Pretty sure they deleted the post from their blog, but they reblogged a post by a fan saying they were excited about the news that Stiles and Derek were going to be allies in the upcoming season assuming that the person thought allies = fucking. Their reply was pretty damn condescending. Some of the more zealous Sterek fans can be seriously delusional, but I think that some of the anti-Sterek people have a tendency to read things into comments about the couple because they want to assume all Sterek fans are The Worst.

Personally, I wish both sides would take a chill pill.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like it. I thought I would because I agree with them on pretty much everything, but they're so vicious and even though it claims to be about "certain" shippers, it doesn't seem to differentiate between the more rabid illogical ones and people who treat it like a cracky/fun ship.
Just because they have an opposite negative view doesn't make it any better. --> IAWTC

IMO the best way to run a blog like that, if you really feel the need to vent, is just to reblog the worst offenders and let them stand for themselves. I like the tumblr.txt or reddit.txt twitter accounts for this reason. If you need to start speculating about how stupid the fandom reaction will be in order to properly mock it you're just a bully.

*reads more* actually, I take it all back! Any blog that posts shit like this-
"Because the majority of shippers are young women who don’t understand the dynamics of male-to-male relationships. They still harbor homophobic-based ideas that two men cannot be in a platonic relationship without being in love or being gay."
-is not someone I agree with and can just fuck off with their condescending tumblr bullshit.
