Yeah that secret was just...Carol is slightly older than some of the women on the show and she doesn't stand out as the most beautiful woman in the world but she's a) not old in the least and b) very attractive.

Re: are you afraid of dying?

[personal profile] cassandraoftroy 2013-04-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. The notion of ceasing to exist is profoundly unpleasant, and I hope to put it off for as long as humanly possible.

Re: Well, yes.

Not necessarily, depending on what we're talking about. All animals have self-preservation instincts (or are supposed to, anyway) which helps them not die prematurely. Fear of things like heights and spiders are the way our instincts tell us, "Hey, this could possibly kill you, so could you stay away from it, please?" Generally speaking, we are naturally afraid of dying - but more specifically, of being killed.

Fear of dying naturally of old age, though, seems to be a purely human thing. We can't really know how other animals feel about such things, but from what anecdotal evidence I've seen, I'm inclined to believe that most animals are very accepting of their time to go. I think the human fear of natural death comes about from our desire to know everything, and we don't know what happens to "us" in a conscious sense after we die, and for a lot of people, that's scary.

I'm sorry your friends were such dicks.
That said, this is ridiculous. Trying to live your life alone will fuck you up a thousand times worse than people leaving you ever will. Your one regret on your dying day will be not trying harder to get along with people. This playing the martyr thing won't do you any favors in the long run.

I hope you get the help you need and things get better anon. Please talk to someone about this. You deserve to get better.

Do you think prey animals generally have the level of sapience required to appreciate death as a concept to fear?

You're simplified analogy ignores both the way in which fear of death is uniquely human*, and that even if we change the meaning to apply it to other animals that my nature of that very intelligence we might react to it in an entirely different fashion.

*I guess you could make an argument for dolphins, whales etc

Or she could've gone to the King and Queen while Rapunzel was still a baby, leaving her out of it entirely, and said, "Here's the deal, that flower was keeping me alive and now it's gone because of you two. It's great that you're still alive, but, um, help me out here please?"

Not in so many words, but you get the picture.

She could have become a nanny, or a babysitter, or a courtesan, or quite a lot of things that would have given her access to Rapunzel like once a month at least (don't remember how often she had to do the singing thing - my headcanon suggests more frequently as her life was extended). But instead she chose kidnapping and emotional abuse.

Oh man... we're going to have to get together and compare notes.

...This is going to take a lot of explaining.

Re: are you afraid of dying?

I'm terrified of death in general, yeah. With my own death, I hate the idea of living for eternity, but at the same time, I do put far more thought and worry into the nature and timing of my death than is healthy - I'm most worried that I will die a violent death, for example. Other people's, too - I get very intensely emotional when thinking that people I care about are going to die, much to the point where I am convinced it is happening at that very moment or will happen very soon.

This isn't strangeness, it's an illness. Just one of the ways my anxiety manifests itself.

I agree that it doesn't have to be in the context of a romantic relationship -- I think we're seeing a bit of the same thing in the way Daryl interacts with Carl, and "Little Asskicker," but I'm also totally okay with a Daryl/Carol romance.

This conversation is entirely about social perception though, I am coming from experiences of how people react to certain terms, personal feelings on it don't matter this is just how people react to these terms. And OP was ranting about people's reactions, hence my comment.

So you can take your fat/health wank somewhere else.

Drove a fuel truck through Baghdad in March, 2003. Then spent the next year driving it back and forth between Kuwait and Mosul.

...did they not tell you that that's common when they were teaching you CPR? I mean, shit, that's one of the first things they told us when we were learning hot to properly do compressions.

Your story is a great example of why it should be something that people are told, so that they know what to expect and as such are not as scared when it happens.

Even with the best intentions, if she hadn't been so damn set on showing how badass she could be and more cautious then it probably wouldn't have been an issue. Not only did she almost kill a member of the group, she also wasted ammo doing it.

Exactly this. There was absolutely NO reason for her to be taking potshots at "zombies" all the way back near the treeline, when other members of the group were already moving in with melee weapons to avoid (a) the sound of gunshots, which draw more zombies, and (b) wasting ammunition needlessly. She just wanted to prove how badass she was, and nearly killed one of the most valuable members of the group in doing so.

i dunno. maybe things are different in the UK but i am extremely jaded about cops in the US re: hate crimes. ...and extremely jaded in general, so that probably doesn't help

Fucking this. She is *so* not unattractive, and i love how she's grown from being an abused victim to a strong, important part of the team as a whole.

*she and daryl so need to get it on*

She's gorgeous and she's only 3 years older than Norman Reedus. You've just been brainwashed by a TV culture that presents women in three categories: Teenagers played by twenty-somethings, their mothers who are played by thirty-somethings and then "old" people, played by forty-somethings plus.

I'm wondering about season 8. Is Moffat going to be doing that? Is Matt? Is Jenna-Louise? Or is she gonna be finished in the s7 finale? Is Eleven gonna regenerate whenever Moffat leaves, like Ten and RTD? No one seems to be thinking beyond the 50th Anniversary Special. I assume Moffat's doing the special, but I haven't heard word on when/whether any members of the cast and crew is slated to change.

That was a very, very bad day.

Yes, Carol is somewhat popular now (though nowhere near as popular as most of the male characters) but she was extremely disliked by the majority of fans for the first 2 seasons. People started liking her this season because the writers gave her character a total overhaul during the break. She's now good at killing zombies, quick with a smart-ass comment, bros with Daryl (more if you ship them) and one of the few characters who constantly makes sensible choices. I think it also helps that characters like Lori and Andrea and Michonne were around to take more of the hatred. Most people who don't like Carol at least don't hate her with the intensity often directed at the other women. (Though Maggie and Beth seem to be mostly tolerated. Maggie because she's awesome and Beth because she's just not around enough for most people to care.)

Also...how is she old or plain-looking? 47 isn't old, people. And as far as plain-looking...I think she's extremely attractive. She always stands out to me on-screen. Then again, I think all the female characters on this show are attractive.

DLC was okay when it wasn't so bloody common, to the point of where it seems like games are being released unfinished with content that should've been put onto the disk being held back to get more money. In theory, it's a nice idea. Pay a little extra for more content once the main story is finished. However right now it's just bleeding the consumer for extra cash.
