The secret about Tangled made me think of this. I'm not afraid of dying at all, and I never have been. Sometimes I get scared of certain people dying because I need them, and of course I get sad about death... but I'm not afraid at all.

I wonder if that's typical or not? I always assumed very few people were actually scared, and it was the ones who were terrified who were strange.

It doesn't bother me because I guess I'm not expecting anything afterwords? Nothing really that scary to me about nothing. I mean, I'd like to do a few things before that, but being forgotten isn't something I'm concerned about.

You might be wrong about people being scared about though, it's a pretty common fear! Ranks about the tenth most common one, if memory serves.

Kind of sort of. Getting old is scarier to me, especially if I lose my faculties or mobility. Dying at any age not so much, but I am concerned about no one giving a shit if I do (or not being missed/remembered).

I'm not afraid of death at all. I have a friend who is terrified, has all this angst about being forgotten that seems to come up whenever she's stressed out or feeling angsty, and it's just completely unintelligible to me.

It's kind of an important evolutionary feature.

nope. as a cool dude once told me (after telling a story about having a gun pointed in his face) "dying isn't what scares me, what scares me is not living right."

I am afraid of getting myself killed, yes, but dying of old age doesn't frighten me. Age-related diseases scare me. Losing my partner scares me. But myself dying peacefully of old age doesn't scare me. I'm not looking forward to it or anything, but I have little reason to be frightened of a biological inevitability.

Yes. I very deliberately avoid thinking about my own death as much as possible. If I do I end up queasy and anxious and break into a cold sweat. I've tried reading and learning more about death and it's customs and processes objectively to try to lessen the fear, but it hasn't worked to stop the absolute horror and helplessness I feel whenever I think about the fact that I'm inevitably going to die.

I don't want to die... So I would say yes? I am a lot more scared of getting severely injured than dying, so if I had to choose between those two I would probably prefer death? But in general, I don't want to die before I am 110 and done with everything I want to do in life.

I don't think I'm afraid of dying per se, but there's a ton of stuff I want to do first... and also I hope it isn't painful. I'm terrible at dealing with pain, and I really really don't want it to be the last thing I experience. :X

Yes. The notion of ceasing to exist is profoundly unpleasant, and I hope to put it off for as long as humanly possible.

I'm terrified of death in general, yeah. With my own death, I hate the idea of living for eternity, but at the same time, I do put far more thought and worry into the nature and timing of my death than is healthy - I'm most worried that I will die a violent death, for example. Other people's, too - I get very intensely emotional when thinking that people I care about are going to die, much to the point where I am convinced it is happening at that very moment or will happen very soon.

This isn't strangeness, it's an illness. Just one of the ways my anxiety manifests itself.

Well, I was afraid, for a time. But it came to a head when I was about 12, and I had a huge mortality crisis that was at times crippling, and now...I'm not afraid of it, I'd just like to hold off on experiencing it for a very long time.

I'm not at all scared of death or dying. I don't WANT to die, because I enjoy my life and don't want to leave behind friends and family, but I'm not afraid of it. The dozen-ish times I've been in life or death situations (tornado, car crash, violent attacks, etc.) I've always been pretty apathetic to the thought.

The thought of being seriously disabled in some way (dementia, blindess, deafness, being paralyzed) scares the shit out of me because it would interfere with my ability to do things I enjoy.

I go back and forth. Lately I've gone back to 'yes' - sometimes it's the pain, sometimes it's going too soon? I've also lost a lot of people at a young age (both mine and theirs at the time they died), and those are always the worst.

Depends.
I have never really been actively suicidal, but there were lots of times in my life that I would have been grateful for dying. I remember there was a shipwreck on the news, and I was cooly thinking how I wouldn't have gone on a lifeboat, and it would have been great, nobody would ever have to know I refused to go on it. Frankly, realizing I was thinking that scared me a lot.

Now? Depends on the day, sometimes I still feel like that. But most days I feel there is so much I want to do in my life that I haven't done yet, and get scared thinking in not being able to.

I'm scared of dying painfully. If I could just skip the process of dying then the part where you don't exist anymore and don't have to worry about the stuff that plagued your mind when you were alive actually sounds pretty comforting.

I'm terrified, even more because I don't think there's anything after death.

But even then, I have two suicide attempts under my belt.

I'm not so much afraid of dying as I am of being dead. Dying is temporary, but death, as far as we know, is forever.

I'm super conflicted about this.

I want it to happen like right now out of sheer morbid curiosity about what might happen, and I don't want it to happen ever. At the same time.

I just want some fucking answers, goddamn.
