I think drawing them as white would be pretty stupid, though.

The thing is, the lions in the Lion King aren't. If someone wants to draw Kimba as a white kid, I'm fine with it.

Eh, I've seen some really shitty white!TLK characters, and some really good ones. I think, like all fanart, there's good stuff and bad stuff, and in the end, it's just fanart, people need to realize it's not the end of the world.

TLK is actually "Kimba the WHITE Lion" stolen and remade by Disney.

I think I understand why drawing lions as white might be a problem, but man this person is over-reacting.

I hate SJWs and the memes they tend to make theirs, tumblr comic sans slideshows like that being one of them. But I think they're right in this case, especially if making the characters white when doing humanized versions is the norm in that fandom.

I mean, the first time I saw human Lion King fanart, I didn't have to put on any special SJ goggles to think it was weird that they were white. It just is.

And that's okay, that's your prerogative to think that it's weird, but that doesn't mean you have the right to tell the artists that omg they're racist! for drawing them that way, because you're not necessarily right.

(What I love most is when the art in question is by a Japanese person, with the typical "manga" looks that American's tend to assume are "white" when in Japan the same look is thought of as "Asian".)

i didnt realize there were enough white humanized lion king interpretations to warrant making a passive-aggressive slideshow. come to think of it, i didnt realize there were humanized lion king interpretations to begin with.

There are, and some of them are gorgeous.

All those slide show things annoy the shit out of me, but I will say this:

I only saw a human version of TLK for the first time last week, as african, and it was awesome. I admit when I saw these really generic pale-anime-dude versions a few days after I was pretty unimpressed.

Yes, because Disney has never made any animated movies with non-white people. Except for Lilo and Stitch, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, The Emperor's New Groove, Brother Bear, Pocahontas, The Jungle Book and Aladdin.

Yep. Just like all the characters in Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, Pocahontas, and The Emperor's New Groove were all white, too.

Not if it was the 90s and they were making a movie set in Africa.

I'm more shocked that apparently there is a Lion King fandom. It just isn't something I think of as having a fandom; everyone I know has seen and loved it, but not really in a fandom way.

These sites are huge. They've been around for YEARS. And I don;t men this in a derogatory way, but it's a huge furry fandom.

I wonder if those people are equally angry because only one or two voice actors in the Lion King were African.

It's just fanart. Calm yourselves.

Four that I know of were African American. Shenzi, Mufasa, Raffiki and Cub!Nala. There may have been more but my tired and sleepy brain can only think of them right now.

I do believe it makes more sense to draw native African's as black.

But I'm not gonna bother point it out to anybody on tumblr unless asked first.

Eh, I get it.

That said, The Lion King musical is not considered pretty canon. And this is a bit of an overreaction.

I bet it hasn't occurred to a lot of artists that the characters are African and might not be inherently white which is, if not racist, at least a bit fucked up.
