We're expecting it to be as good as it used to be. I don't think that's "expecting too much".

But seriously -- the main reason people bitch about it so much isn't that the last two seasons were bad (even though they were, in many people's opinion), but due to the fact that Moffat split season 6 in half and aired the halves months apart, delayed the season 7 premiere six months, and split that in half across several months with a rather game-changing Christmas special between the two halves. It's a perfect recipe for heightened wank.

Everyone who complains about people criticizing Doctor Who must not know about fans reviewing older Who episodes well before Moffat took the helm.

There's nothing wrong with liking a show and admitting it has flaws, geez.

Are you new to Who fandom?

The very first comment ever passed on it, way back in 1963, was "William Hartnell is a dreadful Doctor and should resign", followed swiftly by "Verity Lambert has ruined Who with her style".

Who fans always hate the show and bitch constantly, it is what they are best at.

Hey, I happen to think it's awesome, and I prefer Moffat's era (though I liked RTD a lot too). I'm totally in love with Clara, and I love the current series (though a couple of the early episodes dragged a bit). I'm filled with excitement for the anniversary!

Doctor Who wank started in 1964 when fans had a big whine about aliens being introduced into their kids' educational show and making it silly and unrealistic, and it never stopped. You're fighting a losing battle, son.

I'm afraid to go near the fandom now because of the Moffat vs RTD wank.

I love Doctor Who (well, New Who since I found Classic Who to be unbearably dry--well, from the few episodes I've seen of it, anyway), but I'm kind of disappointed with the direction it's going after Ten's arc.

Maybe it's just because I miss Ten and the gang a lot, but I'm not all that intrigued by what's going on in s5 (I'm almost finished with it). The characters haven't captivated me the way the previous season's characters did (even Martha and Jackie and Mickey, and I didn't even really like them), Eleven, while adorable, hasn't exactly captured my heart (not the way 9 & 10 did), and I'm just really freaking desperate to know if it's going to get better.

I really hope so because I adore Doctor Who to bits. The past four seasons have been beyond BRILLIANT, and I miss the feeling of starting an episode and not being able to stop because it's just that damn good.

The season 5 finale is either completely brilliant and wonderful or a horrible travesty depending on your opinion (a description that applies to 99% of everything that has ever happened on Doctor Who ever), but it'll almost certainly make you feel something other than "meh". And while a lot of people rag on season 6, it is a lot more emotionally intense than season 5.

Honestly, with this show, tastes are so eclectic that the only way to know if you'll like it is to watch them yourself. Recs are almost entirely pointless.

I had a hard time shifting from Ten to Eleven, but after S.6, I felt much, much better about Smith and I've come to really appreciate him. Stick with it :) Eleven has some very lovely moments worth watching.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Now that's opinion I haven't seen before. I can see loving Eleven the whole time, or disliking him the whole time, or liking him but being turned off by s6... but being wooed into liking Eleven by /series 6/?
I must admit, I can't really wrap my head around that.

I admit, the first episode of this new season didn't wow me at all. But last weeks episode I really enjoyed, if mostly for all the cheesy rubbery alien costumes. It all felt so 80's. And I do really like Clara.

Though with what I've heard they're planning for the 50th...yeah, there be some hatin' from me for that.

Doctor Who fandom has been complaining about Doctor Who since forever.

For the record though, I'm actually more excited about the show right now than I have been since like early series 5. I love Clara and I hope that my love for Clara reignites my fondness for the show.

When they complained it into oblivion in the 80s, or at least one mad fan did, they started complaining they had nothing to complain about (apart from Crime Traveler) and would the BBC bring it back so they could complain about it again. It was briefly brought back in 1996 and many fans were overjoyed and promptly sent hundreds of complaints to mark the occasion. But sadly it was cancelled again, and they had to complain about only having books to complain about (particularly the Dr Who book with all the sex and swearing, so much complaining the BBC told the book publisher to make up sci-fi swearwords instead of real ones, which the fans then complained about) until Rusty brought the tv series back to much acclaim and complaints.

It's why I stay out of fandom. I watched it on the recommendation of a friend (New Who) and I fell in love with it. I love it. I appreciate it. I think Moffat and Davies and whoever else have done a GREAT job. Then I wander into fandom and people are whining like no one's business. And half their complaints I can't even figure out anyway (I love the vague Moffat complaints that make no sense). :P

It is his misogyny in writing strong engaging women who give the male lead a run for his money despite him having 900 years experience of being an adventuring genius. Doesn't he realize how bad that makes women look being able to do that. Huh, doesn't it.

This is why I tend to stay out of the Doctor Who fandom. A lot of fans pick apart every little thing.

It's almost as if they've never heard the MST3K mantra before.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Or they just enjoy it? Some people do enjoy picking things apart, you know.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I stay out of the DW fandom too because I don't want to deal with it. I don't even let friends I know online who watch it also know that I watch.

That was an unnecessarily awkward sentence.

We snark out of love.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I find Clara to be terribly irritating and kind of dull.
And all of the "mommies are the most important thing in the world" story lines are really really tired and trite.

I love Eleven, but based on the episodes since the Christmas special, the show is seriously not as good this season.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Dang, I've been making secrets in my sleep again.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Some of us don't like the current Doctor/storylines/showrunner. And since they all suck and we're stuck with them making a mockery of a show we used to love, we're going to bitch about it until the show transforms into something we don't hate again. Deal with it or stay away from any and all mentions of Doctor Who on the internet.

For real. It's not just people being nitpicky over little plot points not making sense or whatever. If that were the case, I wouldn't have even gotten through the RTD era.
