I think at the end of the day religious people know they're human, otherkin don't. That, to me, is a pretty big distinction in delusions.

otoh, at the end of the day religious people think they're immortal. Just sayin'.

Which religion thinks the physical body is immortal? Is there a Highlander religion I don't know about?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't just referring to physical bodies, but if that's where you want to draw the line, then there's all the people who believe in the Rapture.

I really wish I'd thought that one up. I could use the cash.

You know, I remember people complaining about that when it was founded, like they thought it was a bunch of crooks swindling good-hearted, well-meaning religious people, but I always thought it was totally fine. As long as they're providing exactly the service that they're accepting payment for - caring for customers' pets in the event of rapture for the agreed-upon price - who cares if the rapture never happens? I'm not planning to need major surgery this year, but I'm glad my health insurance covers it; it's the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
No, I agree it's fine. It's not crooks or a scam or anything.

But it still makes my head spin.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I read that link and immediately thought, they buy clothes that it's easy to evaporate out of, right?

But I'm not clicking the link. I have a sister I can't stand to listen to anymore; I don't need to go look at more of it.

LOL where do people GET this stuff from?? I don't even understand!

STOP LISTENING TO CRAZIES ABOUT RELIGION!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Belief in the supernatural is not exclusive to outspoken fundamentalists.

The belief that one is immortal, that one can never die? That's not something I've ever heard any level-headed person say, religious or otherwise. Religious people may believe in a manner of reincarnation or existence after dying but that's NOT the same as immortality.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Look, my beef with you is this. You keep saying that there's a right way to do religion, but you haven't articulated what it is. Apparently, belief in an immortal soul is okay. Why does that belief become insanity if the immortal soul is wolf-shaped?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)

Well-put, thank you.

[personal profile] wldcatsprstr_14 2013-04-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
In my opinion, it's the species crossover. In my particular religion, I believe that the soul is the essence/form of a thing. It's what makes that thing what it is. I am a human. A human in the very real physical sense. Therefore, it makes sense that any immortal soul I may have is also human. My essence/form is human. If I were a werewolf, it would make sense that my immortal soul would also be a wolf. The essence/form of a wolf is a wolf soul (cuz I don't sign on to the belief that animals don't have them). But a human is not a wolf. A human is a human. Therefore, the jump from human physicality to wolf essence/form is not really something I'm willing to buy.

And this is all assuming that werewolves are real, which (as far as science has shown) they are not. And of course someone will say that I'm already not giving science much credit by believing in a god anyway and I just have to tell whoever that is that being religious doesn't mean I can't apply logic to my beliefs or argue from a scientific premise.

A tree is still a tree once it dies. Any essence it has is tree, even after it's made into tables or paper. It doesn't become a whale.

You can't argue with people who think their belief in an all-knowing, invisible, homophobic overlord is somehow sane.

"I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Cthullhu Fthagan!"

My belief in ever-lasting life is really no different that a science's 'conservation of matter' theory. I don't actually think I'm always gonna be me, just as I am now, for the rest of eternity.

From someone who's been an atheist since about forever, it's kind of hard to draw the crazy line. I mean, there are those who are obviously crazy and unrepresentative, but all of you believe in things that I believe to be fundamentally impossible and difficult to put a coherent structure to. It's kind of hard to pick out who's reasonable and who's out and out delusional. I'm not trying to be an asshole here, I just genuinely have no frame of reference for which Christians all the other Christians laugh at.

Also, the crazies are usually louder than everyone else.

If they addressed religions on their own terms they wouldn't be able to make hilarious jokes about how thousands of years of cultural background is the same as a unicorn, mainly.

Not all of them. I believe people die, and they're dead.

But I also believe God has the power to bring the dead back.
