They wouldn't be as annoying if they only appeared every so often instead of every year. I wish they'd take at least a year off for other villains, even if Moffat has to bring back some of the classic villains (much to his chagrin).

I agree. I wouldn't mind them so much if they only appeared once in a while per season. As it is, their frequency is what makes them so irritating.

A few years ago the apartment building I used to live in had this massive roach infestation. We kept on bringing in pest control/exterminators, but the roaches kept coming back (I eventually had to move because it was so gross).

The Daleks remind me a lot of those roaches.

The contract the BBC has with the Terry nation estate says they have to have an appearance every season (no matter how minor) otherwise the BBC lose the rights.

If only any of the appearances were minor....

I agree, using them less would be helpful. I still like the Daleks but how well they come off is entirely dependent on the episode.

For me it's the cybermen that are boring, they don't annoy me but I rarely love a cybermen episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they really did not have to appear in the Manhattan episode or Journey's End (WHAT WAS WRONG WITH JUST DAVROS), and Victory of the Daleks was just a glorified toy commercial for iDalek figures.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. How about we try some different old enemies for a change?

Personally, I'd like to see the Black Guardian come back. As the embodiment of chaos and entropy, the Time War ought to have bulked him up some, and he's still carrying one hell of a grudge.

Or the chronovores. They're both morally ambiguous and eat time, so they might be fun. The Fehndahleen, either, if the Time War broke the lesser time loop on Planet 5.

Or the Rani, if we wanted something a little more personal. Anyone trying to convince me the Rani got coopted into the Time War without managing a way to sneak back out of it will have a hard time.

If we're going to pick old enemies of the Doctor, there are options, is my point. He's made about a gazillion enemies over the years. We're not liable to run out of old grudges any time soon.

This. I am still really disappointed there is NO REBOOT RANI. COME ON NOW, SERIOUSLY.

In a way, they suffer from the same problem as the Borg on Star Trek (especially Voyager). They were supposed to be the most dangerous enemy OF ALL, EVER, but that got increasingly hard to believe as they kept showing up and kept being beaten, again and again.

I'm not all that fond of them either. They show up way too often for my taste.

The key to the Doctor's character is he knows that it wouldn't bring him peace of mind.

It's true that they're reused to much. And really, the Dalek's aren't the scariest villains on Doctor Who. I still love those salt and pepper shakers anyways tho.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously agree. There are so much more interesting monsters. The Judoon, for example. Or the weeping angels, which IMO were awesome. Or those aliens who brought the "Silence" in The Impossible Astronaut (omg, the idea of them alone was awesome).

The Daleks are so ridiculously boring. Though maybe I wouldn't feel that way if they didn't make an appearance every other episode.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Or the weeping angels, which IMO were awesome

I think the key word there is WERE. The weeping angels got ruined pretty quickly, and the sad thing was Moffat couldn't keep his own damn canon about them straight so they were different in every incarnation.

They should have stayed in Blink and not been used again.

They've gotten a lot less irritating since the Moffat era. It seems like RTD was utterly obsessed with them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda...but Moffat turned them into nonsensical creatures that hardly bore any resemblance to Daleks. IMO, Asylum of the Daleks would've been better as Asylum of the Cybermen.

+1

All but two of RTD's series finales were about the Daleks (and the remaining two were focused on the Master, so he was scarely original there). And it was always about these were the last Daleks in existence, the Doctor beats them, and then somehow another lot of "last Daleks in existence" pop up...

The only thing about Daleks I find really interesting is the way the Doctor turns on a dime into a frothing PTSD-triggered explosion of irrational flailing hatred the moment he sets eyes on them, which makes them scarier (to me) by implication than could ever be portrayed explicitly onscreen (although "Dalek" did a great job of dipping a toe into that pool.)

I also get a kick out of how just completely purely nutzoid capital-E Evil with a giant slab of ham and cheese on top they are. Which I guess some people could see as annoying but I personally just find really enjoyably entertaining in a memetic sci-fi villain way.

"the way the Doctor turns on a dime into a frothing PTSD-triggered explosion of irrational flailing hatred the moment he sets eyes on them,"

...and this is one of the things that hits MY berserk button with Nu!Who. He used to be SO SO CHILL when he was killing the salt and pepper pots, dude! Snarky and sneaky and just generally awesome.

Now? Not so much, no.

They annoy me too. There are so many better villains :P They're outdated now too and those voices.. egads... those voices...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the problems I have with New Who is that they reuse and reuse the same monsters and villains and seem hardly ever seem to try and think of new ones for each week. The angels were good at first, but now I think they're just meh because they've overused them.

This is a really interesting article about Classic vs. New and it brings up the monster problem and the space problem.

Tom Baker's Doctor had the opportunity to kill them for real before their race even really got started and was struck by a moment of moral conscious that stopped him. I often wonder if any of the post Time War Doctors would feel the same given how that turned out...

The thing with the Daleks is they're such an iconic part of Doctor Who that they'll always be brought back eventually. Every time they've "died" in the revived series it has been fairly obvious that won't be it. Yeah they're a bit overused but I've just learned to make my peace with that. I still think Mighty Morphin' Power Dalkes were way too silly though.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I like Daleks, but I do think they've been used too much. They're better if used more sparingly.
