It's not that it's AU fanfic, it's that it's really awful AU fanfic with really awful BDSM practices pretending to be good.

If there's one thing fanfic has taught me, it's that people like unrealistic porn and don't really mind bad writing.

Exactly. Personally, I think it actually makes it harder for fic-turned-original work to be taken seriously. She's almost single-handedly turned "mommy porn" (I hate that phrase) into a joke.

The thing that's wrong with it isn't that it's fanfiction, it's that a. it was put up as a fanfiction before and b. it's terrible fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And c. people act like it's the first ever book to have sex in it.

Also, d) it was Twilight fanfic, so the originating canon isn't exactly respected to start with.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, the fact that it's redressed Twilight fanfic is pretty lame. But I'm pretty sure the worst part is the awful writing, the way BDSM is wrote in an abusive manner and THIS IS TOTALLY A-OK!

...So long as that isn't how your fiction is panning out, I wish you luck with your fiction.

Actually, I thought people made fun of it because it's a TERRIBLE fanfic based off a TERRIBLE book.

The problem is, how much of its success if people reading it just to see how bad it is or make fun of it? How much of its fame is actually notoriety? I'd rather publish a book very few people have heard of than masses of people laugh at. (Then again, I'm not making writing my career so the food on my table doesn't depend on how many copies I sell, thank goodness.)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I really wouldn't mind her publishing paychecks about now....

The problem isn't that it's fanfiction. The problem is that it's beyond-godawful fanfiction.

Don't expect good reception if your stuff is equally shit.

Somebody always breaks through. 50 shades introduced a genre to people that didn't read that genre. That's what resonated with them, not the utter shit of the book.

But by now, they've looked for more if they wanted to stay. Standards will grow.

You can't just be like the first and expect to make it. You gotta have something to stand out.

But maybe you do. Good luck.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate on it for originally being fanfic. I hate on it for originally being bad fanfic. Not to mention that it's a painfully obvious carbon copy of its rather gross parent work, the editing is next to non-existent, it's disgustingly kink-shamey for a book ostensibly about a D/s relationship (of which the D/s aspect of it gets dissolved at the end because apparently Christian was just into domming because he was "broken" and Ana ~cured~ him of his desire to be kinky with her pure and magical healing vagina), and it promotes distressingly unhealthy and unsafe BDSM practices.

I don't necessarily hate that the book exists - crap exists everywhere, after all - I hate that this is what people are citing as how they got "into" BDSM. That's like saying, "I wanna try cliff-diving because I watched a video where all these kids dove off cliffs and DIED HORRIBLE BLOODY DEATHS BECAUSE THEY WERE DUMB." Argh. And then they end up doing really stupid shit that ends up in the news and there are comments about how this is "proof" that all BDSM is abusive and whatnot. Stop it stop it stop it.

/end rant

I hate that this is what people are citing as how they got "into" BDSM

This times one thousand. And let's not even get into the irritating "Oooh, I'm so edgy~ you got a problem?" attitude of some of these one book experts.

From the 50SoG Confessions Tumblr:
"I wish everyone would quit wincing every time Fifty Shades is mentioned. Yes, I believe everyone gets that the book explores things outside of our everyday-sexual-box… but could we please grow up? Stop trying to defend that you are some innocent prude. I bet you dream about Grey’s kinky fuckery all the time."

I... someone wanna tackle that? I simply cannot.

All I know of BDSM comes from fanfic (notably, some fics from someone who practised BDSM), and I never have and never will read 50 Shades, but I still cringe at the bits I've heard of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have an issue with it being fanfic. I'll defend fanfic as legit any day of the week (I recently had a friend recant her statement when I started pointing out great literature that was ultimately fanfic - the difference being it wasn't having to dance around copyright laws of the US).

I have an issue with it being badly written (and I'm not a fan of porn novels anyway - but if it was good, I would just ignore it and not be like "THIS IS UTTER CRAP!"

So take heart, anon, if your stuff is well written, go for it and don't be ashamed for one instant that it came from fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Frankly, if you can't write original stories without having to use pre-existing character (regardless of whether or not they're thrown into an AU setting), you don't have any business writing original stories. If you do, you're just a thief with no ideas of your own.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Shakespeare would be sorry to hear that.

hey there

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Um so are you saying any work that comes from fanfic makes the writer a theif or stories that are aus with the characters' names changed. If its' the latter I sort of. Kinda think those fics are questionable. Because really if you can change the characters' name and have them come off as a brand new character then your characterization is really REALLY off.

But if its the former...lol please. Fanfic can make a great springboard and there's nothing wrong. My characters originated as fandom OCs in a fic I wrote seven years ago. I just built a world around them and changed them to fit.

I'm kind of in the same boat, OP. And while the other commenters have a point about the numerous other reasons 50 Shades gets shit on, fanfic is definitely not widely respected outside fandom spaces, so for a former fic to get so popular in mainstream circles IRL is pretty inspiring even if the actual fic-turned-novel is awful.

I feel similarly about Cassie Claire.

I pride myself on only ever ripping on it for being shitty writing. People who think that its biggest fault is being fanfic are too wrong for words.
