Haaaaaaate

Am I the only one who seriously fucking hates The Onion? The Daily Show and Weekend Update are fine, because they're actually making fun of real news. The Onion just makes shit up and dresses it up like news. (And it's rarely funny.)

The Onion just makes shit up and dresses it up like news.

That's... exactly the point? It never pretends to be real news. http://literallyunbelievable.org/ Doesn't stop people from interpreting otherwise, but that's on them.

Yeah? And I'm saying that's a thing that I hate.

Well, I am glad you decided to take time out of your day to tell everyone you hate something. Thank you for your contribution.

Have a hearty "you're welcome," said with all the righteous sarcasm you've just lobbed at me.

I am happy to see you can pick up sarcasm. Though I was going for derision but close enough.

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's strange and incomprehensible though

why do you hate fake news

It seems fairly innocuous

I'll hazard a guess that they were taken in by an Onion article and were laughed at by their less gullible friends.

With how many people there are on earth and with internet access...my bet is no.

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
... what?

I mean, if you don't find it funny that's one thing, but I seriously don't understand how you're this angry about the concept of satirical fake news.

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...I don't hate them because they're a straight up parody of the types of news that happens - and they do it well enough that they've actually fooled media both in and outside of the US.

That said, their humor can be pretty hit or miss.

/two cents

I only read what I'm linked so obvs I'm reading the cream of the crop but I find them pretty funny (if sometimes even a little too-on-the-nose).

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, that's pretty typical of their 'serious' stuff, imo.

Though, if you've never read their horoscopes I highly recommend doing it.

person doesn't understand satire in internet shocker

Re: Haaaaaaate

Person doesn't enjoy satire, actually. The point of it is clear, but it's part of that whole "humor is subjective" thing.

"doesn't enjoy satire" is kind of an overly broad statement though because satire is used in many different ways

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't enjoy satire for the same reason I don't enjoy the breaking of the fourth wall in fandom: it's too meta for me. I want my entertainment to be entertaining, my news to be news, and in-depth analysis that I'm not interested in to be left to the sidelines. So, I generally avoid satire, unless it's very soft.

That better?

Thank you. I was going to make a similar comment, but ran into page-loading problems and then thought better of it. But yes, not liking this particularly brand of satire is nowhere near the same as "not understanding" it.

not finding it funny isn't the same as hating it, either

that's what baffles me

I find it hit or miss. And rarely actually go to the site to read the articles, mostly just amusement at titles I see linked about is as far as I get.

Having read all the comments, I'm gonna stick my neck out and say I agree with you.

I take the news pretty seriously, and part of why I like TDS so much is that it spends half of its time lambasting shitty newsreporting and the other half the time putting a humorous spin on real events -- oftentimes pointing out hipocrasies that aren't getting pointed out in any other mainstream ways.

The Onion just makes a mockery -- not of bad reporting, but of news in general.

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's mostly mocking either bad reporting, or it's mocking real life. I don't think it's ever mocking news - it's using fake news as a platform to make jokes about everyday life, about politics, about sports, about all the things news covers. But I don't think the news itself is usually the butt of the joke, except in a few cases.

See, my feeling is that when you take fake stories and treat as if they are real news, that's the very essence of mocking news, to me.

Re: Haaaaaaate

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think that it may depend on how you view it. One my favorite articles by The Onion [and one of the first I ever read] was a column 'written' by a bottle of whiskey that was obviously poking fun at some of the things people who get completely smashed do [drunk texting/calling, etc].

So, maybe I'm overly influenced by that one, but I've always viewed it poking fun at the news/some of the things people consider news ["New family's house groans at night; sounds like great grandfather" type of stuff] than out and out mocking it.

But that's just my take so eh.
