This is a bit silly to me because aren't there... bad writers that participate in BBs as well? Saying that it's terrible if not-so-great fanartists sign up for BBs even though plenty of not-so-great writers sign up is not exactly fair.

Fandom isn't a club and everyone should be equally welcome to participate. Plus, quality is subjective.

That being said I do think it's frustrating when artists sign up for a Big Bang and then spend very little time on their assignment/half-ass it. The writer just gave you a massive fic that they likely put blood, sweat, and tears into. The least you can do is commit yourself to producing artwork that is something you put plenty of work into (this isn't directed toward the art in the secret, btw).

Here's the thing about bad authors, though: most of them can't churn out longer fics. So, even if bad authors sign up, a lot of them pull out when they realize they aren't going to make the minimum word count.

There's no such measure for art. I wish there was, though--I wrote a sixty thousand word story once, and my art was a doodle, done on notebook paper. Needless to say, I was not pleased.

I have seen some truly terrible authors who have put out longer fics (it astounds me that anybody can go on for much longer than 10k words without so much as a peep from punctuation, let alone extending a fic long enough for a big bang!) but you're mostly right. Most bad authors won't be able to last long, while for art, it's hard to put a perimeter on quality and so forth. That's why quite a number of authors can end up with bad art for fics they put their heart into

There are plenty of bad authors who can really drive up word counts.

Disagree with that. Perhaps it depends on the fandom? I've found that there are a ton of really bad writers out there that can churn out thousands of words a day.

That really sucks on the art though, that being said. But I think that doodle on a notebook paper would fall under the 'don't half-ass things' thing I was talking about, as skill of artist aside, clearly not much work went into that. :\

If anything, I think if you do write that much, it probably sucks because you wouldn't have the time to go back and edit. I can write about 2000 words a day, but I make sure the next day I don't do anything but edit, so my total output for two days would be 1000 words. Writing well takes time. Quality, not quantity.

Exactly.

IME, the best way to grind out lots and lots of words is to not care about quality. And unless you're the reincarnation of Shakespeare, not caring is going to make the quality tank.

lol no

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha no.

I've never gotten art I was unsatisfied with. Could it have been better art? Sure. But I've never gotten anything where I felt like the artist just shat on a notebook.

I have seen somebody do a doodle on notebook paper for somebody else's big bang, and I felt like that was pretty shitty (find some unlined paper, jfc). But aside from that one, by far most of the art and most of the writing averages out to be about the same level, IMNSHO.
