Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it difficult to find artists for all the writers for BBs? Maybe the person knows they're bad but doesn't want a writer to feel left out.

You know, the picture you posted isn't photorealistic -- or even plain ol' regular realistic, but it's also a perfectly valid form of stylized art. Just because it's not to your standards, doesn't mean other people aren't happy with it.

As a fanartist myself... I don't know.
I half agree because sometimes you just see shit that makes you cringe and feel bad for the poor writers. I half don't, because doing art it's not easy, and people need years to learn. I mean, I've been drawing constantly for most of my life and still haven't reached a decent level, if you ask me.
I really don't know what to think, OP.

This is why the "no criticism" trend is so harmful. Sometimes people need to be told that they suck at something. Not mocking or ripping or bullying, but just pointing out the fact. I suck at drawing. It's not something to be ashamed of - I have other skills that I excel at, and those are the ones I share with the world.

Hey man, I've seen great art made in MSPaint. If you're gonna knock the specific artists, whatever, but don't knock the program!

(Though, I really really hate Windows 7's MSPaint and I wish I had the "classic" version back.)

Although I don't know what fandom the art it from, I don't think it's bad at all. For a certain style of simplistic art. And I'd be happy if it were done for one of my fics.

Art is a matter of taste, period. Regardless of whether this particular piece is to my taste or not, I can tell who the characters are, despite not being in the fandom. I think that says a lot.

From what I know of them, Big Bangs often struggle to find artists. So if this person hadn't offered their free time to draw for someone else's story, it might very well be that no one would've.

Finally, I think you could've posted this secret without using a specific person's art. It's just mean and uncalled for, IMHO.

It's a BB. It isn't a fucking art competition.

You can only get better by practicing. Some people just won't get better. Cutting them out of the fanart community because you want to hold silly sketches of Harry Potter characters in wub to a high creative standard is hilariously pretentious.

Recruit better artists for your BB. Allow more than one submission for each story. But for god's sake get the fuck over yourself. Your fanfic inspired someone to do a drawing. Even if it's shitty it still got that. You deserve no better. You can get better by paying for a fucking commission.

I don't care if bad artists participate, but I wish they'd stick to authors who write bad fic. Bad art can really taint a good fic, and bad fic can really drown out good art.

This will never happen, though, which is why--generally--I like reverse big bangs better.

Art is very subjective - when does a mess become fine art? I can't draw at all, not even stick figures, and that picture in the secret looks great to me.

Are you saying you expect there to be quality filters on Big Bangs? That only the select few who can write perfect fic and draw photo realistic art will be allowed to participate? Again, how will something like this be judged when we all have our own opinions as to what is good and what isn't?

Well alright OP, I see your point, but I think you went overboard with the whole 'never improving' thing. That's just rude tbh.

otoh, as a writer who likes participating in BBs, I never trash art I get, even if I think it's awful because the artist went out of their way to do it for me. But if it's bad, there is a part of me that wishes they never got back to me at all. It kind of spoils it for me. But I wouldn't say it was the artist's fault.

Anyway, I think it's pretty cute. Simplistic for sure, but it could be worse. And sorry, but I find it dickish that you used this persons art instead of just letting the secret stand for itself.

Since art is subjective you can't exactly set a 'standard' for submissions so...what can you do?

(Now I agree it sucks if the fanfic author doesn't like their art, but that's always going to be a possibility.)

From what I've seen most bigbangs have more authors than artists, which leads to the organisers and participants begging artists to participate, so I guess then a lot of mediocre artists who thought their art wasn't good enough think "if there's a shortage of artists, maybe I should sign up." And then you get bad art.

I agree with you, OP, but you KNOW this is the case in big bangs. That's why I don't participate in them even though I love the concept, because I know I'd be disappointed if I wrote a huge fic I spent months of my time on and then got a crappy Paint doodle that someone did in half an hour. Exchange, big bangs etc. are always a risk. If you don't want to take that risk, don't participate.

That picture isn't particularly amazing, but I think it's very cute, clean, and it actually looks kind of stylish.

If you want quality control run your own event, why not run your own event? Because otherwise, this just sounds a bit like sour grapes.
