Aaaand there goes the last fleeting desire to do a BB fanart this summer. *waves sadly*

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
please don't mind these silly, close-minded dicks

imagine if allie of hyperbole or randall of xkcd did?
'~~~zomg, that not art!'

ignore them

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Those two examples are comics. What makes them hilarious is not the artwork, per se, but the writing. Fanart submitted to a bigbang is completely different and not at all comparable to either Hyperbole or xkcd, you're trying to compare apples and oranges.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
yeah because their work is solely based on the quality of their drawings.

If someone did the same as the humor in Hyperbole or the reflection of xkcd and applied it to fic that'd be pretty creative. Their 'art' is not based solely on the visuals, and they most likely know that the crudeness/simplicity of their drawings served a purpose.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Have you seen Randall's actualfax art? Dude can draw. Even if he draws stick figures for XKCD.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
If you can't draw why would you offer?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
i'm going to do this now just to annoy, tbh

anyway, the problem is the definition of 'good art' here, which seems to be very conservative, almost 19th century academic art 'realism & effort'

"Effort" is too much to ask now?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to see if a person put actual effort into something or not. Some people slave away on a piece of art for hours and it will still look amateurish to some.

But generally speaking, I'm with you. One should always put effort into something if they expect the same from others. No one likes to get gift art - no mater how pretty - accompanied by the sentence: "Oh, I quickly puked that onto the paper between classes" ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. All stylized art has basis in 'realism' aka life. Not even the classical masters were realistic-they painted in a stylized way.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

lol, I love that "don't like shitty MS Paint scribbles" = "Art Renewal Center zombie" apparently.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-04-23 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's fun? And I like to make things for people and participate in fandom? And I've been trying to find the motivation to polish my skills back to where they were before I stopped drawing? Because fandom is not serious business? It's the karaoke night version of creativity.

But just because I know you're shitty for mocking people for having fun in an area they aren't the best at in a place that should be safe for amateurs doesn't mean I relish the idea of exposing myself to it.

People are very difficult to draw and it can be hard, very very hard, to find a style of realism that works for you. For what it's worth, I think your Voldemort/Giant Squid piece is worth five out of four stars.

Does that look anything like a big-eyed chameleon?

A big-eyed chameleon lying flat on the ground? Yes. ;)

we get it your special and perfect and don't realize it because your one flaw is your ego. Barf. You're a troll. you troll for compliments instead of mad. Still a Troll.

BBs aren't going to be banned or anything. There's always next time, and in the meantime you can continue practicing.

Or you could enter along with a friend who writes fic? I think some BBs allow you to come in pairs. That way you could both compromise to produce something, as opposed to just going, "yeah we'll do that sometime."

I'm just saying, throwing a pity-party is fun and all (hell, I've done it plenty of times), but pretty much every artist I know who was bad and eventually got good (or even went pro) has admitted that they knew they kinda sucked at the beginning yet still had the nuts to post their stuff. "misguidedly narcissistic", I've read some describe it. And I suppose it's because drawing something they loved was a reward onto itself.

So hey, OP doesn't like the drawing (and I'm not gonna pretend I like it either) but at least the artist had moxie. And at the end of the day, you're gonna need that more than the approval of everyone in the internet.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-04-23 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I post my stuff. Here. And twice on AO3! It's very misguided too. :P

IDK, thanks for the kind words and thoughts. Overall you're right but being too chickenshit to ask the internet to look at my art in a serious context is hardly my biggest problem. So I guess I'll stick to not posting my stuff until I feel good enough about it that it doesn't cause me anxiety.

Until then I shall continue to produce ridiculous, sub-par art to the bemusement of f!s commenters. Probably using Paint as well. And I shall have fun doing it. This is my solemn pledge to both you and the OP of this thread.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, good on you.

For what it's worth, I checked out your fanart, and I definitely think you're on the right track. My main suggestion would be to get used to using guide lines-- block out the body and face shapes before doing the details. It ain't a magic trick, it'll still look wonky until you get used to the proportions. There are a shit ton of tutorials on this kinda stuff, but you gotta find one that suits you best; I think a mistake people make is trying to take them all into account and it just ends up confusing. Or maybe that was just me.

Or try places like http://senshistock.deviantart.com/, where besides the stock they usually have tutorials in their favorites, and accept submissions of art based on their stock, so you may get feedback more easily. Good luck.
