Aaaaand... why would anyone in fandom need to know your race and/or sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Beeecause they're being dogpiled for being homophobic and racist because they're straight and white and don't want to ship a character of color with anyone?

In my experience, if you're getting attacked like that, they will automatically assume you're a straight, white (insert other ~privilege statuses~ here) person anyway. Whether you tell them or not. Whether you actually are or not.

Honestly, fuck them and their stupid knee-jerk reaction. They're dumb and they should feel dumb.

A lot of people I know didn't want to romance him because the power dynamics skeeved them out. Some said they felt like since they had such an influence on him moving on he needed more time to really know what he wanted and time to breathe instead of jumping into a new relationship. Others talked about taking advantage of a mourning man.

I haven't heard of people not doing it because he's black though. Is tumblr really pushing that?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Any time someone doesn't ship a character of color, Tumblr SJWs blame racism. It gives them an excuse to yell at you, and they will take any and every excuse they can find.

Honestly, don't you know that if you don't spend every single second of your life doing exactly what SJWs want, you're a shitty person? Check your privilege, yo.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as I like Steve (and he was one of the very, very few bright spots in that game for me, personally), I have to admit the thought of him having to go through losing yet another person he loves (Male Shepard, in this case) absolutely heartbreaking, so I can't bring myself to romance him either. Fictional he might be, I just can't do it. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The question is: why is their opinion about you so important to you? It's not like someone who calls you a racist online has any influence on your RL.

I was accused of being a man-hater maaaany times by guys irl just because I haven't had a relationship with a guy in years (I'm openly bi).
But guess what? I don't care if they think I hate men because I know it isn't true and those idiots luckily have no effect on my current relationship with a lovely female person. So they can screw themselves.

You need to develop this kind of attitude. It helps with the blood pressure, believe me.

Steve was boring.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-04-27 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Really boring. Which was weird, because the other same sex romances had something going on. Even Traynor.

I think I understand why: they may have wanted to make sure he was utterly unoffensive. But the result was pretty milquetoast.

There's nothing wrong with picking something that's actually fun.

Re: Steve was boring.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Funny, I found Steve awesome and refreshing. He's one of only romances who isn't either an awkward nerd, a borderline psychopath, or just gratingly smug. He's just...normal, and smart and funny. Which I guess might be boring to some people, but I love it, especially in a black male character, since they tend to be annoying caricatures wherever they tend to show up (heeey Jacob).

"I would not romance him" gets You racist hateful fuck!"
and
"I would romance him" gets You fetishizing hateful fuck!"

And in neither scenario do these people know you. They just judge you based on a five second window.

I'm so glad that SJW is now being recognized as a meme. At least that way when someone gets yelled at for making an innocent mistake, they'll be a little less likely to think "this person represents the entire cause". That's what really gets me about SJW's- how they turn people off to the actual root cause, which is supposed to be "let's just be nice and respectful of other human beings". 'Course SJW's aren't interested in actual change. They just like to bully people so they don't have to think about the fact that sitting on the computer and telling Suzy Q what an ableist fatphobic swear word she is will not ever do anything to advance their cause.

(Open question, though- do the yelling-and-name-calling-on-the-internet people realize that they have not and will not ever make a difference? What happens when you point this out to them? Do they just explode, or do they have something to say? I can't imagine; it almost seems like it'd be kinda cruel to point that out to them...)

The SJW backlash is more of an excuse for people like you to sink back into your asshole racist opinions and refuse to even examine your behavior because a couple out of a hundred are overzealous people who miss the point.

I cannot believe how much shit I have to read every day on this site about how terrible SJW are and on tumblr and everywhere when really it's the backlash (that started IMMEDIATELY after the term social justice appeared) that have been the loudest voices. But continue patting yourself on your backs and acting like you've been victimized.

Ugh, fandom. I LOVE Steve, but I find the idea of him as a romance interest for dude!Shep kinda skeevy. I've never played it - as I really only play fem!Shep - but from the friendship between fem!Shep and Steve...the idea of romancing him as dude!Shep seems really sudden and WEIRD considering he is still mourning his dead *husband*.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK this secret makes me side-eye you more than not wanting to romance Cortez (and your whining about poor me, I'm white). I didn't want to romance him, because I felt weird inserting myself into his grief and m!Shep's voice is not as good as fem!Shep.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
They're not whining about "poor me, I'm white." They're whining about being considered racist simply because they don't want to romance a fictional black guy.

But, I dunno, maybe you think that's correct? Maybe you think that everyone should want to romance all black people because if you aren't attracted to/interested in a black person, then you're racist?

The thing that I find really fun about these sorts of people is that they're actually incredibly racist themselves.

If you think that a person should be liked simply because of his or her race, and that all of his or her other attributes should be ignored, then you are racist. But the sort of people who dog on you don't see that.

They are very sad, very stupid individuals.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Those people can shove it. If you don't want to romance him because he's finally moving on from his husband and you don't want him to go through that a second time by romancing him, that's up to you and they can mind their own damn business.

That's exactly why I don't want to romance him myself. I love Steve and I love helping him get through the grieving process as either Shep. And I think that's why I appreciate their friendship much more than the romance...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm convinced these people don't actually exist, or you're misrepresenting how it went down.

To be fair, Steve's kind of hits the triple threat button compared to the other romances. Not only is he gay, but he's male, and black, and to top it off, not an amusing stereotype of any sort. The other romances don't have that combination that, to quote a Cracked article, is most likely to auto-trigger Fuckhead Mode in people. While of course it's idiotic to assume everyone who doesn't want to romance him feels that way for prejudiced reasons, those who do it for innocent reasons are unfortunately still in the company of a lot of bigots, and telling one from the other on sight isn't easy.

That said, I don't think anyone, even the bigots, should be attacked for not wanting to romance him, for any reason. It's an individual playthrough. So long as no one's bashing his character with bigoted language or getting butthurt over a gay black guy's audacity to exist in video games, to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
...where are people getting this idea that Steve's specifically a black man? He's Hispanic, I thought? I mean, I know there are black Hispanics (mainly Islanders) but his eyes are just way too blue. Either he's mixed, Brazilian, or wearing contact lenses

or it's the 24th century and science lets people do whatever the fuck they want, I unno

To the romance thing: I intentionally made my maleShep be gay so that I could get it on with some sweet Kaidan action, but I was slightly tempted by Cortez. The idea of romancing a person that had JUST gotten over a very traumatic experience with a committed relationship made me go NOPE NOPE NOPE though. Poor Cortez. Let's just be friends, buddy.

To the race thing: I...always thought Cortez was Hispanic. I mean, I see his VA isn't, and he doesn't have an accent of any kind, really...he just always seemed like a darker-skinned Hispanic to me. But now I see everyone says he black...does this mean I'm a racist now? :(
