How do you deal with anxiety or panic?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
My method is to ignore everything, which was working quite fine for awhile but now I'm in this limbo where to move on in my life I actually need to deal with a few things that cause me huge amounts of anxiety. So I'm having to figure out how to actually deal instead of ignore. :(

What are your methods for dealing with things that cause great anxiety or cause anxiety/panic attacks?

I almost always ignore.

If ignoring doesn't work, I try come up with a plan. I break it into steps. Reward myself for beating a step and move to the next step.

For actual attacks I have to use a method whose name I've long forgotten, but basically I touch things and focus on the texture and sensation. I learned it as part of my cognitive therapy for borderline personality disorder.

To deal with issues that cause me anxiety, I usually turn to other people for help figuring out how to accomplish whatever it is that caused the anxiety. I only get anxious over things that overwhelm me and it's rare that I can ignore those things. This week I have to get my car registered in my new state and I only have until Friday because my anxiety kept me from doing it sooner. I only found out what exactly I have to do this last Friday but now that I know what I have to do, it isn't anywhere near as big a deal for me.

It's still entirely possible I'll have an anxiety attack when I go to the vehicle registration place, though. If anyone sees a woman in her late 30s touching the bricks of the vehicle registration place in Dallas on Monday, you'll know why.

DA

For actual attacks I have to use a method whose name I've long forgotten, but basically I touch things and focus on the texture and sensation.

This actually helps me a lot when I'm feeling the onset of an anxiety attack. Simple, repetitive motions too, like stroking a worry stone or taking something in my left and shaking it around.

I kn ow that sounds kind of weird, but it really helps me focus on something and can help me ground myself.

For the longest time I kept half full water bottles in the car because shaking them helped when I started to have panic attacks on the freeway.

I learned that same technique. I call it tactile grounding but I'm pretty sure that isn't what my therapist at the time called it.

Poorly. :(

Medication has helped me before, but that's not an option right now.

Distracting myself. Getting support from my husband. If it's something concrete that I can do something about that's causing me anxiety, then fixing it (like cleaning the house instead of freaking out about a dirty house or not even letting it get to that point). Removing the source of anxiety if possible.

My anxiety attacks usually come when I'm trying to fall asleep, usually centered on not being able to fall asleep, and I handle them very poorly. I've been able to cut them off lately because I've known clearly that there was zero reason to feel anxious (being at home, in my own bed, with nothing anxiety-inducing the next day) so when I've felt the first twinge I've just told myself, "Nope. No reason, so not gonna do it." Which doesn't work so well if there's not so obviously no reason.

Ignore/avoid everything. I completely block out everything and anything that will make me feel anxious. Which is probably the absolute worst way to deal with this because issues tend to still be there when you're forced back into reality. More often than not they exacerbate.

But yeah, I pretty much ignore everything and distract myself with anything-- tv series, books, fanfiction, video games, internet browsing, drawing, writing, etc.

It sucks so bad. I hate that I'm the type of person who just can't tackle things head on. I hate that I have such a strong compulsion to hide from, ignore, and avoid my problems.

I'm currently doing just that with school. I'm sure people probably think I'm just playing games, but I'm really not. I just can't get myself to face my problems. Last week I spent an hour staring at the door, willing myself to leave, and then panicking whenever I made a move to do so. I ended up not being able to leave my house after all and missed a week of school.

If I don't die from a fucking anxiety attack, then my own shame and humiliation will eventually do me in, I'm sure.

I deal with big-ass anxiety by getting help for it. Then taking it a minute, and hour, a day, a week, or however long I need to muster the courage to face it, at a time. That's all I could do really.

I take meds too, because apparently, I do very well on it if I'm with a good psychiatrist who knows my needs. It takes a little patience and lots of talking, but I'm getting by until I have to face the harder challenges in my life.

By reminding myself how the anxiety/panic is always worse than the actual thing I'm dreading, and how every time I feel silly afterwards for worrying over nothing.

It's been an on-going struggle, but, generally, trying to logic myself out and/or ignore it as much as I can if it gets too overwhelming for logic seems to be working, slowly (I'm talking years, here!), but your results might differ from mine.
