I don't read WiPs. If you ever finished a story that I enjoyed I would comment and say so, but yeah not going there unless it's done.

I try not to read WiPs either.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. That used to be a steadfast rule of mine, although I've broken it for a couple of amazing fics. But yeah, for the most part, if it's not done, I'll wait until it is.

This.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. And frankly, holding your story hostage is ridiculous. You should write for yourself and nobody else and be glad if anybody reads your story, not demanding that people must or you'll throw a hissy fit and refuse to finish it.

...Okay.

FUCK THAT FUCKING BULLSHIT "WRITE FOR YOURSELF" LINE. There is NOTHING WRONG with wanting, or even needing some feedback for something you put time and effort into. Do you know what "writing for yourself and nobody else" is? Masturbation. It can be fun, it can be enjoyable, and for some people it's all they need, but some of us are content with diddling our own brains. I've written "for myself and nobody else." It was all either crap or something I totally lost interest in. I cannot write a complete story from beginning to end without getting some kind of feedback.

Every single time a writer (and it's only writers who get this, no one scolds artists for wanting feedback) wishes that they could get more reviews/kudos/hits/any other kind of feedback, someone always gives that patronizing, obnoxious "you should write for yourself and nobody else!" line. You know what? I don't write for myself, and I don't want to write for myself. I write for other people, and to do that I need to know that other people are paying attention.

I don't need everyone to review. I certainly don't need everyone to like it, but I need to know that someone at least read it.

Well you're a competitive needy little bebop, aren't you?

If your definition of "competitive needy little bebop*" is "someone who does things for other people and would like other people to notice that I did them" then, yes. Yes I am.

*WTF does "bebop" even mean in this random word salad of an insult, anyways? Are you calling me a composition of early modern jazz music? Or maybe you think I'm that henchman from the '80s Ninja Turtles cartoon?

I actually read that as bishop at first and wondered how the computer knew I was playing chess with...somebody from Brazil, apparently.

-shifty eyes- They're spying on me!

This.

In my experience (and of course YMMV), the people who most often say "Write for yourself" are writers who regularly receive abundant and enthusiastic feedback themselves.

I'm with you. I'm an artist not a writer but the few times I mention I'd like a bit more exposure everyone always jumps down on me saying "Draw for yourself!" I draw for myself, but art is the only way I'm able to participate in fandom nowadays and when people don't even comment on it (yet I have a hundred of favs) it's just discouraging. I want to be a part of fandom!

I'm not a writer, never have been never will.

I am a blogger though, and I wouldn't post my blog entries so everyone (or my friends list at times) can read them, if I didn't want them read, then I would write privately.

I don't get the write for yourself line, I assume when someone posts something on the internet where everyone can read it, they aren't just doing it for themselves. They are writing their story to give other people a story, if they wrote for themselves then they wouldn't post it.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
But the OP wasn't demanding anything, or did you miss that in your rush to share your little slice of entitlement with us?

Not continuing to write when there's no feedback whatsoever isn't holding a story hostage, it's what artists do when they think nobody gives a shit. It's not wrong to want feedback. It's not wrong to think that well, if nobody likes this, maybe I should put my time to better use creating something that people WILL like. That's just what happens when reasonable people try to make something they hope others will enjoy.

If you like a story, review it. Doesn't matter if you don't know what to say, are worried that your comment is dumb or trite, etc. Think of something. It doesn't have to be a work of art, just say that you liked it and you're looking forward to seeing more because if you don't encourage the artists who create work that you love, there's an excellent chance you're cutting off your own supply of art to enjoy. Why do that to yourself?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay then. But if I'm writing a story only for myself, why should I post it anywhere? I mean, if no one's reading it, I can very well keep it on my hard drive, share with a friend or two, work on it in my own time, or not at all, whichever I prefer.

Since I'm writing it for my own enjoyment and nobody else's, I can just not show it to you at all.

It's such bullshit, telling people to write only for themselves and not expect other people to let them know if they're reading it or not. It's not like authors' demand God knows what kind of payment - we just want to know if we're making your day or not. If we didn't need that, we wouldn't need readers' approval, ergo there would be no reason to post anything AND THEN THE FANDOM WOULD DIE A PAINFUL DEATH.

So just like authors should respect their readers, readers should respect authors as well and not just wait for fun stuff to magically appear without doing anything nice in return, I think.

This! Especially the last sentence. Coudln't agree more.
