Books/Movies/Tv Shows You Love Whose Fandom You Can't Get Into

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-05-04 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
^ Just what is says.

For me it would be Harry Potter. I love the movies and after I watch one I always get the urge to read some fanfiction. But as soon as I start I am just like ugh. I don't know if I am overwhelmed by the amount of fanfiction or because I have no clear favorite character/pairing but I just can't get into it.

The same goes for Doctor Who. Love the TV show, cannot get into the fandom to save my life.

Is that a video game or a anime?

Harry Potter (books and movies), LotR (movies only), Star Trek (ALL of it), Sherlock, The Avengers and pretty much all of MCU, and Discworld.

Man...those are most of the BIG fandoms. D:

I can't get into Avengers fandom either. I think it's because I almost only read romance fics and my MCU OTP (Tony/Pepper) is already canon.

Les Misérables. Read the books, enjoyed them just fine, but I can't stand the fanplosion over that damned musical movie ARGH.

Anything Pullman. I haven't even checked if there's a Sally Lockhart fandom - I'm just so not interested. I don't see any appeal in writing or reading Pullman fanfiction.

Then there's Poirot, because, as much as I respect the right of other fans to enjoy whatever they want to enjoy, I find the Poirot/Hastings pairing completely ridiculous. Not only am I not invested, I also cannot take fanfic seriously. It cracks me up.

Shakespeare. LOL, merci but non merci.

Hitchhiker's Guide - all the fanworks bore me to tears.

LOTR - I hate the fact that nobody likes Gandalf enough to use him as one of the main characters. I'd like to see him having feelings and personality, not being a deus ex machina for everyone around.

Does Shakespeare have a big fandom?

I can't speak for anyone else (and I've never tried writing LotR fanfiction, so it could be argued I shouldn't even speak for myself), but the lack of Gandalf may not be entirely due to dislike. Of all the Fellowship, he's probably the least accessible- I can't get into his head anywhere as easily as, say, Sam or Boromir.

All movies. That's because the fandoms usually start churning out different AUs in no time and ignore the canon (which is not that surprising, since after all, there's just one story in canon).

Sherlock. People warned me to stay away from the drama, so I ended up avoiding the fandom completely.

Most of Star Trek. I followed the DS9 fandom for a while, but the rest...eh. I just have no interest in shipping any of the pairings, and the canon (shows, comics, movies) is quite enough for me.

The vast majority of everything I watch and read? My involvement in fandom tends to be very general and non-fandom-specific - like being on FS - because I have a hard time getting "into" fandoms.

doctor who. i don't follow it now really, but back when i was obsessed i just stayed away from fandom. the long history + rabid insane fans + seemingly constant fanwars = nah son.

Shaman fucking King. The fandom's....really uncreative. Or at the very least, they like to complaint a lot while completely ignoring canon personalities.

I'm with you on Doctor Who.

I'd love to read some great gen fic for it, but whenever I try, I just get waysided. I would love to read some fix-it fic or an amazing Doctor/Donna gen travel fic, yet for some reason I haven't.

LotR and aSoIaF books and movies both

LotR just because it's one of those things I don't want to see a whole lot of innovation on. The fact that there are people who do is definitely fine by me, and I do like a lot of non-shippy fanart. There's even some fic I've really loved that were pretty far away from canon.

But it's just one of those things.

aSoIaF's fandom just doesn't interest me, mostly because I'm satisfied with what's there but also because of what I've seen of it has been wholly unpleasant.

But also because I just can't get into live action fandoms. The minute characters end up visually defined by real, live people the fanworks end up being completely unappealing to me. Too close to RPF, but especially for fic.

Supernatural, because I wasn't interested and then realized it was full of nuts. Avengers, because I dislike all the Steve/Tony fic. Teen Wolf, because I dislike all the Sterek fic. In fact, I've always had trouble with poking around live-action fandoms, going all the way back to Xena, Buffy, Stargate, etc., with the major exception of Inception. Whereas I can dive headfirst into any cartoon, game, or comic fandom and find all kinds of things to love. Never understood that.

I can't get into the Homestuck fandom. Sure, I've reblogged cute or awesome art and read a few cute or okay fics, but I haven't loved anything like I have with the HP or Star Trek (or even the MCU Avengers) fandoms.

I'm also not very interested in the fic for Sherlock.

Game of Thrones. I have lots of friends from other fandoms who love it and I love discussing it with them, but I'm not keen on seeking out the actual GoT fandom.

Same with Avengers. I'm less into it than GoT, but I still love it. Fuck the fandom though. Keep me far away.

Castle. Why so Casketty, fandom?! Seriously, I've never seen a show where the main, much beloved ship is the hetero canon one. Also Teen Wolf, because: Stupid.

FMA.

I loved the show, I just didn't care about the shipping, and that's almost all there was in the fandom (like most fandoms).

Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Most if not all book related fandoms. Yikes.

Doctor Who for me too. Not a matter of "can't" though, more "won't." I've seen enough pointless bitching on here to know that it's not worth wading in.

I'm this way about 30 Rock. I'll read an occasional Jack/Liz, and some of it is really good, but let's face it: it's not written or starred by Tina Fey. I also feel this way for The Office too.
