Filter for complete stories, log out, and leave kudos only on finished works?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You can also make a sock to leave kudos for locked fics.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I could have written this secret myself! At least now I know I'm not the only social anxiety kudos weirdo out there.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
OP? Are you seriously that much of a mentally delicate snowflake? It's the Internet, for God's sake. Use a tor anonymizer if you're that worried about someone backtracing your Kudos to your IP address.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You obviously have less than zero understanding of how anxiety works.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OP's anxiety about this is hardly special snowflake territory.

I have left kudos on a WiP that went to hell and then wished I could suck those kudos back. Chaptered kudos would be handy.

Can't recall many wips I ever kudos'd, but same. Let me unlike that thing! On the other hand, I kind of like having a trail of shame I can't take back.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with the wanting to take Kudos back on a fic, holy crap.

Sometimes you read what you think is going to be a really good WIP story and then they pull the rug out from under you, throw in a pairing that you didn't even know was going to be a thing and now you're lamenting that your name is on a fic that just totally went downhill.

'Don't Kudos until the story is done' is my rule from now on.

While I understand the appeal, admittedly... I don't think that I'm the only one whom it would make feel very insecure as a writer.

The last one sounds more like it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I know right?! There have been stories I rec to everyone and then, bam, one, two, three chapters more, and it went to shit. Like, so embarrasingly awful I cringe when it updates. I want to take those recs back.

agree 100%

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
This just happened to me: a fic summary seems good and includes my preferred pairing, so I start reading it and more than a dozen chapters in, they throw in a new pairing, completely out of left field (needless to say completely OOC from canon), in the form of a threesome. Which I is something I happen to dislike and therefore avoid?! Then and only then does the author add this new relationship to the tags - which take up half a screenful, by the way...

The entitled 'Oh, if you are too narrow-minded to enjoy this story now that it's a threesome, it will start getting explicit in the next chapter, so you should just go away and return in about ten chapters by which time we'll get back to the original pairing' note from the author did not help my irritation any.

I did stop reading the story, thanks for the late warning, but I resent not being able to take off the kudo I had left a few chapters in. On the plus side, I now know to avoid this writer. Thanks for the time I will save in the future, which I can spend on reading more honest and better writers!

Seriously, I get that authors do not want their readers to wander off when they write unpopular pairings, but have some guts and just announce these pairings, there's nothing wrong with writing unpopular pairings: but don't just spring them on unsuspecting readers, hoping to recruit them to your preferred pairing without warning.

If you don't want to ruin the surprise, just announce straight off that you will not warn for pairings/ratings/triggers.

But if you write a story and don't even know the pairings from one chapter to the next, your chapters are too small. Or maybe a little bit more forethought should go into your immortal masterpiece.

Note: as a result, I've completely stopped leaving kudos or comments on WIPs and I am seriously considering reading only completed fics: so the next time a writer whines about not getting enough love for their multi-chaptered fics, they'll know who to blame - the writers who play that kind of trick on fandom at large.

/glad I got this off my chest. I know, first world problems! :D

1) Only leave kudos on completed stories.

2) Leave kudos anonymously.

It shouldn't be that hard, considering the first only requires waiting and you've left kudos anonymously before. And who cares if they just boost the count?

I've left kudos on things I ended up not enjoying at the end or just stopped reading because I didn't like the direction the fic took. I've never wanted to take back kudos because I enjoyed the fic enough to keep coming back for a while, and I think that at least deserves a measly kudo.

I don't have social anxiety with comments/kudos, but I also wish I could take back kudos!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope no one ever leaves kudos on any of your stories.

No, I'm not bashing your social anxiety. I find the fact that you used to have no problem leaving kudos when they were anonymous before but now OH NO YOU WILL JUST BOOST A KUDOS COUNT WE CAN'T HAVE THAT has to be in my top ten most asinine, entitled, stupid, and ungrateful thing I've heard in a long time.

Log off before leaving kudos?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get anxiety. I panic whenever I walk up to a closed door and cannot immediately see which way it opens. What if I think it's push when it's pull? What if I walk right into the door? What if I take too long to open a fucking door? That would be so embarrassing. People will laugh at me.

The thing is, anxiety is awfully narcissistic. Nobody watches you this closely. Nobody cares how I open a door, and nobody gives a fuck if your screen name endorses a fic that might turn out to be not so good after all. And you know this.

It's harsh but in the end, that's what social anxiety boils down to: you aren't that important. People don't care about your inconsequential errors of judgement. Frequent avoidance makes it worse; I suggest you go and leave kudos on a genuinely shitty fic right now so you learn to get over yourself.

So just log out to leave kudos on fics that aren't member locked.

I have the same anxiety problem as you, and I just log out to leave kudos, and even comments most of the time. It's a little annoying to have to keep logging in and out, but an easy fix to the anxiety issue.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
The sky will surely fall, à la Obelix and Asterix, if we leave kudos in the wrong places. Won't it, dear?
